Acid reflux/heart burn
@@Big Opie, Hi there! I was one of those people with horrible reflux prior to my RNY in September. I have not had a single episode of heartburn, reflux or gerd since my surgery. I take no medications for reflux at all. RNY cured me of that disease! Best thing I ever did for myself.

My fabulous Bariatric Team!
Hi all! As some of you know, I had a 3 level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion with Corpectomy on Wednesday morning. That is a pretty big surgery and I did extremely well given how nervous I was. Well here is the thing, after you have had RNY things are confusing because as you probably know, most hospitals focus on the one thing you are in there for. My hospital was terrific but we're not set up to ensure a proper bariatric diet for me given They went through my throat. So, as you can imagine my throat has been put through the ringer and I found even sipping Water was excruciating. I was unable to take any of my supplements nor was I able to eat anything for a few days. I was living on pudding, and trying to swallow cottage cheese. When I asked if the hospital could provide some nice icy cold Protein shakes that did not go so well either. So, I was released yesterday and immediately called my bariatric team to see what I should do about supplements and getting my protein in. Also, I literally cannot take a bite of pudding without drinking something to flush it down. And drinking anything painful. When my team found out I was released yesterday they asked if I could stop in immediately. I did and they were so amazing! They gave me a ton of samples of Proteins and supplements that could work for me. They had me see the doctor and bariatric nurse without any notice. They even mixed me up a delicious Protein shake on the spot and had me drink it right away. Although I am taking things slowly I am starting to get protein back into my system which of course is vital to healing. That team is absolutely incredible and I feel so blessed to have a medical team that really cares. I am talking about the Park Nicollet Center of Excellence in Minnesota. I just wanted to share my experience because it really went above and beyond! I feel so lucky! Thanks for listening!

RNY - June 19th! Excited and scared all wrapped into one!
Good luck to all of you guys! That pre op diet will set you up for success and although it is hard, it is so worth it in the end. After a couple of days you won't even be able to finish all the Protein shakes you are allowed to have. I hope you all have a safe and speedy recovery!

Frustrated, confused and scared
Ugh! I absolutely hate hearing that people in the medical profession behave this way! Of anyone they should be educated on this disease. I am so sorry that you are already having issues like this especially from egotistical people like the physicians you work with. To your point, they have probably never suffered with obesity and the diseases that come with it. There is no easy way out and of all the ways to lose weight this is actually the hardest! There is no going back and it forces you to change. More importantly if you do what you are supposed to, the weight will stay off. God bless you for taking care of others, now it is time for you! I cannot imagine what it is like to work on my feet all day taking care of other people when I hurt so bad at my heaviest. Don't let these horses behinds effect you negatively. They are honestly not worth your time and effort. Good luck to you and please feel free to reach out if you have questions or just want to talk.

Had my surgery last night
@@melisa6115, Walk as much as you possibly can, it will help get rid of the gas in your belly. When you are not walking use a heating pad and chew on some gas x. If you lay in the bed constantly it will take a lot longer to get rid of the gas pain. Also the first night is the worst, it will get better, I promise!

Am I starving?
Sreeves is exactly right. You have to focus on getting your liquids in first and then Protein this early on. You are still swollen in there and it makes it really difficult to take much in. That means in order to stay hydrated you need to have that Water bottle in hand and slowly sip. Of course when you do have a Protein shake, follow the 30/30 rule. If you are having a hard time with Protein shakes then you need to use a protein supplement in your water. I promise you will NOT stretch your pouch by drinking fluids, just take it slow and sip constantly. Good luck to you!

They will be able to help you get that stress eating under control so you can continue to feel great! The good news is you recognize the warning signs now. Good luck to you!

Sporadic Brown Urine ?
No, not currently. I did have that problem when I was suffering from kidney disease. I would definitely get it checked out right away.

Last Minute Change- NERVOUS!
The exact same thing happened to me and I am so very glad that I had RNY. I have not had a single episode of reflux or heartburn since my surgery and we discontinued all reflux medications 30 days post surgery. Woot woot! You will be so happy when that problem is gone! Good luck!

Yeast Infection......Maybe?
It could be ketosis. There is no mistaking a yeast infection because of the nasty white discharge, smell and itching. It is definitely possible as antibiotics can cause them and they certainly give you enough of those in the hospital.

Worries at two weeks
@, Hi there. Don't worry so much about your sugar. What you are seeing us excellent news! Get used to it because it actually becomes the norm. I was type 2 diabetic as well and all my melds were stopped in the hospital for diabetes, I now check my blood sugar daily because yes, they still want you to do that. My resting blood sugar averages around 77! My A1C has dropped to 5.0 and has remained there for more than 6 months now. I am 8 months post op. Good luck to you and enjoy this time, there will be so many good physical changes happening for you every day!

Pain and dizziness 1 week out
Hi Dee! I do remember, very feeling very weak and tired at the end of that first week. I had been on a clear liquid diet all week and I just was not getting enough liquids even though I thought I was. It turned completely around for me as soon as I was able to move to full liquids and could start drinking Protein shakes. If you continue to feel badly.give your surgeons office a call. Maybe they will allow you to start adding to your diet. Good luck!

My first appointment
@, congratulations on taking the first big step, educating yourself! The emotions are just part of the process and you have to be ready to take this plunge so you can be most successful. Most of us have lost 100s of pounds on our own over and over again. The real issue happens to be keeping it off long term. I can only speak for myself but once you get older the ease of losing that weight stops and pretty soon it seems to only go in the wrong direction. I had to be ready to move forward but personally I waited way too long. I had sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, severe reflux, high cholesterol, stage 3 kidney disease and degenerative disc disease. If I had to do this over again, I would have done this 15 years ago. Had I done that I would not be headed to a hospital in Minneapolis today to have a very big spine surgery. The good news, I am down 103lbs, I am no longer obese and well on my way to goal. My diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stage 3 kidney disease and reflux are all gone! I feel fantastic and can do things I never thought I would be able to do. Even with a severe spine problem. Take the time to get your head straight and decide if you are ready. If you are, wait no longer, it is only going to get harder and keep you from living a truly normal life. God bless you!

Interventioned
Sometimes I wish I had daughters instead of sons! They know just what to say to help you get it in gear. Boys are always afraid to even go there. I have to practically pry it out of them. Enjoy those young ladies, they clearly love you and have your best interests at heart. You have done remarkably! Keep up the good work and I bet if you make some additional changes you will be exactly where you want to be.

Pre-op diet day 1...
You made it through the toughest day of this whole thing. I promise as the days go by it gets much easier. I think after day 3 I just did not even care anymore. The important thing is to leverage a good quality chicken both to offset all the sweet from the Protein. It is warm satisfying, salty and delicious. Don't use the stuff from a can, I swear it tastes like what toilet Water would taste like. Either make some hood broth from homemade or use mrs. Grass chicken noodle Soup mix but leave the noodles out. Just use the seasoning packet and little golden egg and water. I was so thankful when my bariatric team told me to make homemade broth vs. using the canned garbage. Take it one day at a time and keep your eye on the prize. You actually get a lot of benefit out of the liquid diet. Your liver loses weight immediately making the surgery easier, you break a lot of good habits, you end up so sick of sugar that it is hard to tolerate after. Good luck to you on your diet and upcoming surgery.

Switched to rapid weight gain HELP
I would absolutely yo back to the basics. Start with the pouch test. Track everything you eat and drink, ensure the rules are in place: Nothing to eat or drink 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after Measure your food 64 oz. of Water 1 gram of Protein for every inch you are tall Exercise - 30 minutes a day minimum I would venture to guess if you go back and look you have let some of the basics fall off and that is why you are gaining, This is what I would

Pain while drinking?
@@stayce5, Have u tried drinking those fluids at different temperatures? I know I still have a hard time drinking ice cold water but room temperature water is fine. Yet, my protein drinks have to be icy cold.

Tell me your secret
@@leag78, Ukcathy is exactly right. Everyone loses weight at a different rate. It has a lot to do with how much weight they need to lose (starting point). You will notice over time that weight loss slows down to a crawl and you have to fight for every single pound. I lost a lot in my first 8 weeks but since then, if I lose between 5 and 10lbs a month if I am lucky. Also, in the end everyone that loses a bit slower catches up to those who lost quickly in the beginning. You have lost 32lbs in the first six weeks! That is significant. When was the last time you lost so much so quickly? Remember slow and steady wins the race. Also you certainly did not put this weight on in 6 weeks, you cannot expect it to come off in six weeks either. Stay positive and keep doing what you are doing. You are making great progress already! Congratulations!

Small (but amazing) accomplishments
Yeah! These things seem so small in the scheme of things but people just do not understand until they have suffered with obesity. Congratulations on a significant accomplishment! There will be so many more positives in the future. The other day I was sitting in my recliner after dinner. I had the seat reclined back and I noticed that I had my whole left leg crossed over the opposite leg completely putting my left foot up by my hip. It was almost as if I was 10 years old again! I have lost so much weight that I can sit cross legged on the floor too. I have not been able to do that since after the birth of my second child. He is now 32! Good luck on all of the upcoming victories you will have. It starts really getting exciting now!

Worried about dumping syndrome with gastric bypass....advice...thoughts?
Acid reflux is usually the culprit that changes people from the sleeve to bypass. I know I was one of those and thank goodness I went that route. First, I have never had a single bout of reflux or Gerd since surgery. Second, I have seen so many people that end up taking the chance of going with band or sleeve and end up having to have a revision. The sleeve can cause people who have never had reflux to get it. I am glad my bariatric team educated my fully on this. I wanted to do this only once.

Newbie and I have my first surgeon visit
I might suggest sharing your feelings about your weight and how it makes you feel so that he has a clear understanding. Then invite him to your appointment with you so he is a partner in your decision. This is very hard on your significant other especially when they themselves are overweight or obese. Good luck.

NEW
@@tracynicole5181, welcome and congratulations on your upcoming surgery and more importantly your healthy new life! I used a really horrible Protein recommended by my bariatric team for my pre op diet. I think they were way too darn sweet which turned out good because now I cannot tolerate much sweet. I personally would recommend Premier Protein ready made shakes because each carries 30grams of protein and only 1 gram of sugar. They are the only protein supplement that I use now. The other advice I would give you is to make yourself a really good homemade chicken broth. You will need that rich savory warm flavor during your pre op and the crap in the can simply will not cut it. I was on a two week all liquid diet and that broth kept me sane! Good luck with your surgery! I hope you have a safe and speedy recovery!
