  1. I'm excited to share that my surgery is just five days away! I started considering the surgery in January when my family doc recommended that I look into it. I've tried just about every diet out there and have had NO long-term success. I've been through all of the pre-op tests and requirements and my insurance company has deemed it medically necessary and will pay 100% for the surgery and doc. I'm getting very excited about it, although I have to admit that I'm also nervous. Everything is all set, all I have to do is continue following the pre-surgery diet and head to the hospital on the morning of surgery. Hoping for the best.
  2. Hi all, I had surgery on Tuesday morning and everything went very well. The surgeon was very happy with how surgery went. I'm still sore and moving slowly, but each day gets better. I'm having a bit of trouble getting in the Water and Protein shakes as directed by the doc because it feels so strange and I feel full so quickly. I'm hoping all of that will settle down over the next couple of days. I think part of it is just my wacky nerves, as when my nerves are on overload I have a hard time swallowing food/drink, so hopefully all of that will settle down soon. Looking forward to being healed and getting on with this process of losing weight and getting healthier! :-)
  3. WOW! Tomorrow is the BIG day! I'm getting really excited! My excitement actually outweighs my nervousness. Today is a Clear liquids day, and Jello if I need something else to curb the hunger. The surgery should be over by this time tomorrow. Trying to think of everything I need to take to the hospital with me .... pulling things together for the hospital and getting the house in order will help with the few nerves I'm having. :-)
  4. This site has been beneficial to me in my decision making, also. When my doc first brought it up to me, I was hesitant and a bit frightened about it .... could I really be that overweight that surgery would be necessary .... unfortunately the answer was 'yes.' I'm scheduled for my surgery this coming Tuesday (TWO days away!) and am looking forward to it. I'm still a bit nervous, but after reading posts on this site, my nerves have calmed down considerably. I'm really looking forward to getting healthy again and feeling better than I have in years. I'll be happy when the blood pressure comes down and the sleep apnea goes away. Good luck in your decision making process.
  5. Good luck to you, too Pkdvm!
  6. July 22nd for me! That's only THREE days away! :-) I'm getting pretty excited about it. The pre-diet hasn't been to bad. I've really only been hungry the past couple of days. Fortunately my insurance company has deemed it medically necessary and have approved it for 100% coverage. I'm soooooo ready to get off of the blood pressure meds and other meds that I need because of my weight. Good luck to everyone with your surgeries!
  7. Thanks everyone! I appreciate the support!
  8. My doc recently suggested I consider sleeve surgery and I'm a bit frightened about it.
  9. Thanks so much for this good information! I really like your outlook about exercise, in that it's not solely for weight loss or for weight maintenance; that's a good mindset to try to adopt. Truthfully, I had almost talked myself out of consulting the surgeon yesterday (already!) and then a good friend forwarded me information from a WLS veteran who also knows several other people who have had the surgery and have done quite well with it. Between what I read here and the information that the friend's friend shared, I'm once again leaning toward consulting the surgeon for the surgery. I really appreciate that you took the time to share your thoughts! Thanks!
  10. Wow, already? That's great! I'm amazed!
  11. I also have questions about exercise. When did you start exercising after surgery? Is there some healing time allowed? When you start building muscle (which is heavier than fat), does the weight loss slow down? I'm nervous about the exercise. I have Fibromyalgia and the pain that it causes my feet and legs prevents me from doing much exercise right now. I'm sure that losing weight will help lessen the pain in my feet and will hopefully make exercising easier.
  12. Thank you all for your enouragement and information. I'm so happy for you all and where you're at in your weight loss; I only hope I can be as successful. I've had so much failure in everything else that I've tried, seeing your progress gives me hope. I'm also wondering what happens when a person hits their goal weight, what happens then? How do you maintain it? Do you still eat very small amounts and take supplements for the rest of your life? Do you increase the quantity you eat and lessen the supplements? I know I could never go back to the way I eat now (quantity, quality, selection, etc.), but I'm trying to get a feel for what it's like when you hit your goal. Have your docs or others shared what to expect?
  13. Thanks for your feeback, everyone, I appreciate it. Were you pretty nervous about the surgery? Granted, I've had the stomach flu this week, but every time I think of the surgery, I get a bit more sick to my stomach. I truly need to do something and have thought about WLS, it just seems more real now that my doc suggested it and actually gave me a referral to a bariatric surgeon.
  14. Thanks for your encouragement. I just have so many questions and the unknown is what fuels my fear. Right now I have a lot of acid reflux, when my stomach would be reduced by 80%, would the reflux go away or would it be worse? I've been on some really restrictive diets (HCG = 500 calories a day) where you always felt weak from not many calories or dizzy from the supplements of other diets, etc. After you've healed form surgery, do you feel weak from such a low quantity of food, or do the Protein supplements help with that?
