TN - Charles Huddleston
I wanted to write a review about my hospital experience. I had my surgery October 24, 2013 by Dr. Charles Huddleston. Every appointment I had with him, before surgery, was informative, helpful, and considerate. He was extremely willing to talk about the different surgical procedures with both my mum and I. He was never rude and he never belittled my weight problems. On the day of surgery, I got to see him an some of the team. I was able to voice all my surgery concerns with the team, and had reassurance. After surgery, I was told he did visit me after I got settled in my room. (( I don't remember him visiting, due to the surgery meds. )) Later that day, he visited me again, when I was more awake. Again, he told me follow up care, he told me how surgery went, etc. He then told me he would see me tomorrow morning. Sure enough, the next day I got to see him. Later on the second day, I got to see him again I saw my Dr. Huddleston a total of four times, in two days. He's very concerned for making sure his patients feel safe and secure. He doesn't want you to feel out of the loop. In all honesty, I rate my entire experience with him as a whole 10/10. If you're wanting a bariatric surgery, I urge you to make a consultation appointment with him!!

How often do you weigh?
At first, every day / every other day. My surgeon said I should weigh once every two weeks because it's NOT about immediate / short term weight loss, it's about LONG term weight loss. A lot of people get overly upset if they gain one or two pounds, but they don't seem to understand that a lot of things can make you "gain" weight. Examples would be if you have a full bladder, if you've not recently had a bowel movement, Water weight, hormones, having your menstrual cycle. In conclusion, I don't really think it's beneficial to weigh too often.

Workouts
Not gonna lie: I was a major potato before my Sleeve. Now, I can walk around 9+ miles a day -- just in workout. I'm almost two months out, too. Currently, I can't afford a gym membership, so all my exercise is walking right now.

Anybody else freaked out by the idea of never being able to enjoy carbs again?
I had my VSG 10/24/13 and I have no cravings for sugar, carbs, or anything. It could happen to you as well. Why eat something when you literally do not crave it at all?

Fitbit Vs Up
Has it proved to be very beneficial and easy to use?

Gulping Liquids
They don't want gulping because it can trap air in the stomach when you swallow. Trapped air can cause gas pain.

Do I Really Want To Do This?
I'll share my experience, maybe it'll help you. I'm twenty years old, and I've been working to get my VSG about a month before my 18th birthday. (My MD suggested surgery.) During that time, I tried many different things to try and lose weight traditionally. I also did many tests and blood work to make sure my body was healthy. This year, I got my surgery and honestly... I don't regret it. I'm glad I got it done, because now I have a whole team to help me in my journey. I have a nutritionist who tries to come up with food ideas / suggestions. My surgeon is so wonderful and helpful. I rate him a full 10/10. Now, I watch what I eat because I don't want to take in junk. In fact, most of my food cravings have completely disappeared. My eating has been for the better. Everyone in my house has been sick, and I've barely been sick due to my better eating and getting in my Vitamins. If you're having doubts, maybe talk to a counselor about your feelings.

Medicalert Bracelet-Yes Or No?
A suggestion would be a USB drive, which can have ALL your information, including pictures. I know there are USB with the medical alert icons, and you can make it into a bracelet or necklace.

I Have Two Stupid Questions... I'm Sorry...but
I was allowed to brush my teeth. In fact, in my pre-surgery paperwork, it was listed to thoroughly brush teeth and tongue. Before surgery, it's required no food/drink. Basically, before surgery, they don't want any food or liquids in your stomach, which can cause you to vomit during surgery, due to the anesthesia upsetting the stomach.

How Many Incisions Did You Have?
I had five. Four on my stomach, the main was not at/in my belly button, though. One at where my bra sits, so sometimes it gets really irritated. I didn't have a drain tube.

How Much Help Did You Need?
For me, I needed the extra help. I had my sleeve surgery on 10/24. I stayed in the hospital that night and on the 25th, I was released about 9 - 9:30 PM I wasn't able to bend down to pick up anything off the floor, no heavy lifting, and I was on my pain meds for about a week or two. I couldn't sleep and I had to sleep on the couch to sleep on my back. I'm now a month and two days post op, able to lift (milk jug weight or less), able to pick things off the floor, I can sleep in bed on my sides. I'm able to do things on my own again.

How soon after surgery did you resume taking vitamins?
I don't have to use chewables. I double-checked with my surgeon and everything. He asked a lot questions concerning about it, and I guess my answers were sufficient. Besides, in my town, finding adult vitamins with the requirements is hard enough. Lets not make it impossible, and make it chewable.

Last Meal
I had a "goodbye to overeating" dinner with my mum, sister, and boyfriend. We all went out to Cheddar's. I also wanted to have spinach dip one last time, for a long while. xD

Are You Having Someone Stay With You In The Hospital?
My boyfriend and mum was waiting while I had my surgery. My mum stayed with me for awhile, to make sure I was stable, see how I was, and to get me talking a little. My boyfriend stayed the night with me, because I have panic and anxiety about staying in unfamiliar places. He stayed because he wanted to make sure I wouldn't be alone and scared.

4 Things I Wish I Would've Known Pre Op
I'm a month and day post-op. This is my list: I didn't know how painful the first week would be, with a sore stomach, little food, and the machine gas getting out. The food gas pains are also pretty rough. If your stomach really doesn't like a new food being introduced, you get sick. And it can be painful after. Getting the required water in, especially when water tastes bad after drinking so much of it. There's a few complaints xD

Bra After Surgery?
I was in the hospital the day of surgery, and I was in gown. I spent that night and most of the next day at the hospital, being released around 10PM. I didn't wear a bra at all during that time, because I wasn't allowed. Once coming home, I literally didn't wear one for about two weeks. I was able to take off from school, so I could just lounge all the time at home. One time I tried wearing one, and the incision where the breasts meet, kinda hurt. My sides where the band was at hurt as well, especially due to the machine / food gas pains.

What I Hate!
Since I'm making better eating choices, I just feel overall better. I'm not eating junk foods. Yesterday, I had a mini cupcake, and I didn't want more than just one. Today, I'm celebrating my boyfriend's birthday, and I'm looking forward to having the smallest piece of cake there. xD I know that when I'm allowed to exercise, I'll feel even better than now.

How Far Post Op Until Meat?
I'm two days from a month post-op. I followed what my surgeon said, and I've done great. Currently, I can eat whatever I want. My NUT is upset that I listened to my doctor over her, though. But to tell you the truth, I'm feeling better now than what I was, when I was listening to her...

Bloating And Gas Pains?!?!
If you're meaning the gas from surgery, it can take up to like two weeks. BUT! then you could also have gas pains from food. I'm almost a month post-op and I still have gas pains from food. One of the nurses from my surgeon's office had the bypass and she's four months out, still experiencing gas pains from food.

I Dont Think My Nut Believes In Me
Make sure you don't use a lot of salad dressing! From the people who I've interacted with that are vegan or vegetarian, most seem to feel they're better than those who eat meats. Kinda funny to me, since I myself, before my VSG (10/24) was a vegetarian for almost 3 and half years...
