Whine or wine?
My husband is a wine maker & I loooove me some Riesling, in fact it's probably what I miss most post-op. My surgeon said I could drink after 6 months, but to start very slow with it and make sure you're home with someone in case it doesn't sit well and you end up getting super drunk. Like a lot of things in the RNY world there seems to be a lot of differing opinions, but I know people who've had the surgery and drink wine just fine. Best of luck & Cheers!

Liquid diet woes!
I only had to do 1 week of liquid and that was torture for me so I can understand your frustration. Try the Trop50 OJs & Juices and like jaymi suggested, add water to it. And the protein shake crazies...they don't go away!

protien bars
The Quest ones sound good and there's a few Atkins ones that don't sound bad. I haven't had any yet since I'm only 3.5 weeks out, maybe in a few weeks I can try some.

December 2012 Post Op Group
I'm so jealous of all of you that get in 50+oz of water a day. I have a 32oz Nalgene bottle and yesterday was the first time I've been able to finish one, let alone 2!! How do you find the time (or pouch space) to drink that much?!?

Me too! I've tried so many different varieties with different flavored protein powders and I just find them all sickening. The only one I've found to be decent yet is chocolate protein powder mixed with a decaf skinny mocha from Starbucks.

Protein Bars
When did people start eating protein bars (like Quest)? Is 3.5 weeks too early?

going out 2 eat
Great thread, my husband and I went out to eat frequently so it's been a little bit of a challenge for us now that we can't. We wanted to hit the chinese buffet and I was going to get soup, but couldn't justify $9.99 for 1/2 a cup of soup.

I can't wait to have some crackers. The Special K cracker chips are delicious, and not bad if you only eat a few. I'm dying for some crunch in my diet & since celery and lettuce are out of the question, looks like "healthy" crackers will be the way to go. If you're feeling nervous about having them in your house though then you should get rid of them. You don't want to feel bad about what you're eating. Good luck

Should i be concerned?
I will talk with my doctor thanks! What about the constipation/diarrhea? Have others experienced this? I'm 3.5 weeks post op, hope it clears up soon!

Should i be concerned?
Yes I'm on a prescription iron/B-12 pill

Should i be concerned?
So I'm going to preface this with the fact that its going to have some personal, and kind of icky content, but I'm really looking to find out if this is normal or if I should contact my doctor. I'm home sick from work today. I took some laxatives last night because I still haven't been able to go regularly and it had been at least 4 days. Overnight I woke with stomach pains that kept me up, but this morning when I got up to go to work & tried to go to the bathroom I experienced the worst case of constipation I have ever had in my life. It was excruciatingly painful and took me 2 hours to pass. As if that wasn't bad enough, it seems the laxatives have kicked in and I've been having diarrhea this afternoon. Aside from the painful constipation, my stool is still black and tarry in consistency. I'm just wondering if any of you have/are experiencing this and when, if ever, you started to regulate? Do you think I should call my doctor or surgeon? Thanks all and sorry for the gory details.

I just can't get into my fitness pal. I tried a few times before surgery, too, but I always seem to forget to do it.

How are you all making sure you get enough protein/water/calories? Do you measure & count? Because I haven't done that at all and it seems like a major pain. Any tips or tricks?

Chicken has been one of my best friends! I like to have chicken salad made with light mayo & canned chicken with a piece of provolone cheese. I also like to eat rotisserie chicken. I can't eat baked chicken breasts though, it's too tough. Has to be slow cooked or canned.

emotional mess
This is interesting and good to know. I'm at 3 weeks post op now, so I'll keep an eye out for it and warn my husband haha. My Graduate classes start this week, I wonder how the added stress will effect me.

"omfg Wait...you're Having What Type Of Surgery"?
THANK YOU! This sounds so much like me and is so close to what I did! I "came out" if you will on Facebook the day before my surgery because I wanted people to know that there's nothing to be ashamed of, in fact, I'm quite proud of the commitments I've made. Plus, how do you hide dramatic weight loss? Better to explain once then every time someone new sees you. I've been lucky to have positive reception, but there will always be nay-sayers. I too am a Grad student and know the pain of both the tiny desks and the tuition bill! Good luck with your journey!

23 days post op! Food options! Help!
Wow Bward 47 pounds already? Impressive! I had my surgery the day after you and I'm onto the "soft food" stage. Today I had a crab cake (well like 1/3 of one) but pretty much everything Nicole mentioned above is great, plus yogurt SF puddings, italian ice/popsicles, and my new found have is rotisserie chicken from my supermarkets deli section. The leftovers make great chicken salad, too. If you're going to do ground meats I'd start with chicken or turkey & try to stay away from beef for another few weeks. Good Luck! I know how you feel, the liquids were the worst!

December 2012 Post Op Group
Hi All! I just joined yesterday. I'm from Western NY. Had my surgery 12/21/12 (you know, the end of the world). Feeling good, healing nicely, so far, no issues with foods or liquids. Down 25 lbs, hooray!

Question about post op diet
That seems pretty drastic! How are you supposed to get through the first couple of stages if you can't have mushy foods like oatmeal, mashed potatoes or milk? I've seen a lot of different diets (seems like every doc has their own) but I have never seen one that strict...

Feeling bored
I am 3 weeks post-op and I'm finding life to be kind of boring. I feel like my life consists of work, gym, home, sleep, repeat. Going out for dinner and drinks with friends used to be our entertainment for my husband and I. Now that I can't eat or drink I need to find better ways to entertain myself and feel socially connected with others. I like to shop but that gets expensive. Plus, I'd hate to spend $$ on new clothes I'm just going to have to get rid of in a few weeks. Any suggestions for new or creative ways to fill my time?

What to bring to the hospital?
My hospital provided everything for me, but the few things I used were: Chapstick, my own slippers, phone & charger, and laptop. Their toiletries didn't bother me, but if you're particular about things you can bring your own. Wore the same clothes home as I wore there (sweats) and wore hospital gown the whole 2-day stay. Everyone is right, you sleep, then sleep some more. The TV drowned out some of the outside noise for me, but except for the occasional walk I went on, I mostly just slept. Don't pack too much, it's a waste.

When should i start taking Biotin?
My doctor (and the all knowing internet) told me that your hair will fall out regardless around the 3 month mark. However, the Biotin will help your hair look healthier and he recommended using volumizing shampoo. I started the Biotin right after surgery. I haven't lost any hair yet, but there's a definite improvement in how it looks and it's growing faster. Side bonus, my nails look fab, too!
