Have been obese since childhood, was actually on amphetamines and diuretics under a doctor's care in the 5th grade! Have yo-yo dieted all of my life and never achieved ideal body weight through any diet program, although found Weight Watchers to be the most successful. All of my so-called chickens came home to roost, in the form of Type II diabetes, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, arthritis when I hit my 50's. And it STILL took me another 7 years to finally realize I was not going to do this on my own, not without a pretty powerful tool on my side. I chose the sleeve over by-pass because I did not like the idea of malabsorption and dumping syndrome that may accompany the by-pass. Also, I know my personality. If you tell me I can never ever have a cookie again, I know I will be horribly depressed. I need to have the control to make my own choices. And sleeve seemed the best fit. Also, my employer requires 8 months of supervised weight control center visits (nurse practitioner monthly, diet classes monthly, support groups and psychological evaluation and behavior modification) which I think is imperative to success. If you don't recognize the surgery is a tool, and that this is a LIFE change you will not be successful. And I AM going to be successful. To coin a phrase from Apollo 13 "FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION". I am looking forward to a whole new world, of improved health, ease of movement, strength, endurace, energy. I am looking forward to not worrying about fitting into an airline seat or theater seat. I am looking forward to sitting down in any chair and not worry about weight limits. I am looking forward to shopping anywhere, not just the "fat lady store".
