  1. thanks! I will look into that. I have never had a problem with gatorade, so it is def an idea.
  2. I keep seeing people commenting on always drinking lots of crystal light. When I was growing up, I drank it all the time. I found that the more I drank, the more I ate. It gave me the munchies bad. Are there any other drink mixes that would work as well as crystal light but without the munchie attacks?
  3. Here is my question. When people talk about a pre-op diet, do you mean a general diet to lose some of the weight or a full liquid diet? I had to go through a diet/weight management/nutrition class and lose 10% of my body weight. I don't have to do anything beyond that except for nothing after midnight the night before
  4. Heather, My hubby was like that too. He wouldn't talk about it, he refused to listen. He even went as far as calling me when I was at my mothers and had me hand the phone to her. He tried to get her to talk me out of having it done. My mom surprised him and told him that she would not talk me out of it since she was for it to be done. it took a while and a lot of talking, and it turns out he was/is scared. He wasn't afraid I would leave him for bigger and better things, but that he doesn't want to see me sick. I am glad he was able to get his fears out early.
  5. It's the same way when a person hears that you are even thinking of having the surgery. I am not known at times for keeping my mouth shut and have told people that yes i am having it done. I don't see a need to hide anything from people. They are all seeing me lose the weight anyway. I keep having people I work with come up and tell me that I look great. After such a wonderful comment, they will turn around and tell me that I don't need to do anything else, surgery wise. These people look at me and see someone who is proportionate. I look ok, just big. They don't realize how big I am, I just hide it well. Why do skinny people think that losing the weight, and keeping it off, is the easiest thing to do? No one believes me when I tell them i will gain it all back by the time we return to work in August without some kind of help? I am not going to go by what they think, I am doing this for me. I don't want to lose my life because I am afraid to do anything to make it better.
  6. Hi! I;m from Fort Worth area, Benbrook and Fort Worth border. I am awaiting surgery on the 19th and am starting to get antsy!
  7. Lol, I am not laughing at what you are asking about, but more at the word use. Being a first grade teacher, I love silly little word plays like that. I am afraid of having skin in excess like that. I say keep going with it. it has been 3.5 weeks since you had surgery. The skin is elastic and should go back down. I have been lucky with what weight I have lost since I started all this. I stall, so to speak, but my body is settling everything. You might see it one day, but the next you will notice that the stretch marks are getting thinner and going away.....always the best part. Keep your chin up, lol, use tape if you need to, everything will work the way it is supposed to.
  8. I have surgery scheduled for the 19th of May also. I don't think your fears should let you stop everything. It would not be normal to go into something like this without fears. I am nervous and excited. i am afraid, yet positive. If you go into the surgery saying I will come out of everything and it will be the way I want it to be (positive ), you will do it. I was talking with my mom earlier today, and she is at a size 14 right now and I am a size 20-22. I would love to be her size, and actually plan to go smaller. We were talking about me being able to "go shopping in her closet" when I go back to work in August. We had to laugh because I haven't been able to wear her clothes since I was 12. Anyway, look at the surgery and the results in a positive manner instead of one in fear. If you go in afraid, it will whip your a**. You want to come out the winner! If you need other support or want to talk with someone at the same waiting point as yourself, chat with me. i am still trying to reconcile that i will be having the surgery in 2 weeks. I think I am looking at it as a break before school lets out for the summer and I have teh time off again. I just love summers!!!
  9. I use teh scale in the nurse's office every day after lunch, minus shoes. It is bad, but one of the requirements for the surgery the VA gives is to be at a certain weight, usually 5% lost. I watch to make sure I stay where I need to be. If I lose, great, if not oh well. As long as I don't add to. Plus I like watching the numbers go down for the first time in over 6 years. I know I am getting smaller because I am down to almost no work clothes that fit. My body seems to be staying proportionate, luckily enough.
  10. Hmmm, cool thanks. yep, haven't had that done. i know they will do the leak test, but that is all I have heard. All I did for the pre-op was to become a pin cushion that moves on command. I also got some nifty soap to use for three days leading up to the surgery.
  11. I have a quick question. I am schedules for the 19th. I went to my mental health provider today, I am bipolar, and she changed meds on me. She also said that she has to check for the absorption rate. Has anyone ever had problems with the absorption rate being different? Do you think I might get a med change again after the surgery? I'm nervous about that because I finally have the bipolar basically calmed down and steady. i don't want to have to keep changing my meds.
  12. I say ignore them. i have a friend at work who I talk to on a daily basis. She had the bypass almost 3 years ago and has lost 100lbs and has kept it off. She gives me support as well as suggestions for my eating patterns adn for getting my hubby to accept that I am having the surgery. There is also someone who had the band at the school I work in. She had the surgery right before school started. In all honesty, you can't tell that she had it at all. I have lost more weight than she has and all I did was watch my food intake. My suggestion is to ignore the negative. if you feel that you want this surgery, that it will work for you... go for it. This is your body, your choice. Be honest with your doctor and yourself. Go into it saying I will heal amazing, I will do amazing and I will look and feel amazing!
  13. Good luck on your day!! What is the test you guys are talking about that tastes like chalk? I have my surgery on the 19th and haven't heard anything about that test.
  14. I started reading the stories on here recently. I have hit the two week mark, got all of my pre-op work taken care of this morning. I wanted to say thanks and good job to everybody. The stories you guys tell about your losses, the tips on diets, etc has all been really helpful for me. I am ready to "get 'er done"!
  15. Cool deal. i hope it all works out for you in the end.
  16. What VA clinic did you go through? I am scheduled for the surgery on the 19th in Dallas
  17. Thanks. I think that might be why I might not have to do the diet. I will find out more tomorrow at the pre-op. I have lost weight, and all since July, mainly in the last few months. The VA requires 5-10% body weight loss and kept off for the surgery otherwise they start you over again. The surgeon's reasoning was that I had already lost weight and was doing good because I am still losing. I have lost an additional 5lbs since I saw her in February. I am just curious.
  18. I have the same insurance. I recently got the book with all of the info if I wanted to change my plans. I wish you luck with everything and the insurance. I am going through the VA, but a friend went through BCBS TRS and she had to do the 6 month consecutive and a mental eval. I would do more research on what the costs are, I thought I read it would end up being around 8 after all copays etc.
  19. I was told ahead of time to try and find some protein shakes, and have tried a few. I have severe lactose intolerance and am having some problems with whey. At the Sprouts market here in town, I found a bottle of what I thought was milk, but it was a protein shake. It was made by one of the national milk companies, Shamrock Farms or something like that. If you like milk, it is really good. They have vanilla, chocolate and I want to say strawberry too. They don't have any weird aftertaste and to me taste great. I have had the chocolate and thought it was true chocolate milk. I didn't get sick, either. The bottle said it had 20 grams of protein, so I plan on getting more. I hope you find something you like.
  20. I keep seeing people talking about a liquid diet for a certain amount of time prior to the surgery. When I went to the doctor to get the final approval and to meet the surgeon, I asked about the liquid diet. I asked her if it was necessary. She told me that I could if I wanted to, but to just make sure I don't eat anything a certain number of hours before hand. What is the purpose of the prediet? What are suggestions because I have tried some of the protein shakes adn have found I can't digest them. They give me really bad gas or diarrhea. Because of being lactose intolerant, even with lactaid, I cant do slimfast. any help would be great.
  21. Hi! My name is Lissy, and I am overweight......lol, thought I could start out funny. I am in a waiting pattern right now because I am awaiting my surgery date and am getting antsy. I am scheduled to go in on May 19th and can not wait for the day to get here faster. I have been battling the weight I put on over a 10 year period. I put most of the weight on in a 2 year period and can't get rid of it. I have tried to lose the weight naturally but can't keep it off. i recently married my second husband and he is against the surgery. He thinks that I could lose the weight if I tried. He doesn't understand the weight difficulties, but then again he is 130 lbs and is trying to gain weight. I came on here because it looks like a great site for help and support both before and after the surgery. I am hoping to get insight into what it is I am doing. Off topic, how can I get those nifty weight trackers? Thanks in advance for your thoughts, support and help.
