  1. Isn't there a well established support group in Augusta? Anyone there interested? If you had surgery in Augusta please rely to the Augusta Regional Bariatric Pal thread.

    Surgery scheduled with second thoughts

Snarky, Type "Duodenal Switch" in the FB search.
  3. I had DS revision to the Gastric Sleeve after 4 years and regain. I would not even CONSIDER any other first time surgery than DS, if my BMI and medical clearance qualified me. The record of the DS is clearly superior to any other surgery, and the maintenance is the key to not having to have revision and regain....

Duodenal Switch / Weight loss stall

I stayed at 900 calories for four years after the sleeve and still regained. I thought i would lose slowly, but I still gained weight. While it would be nice to make the million, once our abused metabolisms shut down, it can stop or gain, and nothing we can do. I am hoping the DS malabsorption will help. If it doesn't I refuse to punish myself...
  5. I don't get the removal of the DS forum. WTF? I am just getting to the point of getting out again on the internet, after my DS on 8/26/14. Was there no announcement or explanation? DS is the ONLY surgery that really works across the board. I wasted 4 years with the Gastric Sleeve and SO many people are headed the same direction. Everyone knows the pendulum is swinging away from VSG and RNY, as both become a very low calorie diet for life!

    WLS and 12 Step Support

WLS, OA and my Higher Power... Ain't nobody's business but my own. The fact that so many WLSers don't avail themselves of the 12 Steps, and vice versa, is their business. I can't imagine not having both to even have a chance at stopping the weight gain that was killing me.
  7. I do better with pretty much the same meal plan, four years out, for VSG maintenance. In March, I lost 14 pounds of the 50# regain, after I was fired from DS Surgery. I have discovered coffee shakes, salads and soy protein and vegs for dinner is the best for me,keeping it around 800c and exercising 2.5 hrs daily. I am insulin resistant, and as soon as my tool stopped working -- regain started -- even though I was not eating carbs... Anyone else fighting the scale? rdc

    Replacement for Dr. Aceves?

Can you get Ungson to work with him? He used to do surgeries with Aceves, when requested, for a nominal fee.

    I Threw It Out!

I'm not sure the picture of fudge is big enough!!!! lol
  11. I have regained 50 lbs over four years. since Jul 28, 2010, have been on 1100 calories and exercise. Never added starches, carby foods.... My metabolism is shot, and cannot lose weight. I am seeing surgeon about Sleeve Revision to RNY or DS.

    REGAIN AND REVISION

Well the truth is that every sleeve stretches. It would not be possible to eat enough to get nutrition after the DS, the second part of the operation, for which VSG was originally assigned. For some not a problem, for others re-sleeve or revision is an increasing reality.
  13. Live in Gwinnett, central for North GA, would love to have a veterans'/ regain/ revision group, for folks > 1 year out. What a great support it would be! Anybody else?
  14. Live in Gwinnett. Prepping for revision of VSG to RNY or DS. Meeting with surgeon to discuss next week.
  15. Actually there are some situations where weight loss is impossible, particularly when taking meds that add weight, or resist wt loss....

    Bipolar disorder question

Many have problems initially, but due to so many different reasons. I had no problems with my seroquel and Paxil, but In maintenance, I immediately started regain, due to the Seroquel XR. Meet with your PsyDoc and talk to a master's level pharmacist who has experience in this department...

    Meds vs sleeve

The sleeve is the perfect answer to those who must take meds. It is not malabsorptive and does not interact with most people's meds. That having been said, for me, it was the worst choice because there is no malabsorption and my meds make it hard to lose weight especially after the sleeve ceased to function... Consult with your Dr for your particular situation... rdc
  18. In the beginning, I was so pleased to have chosen to have the VSG, Gastric sleeve, without " Duodenal Switch (DS)." I was convinced that if I followed every rule religiously, did all the other health things I was supposed to, it would work, and I was ready to work it, for three years. ! I was wrong. Although I lost 140# I am still at a 37-ish BMI. No matter what calories, exercise, etc. I subjected myself to, no luck! My Dr recommended that I was a candidate for Duodenal Switch I am already proceeding to be resleeved and complete the 2nd part, Duodenal Switch. As more and more Sleevers (and Bypassers) fail, the emergence of the DS is assured….IMHO when one actually studies the facts rather than listen to rumor and wive's tales, it's a no-brainer for LT success! rdc Before After Afterer
  19. Once you get to a certain point, all surgeries, except the DS, turn unto a calorie game. My sleeve was a great disappointment once I got to maintenance. Just got turned down for DS, so now I have to figure out how to lose 50 lbs with an inactive, misshapen sleeve.

Sleeve About as Effective as Band!

    Regain occurs in Maintenance...

Sleeve About as Effective as Band!

Calories in and out, not so much for everyone (See: "Good Calories, Bad Calories"). Metabolism has a great impact, and without the malabsorption, the Sleeve is a poor choice for the the insulin resistant pt.

How Do You Plan Your Meals?

I do better with pretty much the same meal plan, four years out, for VSG maintenance. In March, I lost 14 pounds of the 50 regain, after I was fired from DS Surgery. I have discovered coffee shakes, salads and soy protein and vegs for dinner is the best for me,keeping it around 800c and exercising 2.5 hrs daily. I am insulin resistant, and as soon ass my tool stopped working -- regain started -- even though I was not eating carbs...
  23. Lots of supposition going around here. Opinions and hearsay are not a good way to determine psych med efficacy. I have been on Seroquel XR and regular, depending on the stressors, weather and other factors that affect meds, and klonopin, but four years out on the sleeve, I have never heard of or experienced absorption issues re psych meds...
  24. Looks like I will be doing an endoscopy and colonoscopy before surgery. Scheduled for psych eval. Also need a consult re: changing med prescriptions for absorption change. Otherwise, pretty much the same as the first time in 2012. Don't think the sleep apnea clearance will be necessary this time. Has anyone else had to jump through any additional hoops?
  25. Metabolism. If you have a sensitive metabolism that is not yet injured by long years of dieting and abuse, you are more likely to be able to adjust, add back good carbs, and control your weight with portion and choice, plus exercise. OTOH, if you have a resistant metabolism, you will find that only VLCD , no carbs, and exercise will allow you to maintain the loss. Eventually you will not be able to keep up this regimen. Injury, depression, life events, etc happen to all of us. Once the regain starts, it is hard to get the metabolism to lose or hold weight loss. I tried to get the DS and was unsuccessful, with a total regain of 50#. Back On Track and working with a coach have helped me, at 4 years out, to lose an initial amount of weight. I hope it will eventually allow me to get back to my best weight which was -144#. Lots of emotional and headwork necessary for most people to make and maintain the change...{:>} rdc
