Well here it goes in a nutshell ...for as long as I can remember I have been overweight! I have tried numerous diets from private nutritionists , Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, South Beach Diet, Dr. Siegel's Cookie Diet (don't even go there!!), and more that I am sure I am not even listing. My overweight was more in the form of thinking I was an "average / big boned woman" and my skinny friends were the exception; rather then "obese" the terminology that my doctors now use when describing me. I have fluctuated between a size 12-16 most of my life and can only briefly remember getting down to a size 10. I'm very active and like to play tennis. I have no problem getting to the gym and truly love the feeling you get after a great workout. I can stay on the elipitical for two hours and burn 1000 calories....but that is one of my problems in weight management.... I was staying on the eliptical for hours only to reward myself with crap later. In my head always saying, "oh you burned xxx calories, you'll be fine."
I was diagnosed with an under-active thyroid when I was 13 and have been on synthyroid ever since, then PCOS when I was 25. I do not use either of these as excuses in my weight but they are obstacles in trying to lose but it honestly seems like there has not been a year or so much as a month that has gone by, that I have not tried something, somehow, to lose weight.
A year and half ago my endocrinologist suggested the Lap Band since my weight was at the highest ever - 227 and, bonus, I was becoming pre-diabetic. I left visably upset but swore that I would lose the weight on my own rather then go for WLS. My father passed away in August 2009 to sudden cardiac arrest and I was already worrying about hereditary heart disease problems. I told my mother, siblings, boyfriend and friends that I would succeed since I had lost weight previously on other diets.
Fast forward to today and no shocker.... I did not manage to lose the weight and I am no better off where I was a year and a half ago. Just another year older yet hopefully wiser because after my physical with my PCP on Friday, June 15, he suggested lap band surgery as well and this time I listened!
I went to the seminar on Wednesday and had my doctor's appointment today (Thursday, June 21) and I am booked to be banded on Tuesday, September 18. I am definitely on an emotional roller-coaster at the moment and feeling a lot of anxiety but from reading people's posts and profiles, I am motivated and excited at the same time.
