Hopefully surgery in January 2012
I just got the call, surgery on January 23, 2012!! Start Pre-op diet January 8, 2 Protein shakes and 1 meal. Now I just hope there are no snowstorms that get in the way. Been experimenting with Protein Shakes, I really LOVE the EAS AdvantEdge carb control RTD. So I'm stocking up on that and some unflavored powder to mix with Crystal Light during the post surgery clear phase. Skinny me, Here I come, to stay!!

Post surgery concerns
nut said even 'clear' protein drinks are thicker. But doc says that I can have 'clear' protein drinks around day two. With the doc being aware of the situation he's going to watch for a problem, so I should be fine.

Post surgery concerns
Hi MeMeMEEE, my reactions are more than just sleepy, they are debilitating. Profuse cold sweats and dizziness being the worst. I have an appointment on Friday and will also discuss, then. At a support group last night, one woman who was 6 years post op, described how she experiences dumping syndrome, and that also sounded similar, except I've had it all my life.

Post surgery concerns
to GrannyK, I'm going to ask about adding protein powder to clear liquids or drinking clear protein drinks. I'm sure there is a reason that they don't want me to have those for the first six days, so I need to weigh their reasons against mine. I don't know if it is too hard to digest, and that's why they say to avoid those things. I don't want to do anything to affect the surgery results or my health.

Fried Foods
Hi, I too LOVE fried, crispy food. I found a website called Hungry-Girl.com. This woman has the most amazing recipes! Check out her recipes for faux frying. Don't balk at the fact that she uses All-Bran, it is delicious and you won't miss the fat. Some things I actually like better than the fried version, such as zucchini sticks and eggplant parmesan. Her other recipes are equally delicious, some ingredients may be things that you think you won't like, certain veggies for example, but you need to have an open mind. The only thing on her site, so far, that I don't like are Shirataki noodles, can't get past the dead fish smell!! YUCK :arf: I have even found some of her recipes that are so similar, in taste, to some of my classic Thanksgiving recipes, that I am going to serve them and not tell anyone that they are healthified.

Post surgery concerns
I am going for the sleeve and I have two concerns: The first is that the nutritionist has told me that for six days after surgery, I can only have Clear liquids such as Water and decaf tea, no 'clear' Protein drinks. All of my life, my body has had a strong need for protein. If I don't have enough protein, I become very weak, cold profuse sweating and sometimes pass out. Six days with no protein sounds un-doable. My second question is in regards to liquid intake. My body has also always required more liquid than alot of people that I know. I need to drink 12-24 oz. per hour, in order to not have a sudden crash feeling in which I need to lay down or sleep. I am told that I won't be able to drink more that 6 oz. per hour, less than half of what I need. I have had MANY (1hr-5hr) glucose tolerance tests, since the symptoms resemble hypoglycemia. During the tests I have had severe symptoms, but my glucose levels are normal. I also get symptoms similar to hypoglycemia after eating sugar or drinking juice on an empty stomach, so since childhood, I only have protein for Breakfast. Protein will sometimes stop the reaction after it has started. There have also been times that I have not recently eaten, when I feel a pain in my stomach (like I need to move my bowels) then quickly become soaked with sweat, dizzy and weak for about 10-15 minutes. Both of these have been happening for at least 35 years. Has anyone had these symptoms before/after sleeve gastrectomy? How can I get through 6 days of no protein? Will I adjust to less liquid? I want the sleeve VERY badly and don't want anything to get in the way, so any advice would help.

Just want to hear some personal experiences. What was length of hospital stay? How did you feel, immediately upon awakening and as time progressed, pain, eating, etc...?? Any complications?? Just want to here what to expect, don't worry, can't scare me out of it, I have a high tolerance for pain, just want to be prepared.

Fidelis managed Medicaid in NY state
Anyone have the sleeve covered with Fidelis managed Medicaid. Doc thinks it may be a problem, but will push for it due to severe ulcerative colitis. I did not get surgery two years ago, because sleeve was not offered in my area, and I will not have band or bypass.

Hopefully surgery in January 2012
My name is Deb, I'm 5'2" and 250 lbs now, was 275, about 5 months ago. I have had a hard time maintaining a 'normal' weight, all my life. Two years ago, I started the process for bariatric surgery. Due to trouble affording co-pays and sleeve gastrectomy not being offered in my area, I did not have surgery. Now, sleeve is being done, insurance may not readily approve, but my surgeon sees that I have researched and am making an informed decision. I feel that a sleeve is the least risky. He is going to push the insurance to cover it, as I do have severe ulcerative colitis, under control with medication. He is going to say that there is a possibility, in the future, of having part of my colon removed, so bypass would be too risky. I have been eating healthier and losing weight, but really need the surgery as a boost to my progress, and help make the weight loss permanent. Looking through before/after pics brings tears to my eyes, thinking that will be me!! I can't wait to get back my energy, self confidence and the positive outgoing personality change that comes when I am thin.
