tsteves1 got a reaction from myjourneyagain in Would It Be Stupid??
Would I be stupid to set a goal to get to my goal weight by my 26th birthday? I started at 270 and as of 3/12 I was at 252, not sure of my weight today but my scale says 245, will confirm weight again on April 3.
Any who my 25th birthday is Monday April 2nd I was just doing he math and if I averaged 2 lbs a week then I could be down to my goal weight of 155 by my 26th.
Is that too lofty of a goal? Would I be setting myself up for failure? When I originally went into this my goal was to be at goal by my 27th birthday so that my husband and I could start trying for a baby again. It would be great if I could be there a year sooner even though my surgeon recommends no pregnancy for 18 months. That would give me some time to enjoy being thin again before my husband starts getting on me about the baby gig.

I had my surgery on Monday 2/27 and I was the same way. I was so excited about getting the band but scared of surgery and recovery (im a wuss when it comes to recovery) lol but it was fine. I wasn't really scared days before but once I got to the hospital and sat in the waiting room the fear kicked in. After a bit I got to a room and changed, got my IV (I have horrible veins so it took about 20 minutes to draw the 2 viles of blood) and waited. Then the surgeon came in and told me the hospital was behind and just relax for a bit and just seeing him made me feel a little better. They came about 45 minutes later and took me up to the operating room area and parked my bed in the hall while they finished closing up the last patient and getting things ready. As i sat in the hallway looking out the window for about 30 minutes, I felt very calm and relaxed, like that was the point of no return so no use in stressing now. When I went into the operating room I got on the table they set me up, the nurse cracked a joke and then I was gone. Woke up in recovery, feeling very nauseated so I threw up a bit. When I threw up I peed a bit and the nurse had to take off my pants and put towels under me till i got to my room and THAT was seriously the worst part of it all. Right before they shipped me off to my room the surgeon came and checked on me, I told him I threw up and muttered about being sorry that I ruined my band already. He said not to worry that he got it on there good and I was fine. Rode listlessly to my room trying to keep my eyes open. I laid in the bed for about an hour dosing off so my husband had to poke me every few minutes and make me sip. Then the nurse came in, made me get up and go to the bathroom and get dressed. I walked in circles around the room for a few, hubby signed my release papers and home to sleep I went.
The first few days it was rough to get up and move around because of the pull you feel on the port. By day 4 I was getting up as often as I could when I was home alone and my hubby was nice enough to help me get up when he was home so I didn't have to strain. I slept on the couch until this past Friday. Last night I was finally able to sleep on my tummy, could have sooner im sure but I was too scared to try, and it was amazing. By the way I live in a 3rd floor condo so all of those stairs were killer so I didn't even go down the first 2 days.
I feel good today! Each day I feel better (The muscle the port is sewed too is still sore but nothing I cant handle) and soon I will be the same ol Tracie I was before except with better eating habits, better self confidence (working on that with psychologist) and a smaller figure.
So that is my story and I hope it helps ease a bit of the nerves. You are making a great life change for yourself and I am sure you will be fine.

tsteves1 got a reaction from KryssieWantsHerBand in Approval Seems A Bit Too Easy.
I ended up not having to have anything from a PCP. They took my word that I have been overweight at least 5 years and the approval was still very easy. I have my psych eval and promised to keep in contact with my bariatric case worker as well as my behavioral health case worker and got a first letter approval! I was psyched and I am banded!

That is a very good cautionary tale on how important the fills are. I am lucky because my surgeon tentatively schedules the first fill for week 6, which i think is fabulous! Keep up with the fills and the good work! You will get that 5 lbs and more off before you know it.

First up, we are paying for the medical expertise associated with fills - assessment of whether we need one, their level of skill etc. Secondly, fills require a special needle, and that saline stuff is actually prepared to a medical standard.
For me, those are peace of mind factors.
But that is easy for me to say as all my fills are covered under Australia's healthcare system and I have never been in a situation where I have had to decide whether to get medical treatment or not based on cost.

I love spicy hot foods. For lunch today I brought in pinwheels (flour tortilla, shredded chicken, jalapenos, tomato, taco seasoning and reduced fat cream cheese) but I can't eat them plain like that. I add Franks red hot to the them. I am sweating more now than after a strenuous workout.
I would hope it was doing something for me. I might be burning some calories, just reaching up to wipe the sweat from my brow. LOL

The thing to remember about statistics is that they lie! lol. Or at least misrepresent. The 40% - 50% number is an average. That means it includes people who have lost NO weight or even regained weight as well as people who have lost 100% of their excess weight.
The thing about lap band (which my dr and his staff stressed so often, it was like listening to a broken record) is that the band only works for people who work it. Unlike bypass, you can't rely on the body not absorbing the food to create rapid and dramatic weight loss. You have to follow all the rules and make the right choices in order to succeed with the band. Unfortunately, a lot of drs have just as much fat prejudice as the rest of the world, only their prejudice is in believing that fat people aren't willing or able to make the committment to the band. After all, life with the band is like an assisted diet--not the kind of diet that always failed or made us all miserable, but a healthy diet in the sense of a healthy style of lifelong eating and exercise. Since fat people have "clearly failed" at dieting in the past, many bariatric surgeons want to steer us toward bypass because at least some initial weightloss is more of a "sure thing."
Always remember though, that while bypass patients lose more initially, after 3-5 years, the average amount of weight lost between bandsters and bypassers generally equals out. And plenty of people have gained back their bypass weight, too.
Go with what feels right to you. If that's the band, get a second or third opinion from a surgeon who DOES do a lot of banding. Don't get bulldozed into a surgery you aren't 100% comfortable with. Good luck!

Just found out that I have pretty much the whole month of March available for time off at work so I am hoping for a speedy approval. It would be great if I could have the surgery the first Monday in March but I am not holding my breathe. The latest I can have it is the last week of March, otherwise I will have to wait until June do to scheduling at work. That would make me so sad.
Still waiting on my Psych Eval. My surgeon got the results last Tuesday but the lady in the Behavioral Health department for my insurance company claims she hasn't gotten the multiple faxes. HAPPY THOUGHTS is all I got!
