Hi! My surgery is set for Dec. 15th with Dr. Mark Pleatman. Who was your surgeon?

On NYE I ended up in the ER with very bad stomach pain & pain in between my shoulder blades. I was admitted to the hospital and a CT scan was done. I was told the scan was clear but my lab work showed I had pancreatitis. I was sent home the next day on a strict diet. My surgeon was out of the country during my ER visit & had no on call doctor. So when we met a week ago I told him what happened. He looked up the CT scan report & lab work & told me the CT scan shows "fluid collection". He said we need to rule out a leak or an abscess. I had an upper GI done last wed. I was told it came back fine & it's not a leak. I'm still having left shoulder pain on & off!? My surgeon doesn't seem to think it's a leak, he said I would be sicker & running a fever. Don't get me wrong I'm happy it's not a leak but I can't help but suspect it could be because of this damn shoulder pain. I'm not sure what to do???

This is what my CT scan said... "There is a 3.7 x 2.1cm fluid collection to the left of the gastroesophageal junction" I did an upper GI & that came back fine.

It's not horrible pain that I can't take, it'a a nagging on & off pain. Hopefully I'm just a slow healer & it's not a big deal.

I have a 32b too & feel the same way. I feel like something is stuck in my throat. hopefully it will get better.

Thank you. I met with my GP on monday about it. She said it was out of her legue, to talk to the surgeon. My husband called the surgeon today, he has not heard back though. DOS was 12/15/11

No leak!! Wooohoooo!

Well I'm a mix of emotions after my 1mo. post-op appointment. Good news first, I have lost a total of 33lbs so far! Now for the not so good news, I may or may not have a leak or an abcess..... no I will not be billed. My husband spoke with the insurance co. and it's covered.

Things to keep an eye on... low blood pressure & low blood sugar.

I have this issue too! It feels like something is stuck in my throat! what did your doctor say?

DOS 12/15/11 No lie, my husband said I woke up from a sound sleep, sat up in bed & yelled out "bring me a bowl of cheez-its!"

I have the same issue! I met with my surgeon today. He said it is not typical but can happen. I hope it doesn't last long.

I'm thinking the pain could be coming from your spleen. I say this because back in 2008 I had a splenic infarction ( no blood flow to the spleen) I had really bad pain on my upper left side for almost a year, it also causes left shoulder pain as well. Just a thought that your spleen maybe super upset from the surgery & causing pain. Ask your doctor or GP about it. Hope you feel better soon!

I'm having surgery Dec. 15th. I told my best friend of 20+ yrs. about my upcoming WLS surgery She is not supportive at all. She feels that I should be able to cut calories, exercise & lose the weight on my own. She has asked me for yrs. if I eat right & I told her for yrs. I do. Now she is saying I was not forthcoming with her about my eating habits. I tried to explain that I eat pretty healthy BUT I do overeat at times. I also explained being insulin resistant & having high cortisol at times has made it very difficult to lose weight & keep it off. She told me she's not buying it. I either eat bad or have an endocrine issue, it's one or the other. This is only part of our conversation! I felt drilled & judged. I truly understand her worries, I'm worried too! but an hour long phone call drilling me about this choice is a little too much for me to handle right now. I have gone to 4 seminars about WLS I have researched the **** out of it, I have taken the damn high cortisol into consideration when I made this WLS choice but why should I have to defend myself!? it's my choice! I feel like I'm damned if I do I'm damned if I don't! This conversation has turned me off to telling anyone else about my upcoming surgery! The only people I have told is my parents. Any advice would be great. Did you guys tell your friends & family before your WLS?

Thank you all for the awesome replies! long-lifer, your statement really hit home with me. I too "value friendship, family and honesty VERY much" I feel very guilty not talking with my friends & family about my upcoming surgery but unfortunately I have not set up enough boundaries in my relationships so my friends & family often give unsolicited advice. I have been way too passive throughout the yrs. Hopefully with this WL journey I can build more self confidence & find my voice with my friends & family. Thanks again for all the great replies!

My surgeon doesn't require the pre-op liquid diet. He made me lose 5lbs though.
