  1. What?! Good for you for giving it a minute before reacting--that could've gotten ugly
  2. Seraphina--thanks, girly...it's kinda messed up because i never had any intention of teliing everyone i work with, making some big announcement at a staff meeting or anything, i'm just not that tight will all of them. This woman was one of the "chosen few" And i do see the not telling anyone; if i were still at my previous job, i may have gone that way too...anyway, two days post op is so exciting! Can't wait to hear about your progress. Do my thing i shall, right along with you! Thanks again!
  3. Thanks lilmiss--i'm sure i'll be all over the boards getting (and giving) support once i get going!
  4. Thanks for the hugs, sippnsotagirl and sleeve4me
  5. Thanks for the feedback! I have every intention of following the doctor's and nutritionist's plans, so hopefully I will be successful. luv-a-bull, I don't have a date yet, but fingers crossed for january. good luck on the 13th--that's so close!
  6. Thanks for the support, guys--glad I checked in before leaving the office I will just focus on the positive and give her a knowing look when I start to melt before her eyes!
  7. Thanks for putting this all in perspective, Rick. My official weight yesterday at the medical center was 239, so yes, I was thinking the same thing, that 100lbs would put me in the upper range of "normal." I was kind of surprised that he said that to me--maybe I was carrying the weight particularly well that day
  8. ok, so everything went well yesterday, saw the psychologist, dietitian, PA, and a few other people. the dietitian told me that i should start getting 70g of protein now, and though i don't necessarily have to lose before the surgery, i should not be gaining more weight at this point. she helped me come up with a couple of goals for now about eating and exercising--started the eating part today, exercise starts monday after work. now i have to get the official referral from my PCP, wait to be scheduled for a pulmonary function test, which is supposed to only take 10 minutes, and i have an EGD, which is set for 12/21. so hopefully i can be in the january sleevers club!
  9. Well put, babigrl! I can only imagine how much better you felt (even before getting responses) after sending out that letter. I haven't told my parents or brother yet; I'm trying to wait until I have a date, but I'm a little nervous about that conversation. I likely will tell them over the phone, but I may steal some of the points you make here, if that's okay
  10. Sorry for the length of this post--this just happened and I had to get it out: So, I mentioned my plans for WLS to a co worker who has been very supportive of me and kind to me in the past (why I felt ok telling her before I even have a surgery date). But when I said it, her eyes bugged out for about half a second, then she launched into this 5 minute infomercial about some nutritional supplement that she'd given to another person who works in my office and how that person has lost 20 lbs. She told me all about it, and asked something like how soon was I planning the surgery and wouldn't I like to just try this Vitamin for 3 months and see what happens? Um, nope. I've been thinking about this for months, and trying everything under the sun for years--I'm done. I told her that I've already started the process and don't want to wait 3 more months, but she could feel free to send me whatever info she had, or that I could just google it. It was SO awkward (for me, at least)! Then some other people walked over and the conversation sort of faded away. I don't know, it left me with a bad taste in my mouth, I mean, it's not like I just woke up one day 20lbs overweight and decided to have this surgery. I need to lose more like 100. And she did say something about maybe it'd be better if I could lose without their being "stapling of [my] insides" involved. She's about 20 yrs older than me, and maybe it was some maternal reaction on her part, so I get the concern part, but ugh, I just really needed some support (and I also know she's never had a weight problem). I've also shared with another co-worker whom I consider a friend, as well as with my boss, and they've both been awesome, so maybe it's just a fluke, but it's giving me pause about telling other people. And for whatever reason, it's making me want to cry. Ok, thanks for reading all of this
  11. I had many of my pre op appts yesterday, and when the psychologist asked me about a goal, I said I wanted to lose about 100 pounds. He said that I might be being a little too ambitious, and that I would probably only lose about 60 pounds within the first year. But I didn't say I was wanting to lose 100lbs in the first year, that's just my ultimate goal. Am I being too optimistic? Is he just trying not to get my hopes up?
  12. Hi Aboutmethistime! I am self pay, so my process is a little different, but I did an online seminar in mid-October, had my initial appt yesterday, and I have to have 2 other visits (pulmonary function test, and EGD) this month. They told me I will likely have the surgery 6-8 weeks from now, mostly depending on the surgeon's schedule. That's okay with me--worst case scenario, I'll get sleeved around my birthday (2/14). New life, new birth--sounds good! Good luck with all of your appointments--this is going to be great!
  13. wow, that seems fast! exciting and scary at the same time ...well, i guess i'll see what happens tomorrow--updates to come! thanks!
  14. Hi MsBoo--i'm new here myself, though i don't have a surgery date yet. it sounds like a really exciting time for you and hubby--really happy for you! do keep us posted post-op
  15. Hi vf59! good to hear from someone who has had the same doctor(s). i'm headed to bluegrass bariatric tomorrow for the pre op. i was wondering, how soon after you finished all the preliminaries did you have your surgery? i'm hoping that because i'm self pay, i can get it pretty soon.
  16. Hi waterlover, i'm in the US and i have insurance, but it only covers the lapband (and i'd have to gain weight and upgrade my plan to qualify), so i'm self-paying for the sleeve. i'm probably not much help in terms of going to mexico, as i plan to be sleeved here in kentucky. but i just wanted to welcome you to the boards, and i hope you are able to find what you're looking for!
  17. Thanks, Beyon Sleeve! I'll be sure to post afterwards--hope you will too! . Rebecca, i hope you get a date soon!
  18. wow, i feel the same way, and i don't even have a date yet! i've been trying really hard not to buy clothes, while fighting the urge to pack up everything in my closet and take it to the goodwill! i feel so uncomfortable in my clothes, when i'm sure i wasn't as aware of that feeling a couple of months ago...part of me wants to go on a diet, just to show the doctors that i can be disciplined; another part of me feels like what is the point, i might as well eat everything in sight since i'm planning on having the surgery(i guess that's the "food funeral" thing  )...nope, you are definitely not alone.
  19. hi, indi1. i agree with favoredone--if you can find another surgeon you're comfortable with, go for it--in the grand scheme of things, your well-being (and financial situation) are more important than a surgeon you've spoken to one time losing a patient. he'll probably shrug it off, while for you, a lot more is riding on you being able to get it done this year. just my two cents.
  20. The 13th is right around the corner! I hope all goes well, and i look forward to sharing after pics and stories!
  21. i'll be your sleevy friend and i'm sure others will chime in with support too! yay for 2012!
  22. uh-oh--is 40 the minimum? given that it seems like most places make you diet before surgery anyway, i would hope that was okay...
  23. Thanks mnb and copchick! I'll definitely be posting as I move along the journey...copchick--how have your appointments gone so far? Any word on a date?
  24. Hi everyone, This is my first post, though I've been lurking for about a month My pre-op appt is December 1st, and they plan to do everything (labs, nutrition counseling, education, psych) that day. I'm going to be self-pay, and was really surprised to get approved for enough loan $ in a matter of 24 hours. Now that it's coming together, I'm starting to get nervous, but I'm really excited! Anyway, just wanted to officially check in and get involved. Thanks for all your posts so far, it's really been helpful to read so much about others' journeys!
