Tips for a new runner?
I run very slowly since I am bigger. I run between 3.6-3.8 mph and I walk at 3.0 mph. Right now I am working on running 30 minutes then I am going to worry about speed. If you are comfortable and able to do the running workouts with your walking at 3.5mph then that should be a fine pace.

Exercise frequency
Hey I ran 20 minutes straight this weekend and I am only on week 6. Spinning class is a cycling class on a "spinning" bike. Seriously if there is an actual term for it I don't know it lol. It is an upright bike and is a bit sleeker than those used at the gym, and the class is led by the instuctor. You tighen and loosen the gear (flywheel) to simulate going up and down hills and you stand and pedal and have your hands in different positions as if you are racing. Every class I have been to has always been set to music and the speed of the ride matches the speed of the music. Very, very cool class. For first timers i would recommend either a gel seat cover and/or some biking shorts. Those seats can tear the hieny up.

Chickie I am just having PMS issues lol. You know you are my hero right? You and Puddin. I can't wait to have the results that you guys have which makes me trust your judgement in how to lose the weight. I can guarantee I am not the low carb eater and I can eat more than a few bites. To me the point of this band is to be able to eat like a size 6 woman. All of my small friends eat crap sometimes just less of it than I used to eat. But they eat healthy most of the time and that's what I am shooting for. I do drinking protien shakes but as a treat at the end of the day when DH is eating ice cream. It makes me feel like I am having a treat but it is not what I live by. And even if you don't think of yourself as hardcore you are pretty bad ass. The transformation you have had is nothing short of amazing, and you definitely deserve to give yourself credit for that.

Exercise frequency
I workout every day. I walk 6 days a week either 3 or 4 miles depending on who my walking partner is at work. One girl can only get out for an hour so I do 3 miles with her, the other can get 1.5 hours so we do the 4 miles. I usually walk the 3 in 45-50 minutes and the 4 in 1hr 5mins. In addition to that I am doing week 6 of the couch to 5 K running program so that is another 25 minutes (5 warm up and 20 actual workout). I have also gotten into riding my bike recently. I was doing 5 or so miles and now I am doing 11 miles to work and 11 miles home (just started this week). I get sweaty when I walk, I get sweaty when I ride and I love it. And for the record I do think I am pretty hardcore for a 227 pound girl. I push myself harder than I ever have and I cannot wait until some more of this weight comes off and I have less limitations. I want to run faster, I want to run longer. I just don't know how much my legs can take just yet so I am doing it slowly.

The run went pretty well. I made it the whole 20 minutes. My new shoes feel...well, different. I don't know if they don't fit right or if every other pair of shoes I have had did not fit right. I am going to give them a couple more workouts and see. I am also pretty bad with my food. Not as bad as I used to be but bad for a bandster. That is probably why I work out so much. I have to over compinsate for my poor eating. Today I rode my bike to work again and rode it home. But my friggin pedal effing fell off on the way home, maybe like 4 miles into my ride. SO I had to stop, find the bolt, put it back on with my hands and stop every 3 minutes or so to tighten the bolt. Pain in the ass. But I did learn that the trip home is much more downhill than the trip to work. Makes it easy after a day of work. I had an appointment with my Dr. today. Actually the first appointemnt where I did not get a fill lol. The Queen of Fills has finally reached restriction. He said I am doing well and took a look at my stomach. He said I am going to have a hanging pannus so he started the documentation for insurance purposes for plastic surgery. This is just another reason I love that man lol. Not only does he give me the surgery that is changing my life but he is going to help me get the plastics to go along with it. The thought of a flat stomach just makes me want to go running. Did you guys know Slim Fast makes protien bars now? 190 cal, 6 fat, 20 carb, 15 Protein. I know the carbs are a little high but they are really quite a tasty way to get in 15 grams of protein.

Lifetime Fitness Club
Yeah the membership people can be really ushy and annoying because they get paid on commission. As for the PhDs...I don't think so. I knew several of the Personal Trainers when I worked there and they only had to be certified, certainly not PhDs. You can only bring your own children and they require you to bring in their birth certificate for proof (at least at my club). They are so strict on that that they would not allow the partner of a gay man to drop of his kids because they were not his own and they could not be legally married (step parent is okay). Of course I didn't follow that rule because I was pissed about it and thought it to be ridiculous and discirminatory in that situation. As for the 15 year old she would need a guest pass or pay the guest fee to get in.

KEVORKIAN to be freed June 1 07!!!!!
Bubble I am not trying to argue I was just trying to say that there is a possibility that not everyone was terminal. Yes maybe there are just rumors and maybe they are true. It doesn't make a difference for me really as I completely agree with what Dr. K did for those people who were terminally ill and in horrible pain. As for the source all you can really find on the guy are people opinions one way or another. But if you google Rebecca Badger it says that her autopsy showed no sign of MS. There were many articles on that. Maybe she was in pain or maybe she was depressed or hell maybe she just wanted some attention.

KEVORKIAN to be freed June 1 07!!!!!
I probably should have inlcuded a disclaimer of I remember hearing about blah blah blah. Or worded myself differently lol. Since I live near Detroit Dr. K was obviously all over the news constantly back then. Hearing something doesn't make it true and it has been a long time since the trials and such. Here is link from the Detoit Free Press with some onfo on people. Though these people may have had conditions they may not have been deemed terminal at the time of their death. The info on them is at the end of the article. 1996: Kevorkian charged again

Has anyone taken up Bycyling?
I think I could have made it home but I was in a hurry because I had a lot of things to do so I had DH pick me up. Honestly I feel great. I am not tired or anything. I even managed to do some running this afternoon (20 minutes straight for the first time ever). I am thinking that for every day I ride my bike to work I am going to put away the same amount of gas money the trip would have cost me and at the end of the summer buy myself something nice. Like maybe a bodybugg. Man I really want one of those things.

Feb Bandsters June Challenge
I was shocked that I made it to work. I kept saying to myself to just make it to the next street and once I got there I would tell myself to go the next one. Actually the first 3 miles were harder than the last 3. I wanted to give up a mile from my house but I said screw it I am jsut going to go. I want a bodybugg or actitrainer so bad too. I just can't afford it.

would you or would you not do it again?
In a heart beat. These last 4 months I have become so active and not exhausted all the time and it is just leaking into every aspect of my life. It is the single best life changing decision I have ever made in my life.

Jealousy
My Aunt was on the phone with my cousin (who is also very overweight) talking about how good I was looking and how I had surgery. My cousin proceeded to say "Yeah because she couldn't do it the old-fashioned way" my Aunt told her that maybe she (my cousin) should try a new way since obviously the old fashioned way wasn't working for her either. One of my favorite quotes is "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results".

KEVORKIAN to be freed June 1 07!!!!!
It's all good. I respect yours also. I am pretty much a "to each his own" kind of person. I try to mind my own business and really don't care too much about what other people do (obviously within reasons of the law). My friends consider me a "liberal repbulican" which I think are few and far between. lol I hate to have to bring this up because I do agree with what Dr. K did for those who needed it. It was found out after the fact that there were a few of his patients that were extremly depressed but autopsies showed they were not terminally ill. They were just severly depressed and wanted to end it all. I guess the biggest question would be did these people come to Dr. K and lie to him about being ill or did Dr. K lie about them being ill. While I do not agree with him helping depressed people to off themselves I definitely agree with his helping those terminally ill patients who were ready to go.

Intimacy
I am glad to be able to read this thread and see the responses from the other side of the fence. I have a bit of the opposite problem than you guys do . My DH wants it all the time and I just don't. For him intimacy=sex. For me intimacy is much more than sex. It is being so close to someone that you can finish their sentences. It is being in the same room with them and even if you are not talking still feel perfectly content because you are in the presence of the person you love. It is doing the little things that really aren't a big deal but you know will make the other person smile. Sex is going to be less and less frequent as we get older and if that is all we have for intimacy what is that going to say about our relationship when we are 60,65,70? I never wanted to have sex. Now I am realizing a lot of that had to do with my weight as my libido is increasing. But at the same time I never realized what a damaging effect it had on him when I would turn him away. How he never really believed it was not his fault. How it made him feel like I was being distant and cold. Once we had "the talk" about it I started to understand how he, like many of you, was feeling. And even before I started losing weight I began to put out. I had no desire to do so but I knew that I had to be unselfish and do it for him. Because I love him. Because he was willing to stay with me even if we did not have sex for months and he was miserable.

LB surgery for my unhappy tean daughter?
I am sorry reqgoddess but I have to disagree with you on the genetics. I cannot believe genetics does not play a part when I spent my entire high school career playing sports year round, spent my summers outside and still ended up fat and the most exercise my then best friend had was lifting the forkfull of mac and cheese to her mouth and was skinny as a bean pole. She must have been eating a good 4000 calories daily and never gained weight. She never exercised, ever. Genetics can be overcome with diet and exercise but they do play some part in how hard you have to work for it.

Feb Bandsters June Challenge
I don't know if it is the running, I don't know if it is the weight loss, I don't know if it is the fact that I seem to just be pushing myself more than I ever have before, but you know what? I rode my bike 11.2 miles to work today!!!!!! I don't feel like I am going to die though I am going to have DH pick me up. I am on some sort of exercise high right now, I can't even explain it. Wow.

Has anyone taken up Bycyling?
Holy crap I freaking did it. I am sitting in my offivce typing this and staring at my bike. I made it the 11.2 miles to work!!! It took me about an hour and 40 minutes but that included a 10 minute Water break. So 1.5 hours for 12 miles not too shabby. Especially since the longest I have ever riden in one stretch is 6 miles. I think I am going to have DH pick me up though.

Great Job Travelgirl. Zannie, Sorry about your crappy weather. We dealt with a little bit today. Of course it hit right smack in the middle of our walk at work. Luckily it did not rain too long and scrubs dry really fast lol.

In the dust nothing. You are only 3 pounds behind me. And maybe not anymore. We had a potluck and I ate like a pig. I am feeling like death right now!!!! I just may have gained all three pounds back.
