Why did you choose a midband?

Recommended Posts

I spoke to dr. verboonen Today, he asked me what kind of band I want; and gave me an explanation of the 3, I asked him which one he though was better, he recommended the midband.

Since all the research I have done previously was about the lap band, it would be a great help if anyone who has a midband can share with me the reasons for their decision, and any link wold be appreciated too.

Thank you!:D

Hi

I dont really know about the midband, but I seen your ticker...are you only 75kgs/165lbs?

If so, how tall are you if you dont mind me asking.

I hope all goes well for your op, and see you on the other side.

Thank you Kell, I am really small :D 1.50m I think thats almost 5 ft. my BMI is 34 or 35 this days, but it has been a lot higher at some points in my life (91kg), I have been a yo-yo dieter all my life, I am hoping the band will help me to keep a healthy weight, I eat healthy and exercise everyday, my problem is that I am always hungry and can eat a whole cow by myself.

I did not go with the mid band since it was not approved in the US when I had surgery and even though I go back to Dr. Ortiz for my aftercare, I wanted the Inamed band in the event of an emergency since many U.S. docs will not give aftercare with a midband. Ask questions, go to the Yahoo boards Mexicanbandsters as well

Here are a few links on the subject..

If you go to Mexicanbandsters in yahoo groups and do a search you will find good and bad info on Dr. verboonen.

Here is another one to read..

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/mexicanbandsters/message/13935

The mai nthing is that you are 100% satisfied with your choice of your Dr...if you are 100% satisfied after all your research then go for it!

Best of luck to you..

As I understand the 3 most used bands are

Lap band by inamed (American)

Midband by lowate ab (French)

Swiss band by Johnson and Johnson

There is also a German band, but is not so common.

Most Americans prefer the lap band since is the only one approved in USA.

But I live in Mexico so my doctor said the midband would be the best choice because is more flexible and has better stats.

but I cant find much information about it.

I got a letter today from the makers of the midband and it explains the advantages of the midband I will paste it here in blue:

"Hello,

We thank you for visiting our website www.midband.fr, we know Dr verboonen very well, he's an excellent surgeon with very good experience in our adjustable gastric band.

The MIDBAND is an adjustable gastric band made in silicone and it is implantable by coelioscopy. One of the biggest differences between the MIDBAND and other gastric bands is that the MIDBAND is extremely flexible. It has no sharp surfaces which could contribute to erosion of the gastric wall<O:p</O:p

The first MIDBAND was implanted on August 2nd <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com><st1:metricconverter w:st=2000, in</st1:metricconverter> <ST1:pLyon</ST1:p by Dr FRERING and to date approximately 16 000 MIDBANDS have been implanted in the world with excellent outcomes.

We hope we answer your question, if you need further information, do not hesitate to contact us ,

Best Regards,

hi

I have one of the bigger bands. As far as I can see,if you are very small you might have problems with restriction if they put one of the bigger bands (that takes up to 9 or 11mls...)They often have to be filled to capacity and beyond for small people to get propper restriction. That is only one of the negatives of it.Positive that I know of is it is softer and shapes better around the stomach and is said to cause less erosion....but that still remains to be seen as the bigger bands have only recently become popular....

Just my 2 cents......

Somebody answer the same question in smartbandsters, I will paste the post here because the links are very useful and inspirational!!!!

Hi Carmen,

There is a discussion about the possible benefits of the MIDband on my

website:

http://www.kinderwishes.com/WLS/index.html

I have yet to finish the darn thing, but at least *that* page works!

I chose the MIDband because that is what my surgeon uses now, exclusively-

he started with the Swedish, then the Lapband. I chose my surgeon based on

his complication rate, which was the lowest of any surgeon I contacted

(and I contacted doctors all around the world - it was a while ago), less

than 1% (including slippage, erosion, and removal for other reasons).

I don't know if Dr. Frering's low complication rate is because of his

skill, the MIDband, or a combination of both - and honestly, we will probably

not know for many years... although Medical Innovation Development (MID) is working on starting FDA trials, you know how long that takes. So until

thousands of people all around the world have had their MIDbands for a

long time and somebody does a decent study, it's basically guesswork -

although I do believe the MIDband has some great things to recommend it.

BUT- the most important thing is follow-up care. If you can get

follow-up for a non-FDA approved band where you live, there's no reason not to get a MIDband. If your post-op care is contingent on having an Inamed band, however, then that's what you should get. I am fortunate to live in the

Pacific Northwest, where there are many options, so I was able to

choose the surgeon I wanted.Let me know if I can answer any other questions, and you might also want to join the FrenchMidBandsters Yahoo group:

Wondering if you made your decision on which band yet, and if your doc is charging less for the MID vs the LAP (Inamed) Band? Very interested in hearing your thoughts.

How are you doing with your midband now that you've had it a while? Were you able to find local aftercare?

Hi

I did a lot of research into the different types of bands and chose the MIDband as it had the highest EWL figures and the lowest complication rates.

Here is a study showing the complication rates.

Gastric Banding improvement in results : a single centre study of 4019 patients.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

V. FRERING, <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on">E. FONTAUMARD</st1:place>, P. VICARD, Y. MATUSSIERE, S. BATES<o:p></o:p>

Clinique de la Sauvegarde, 25, Av des Sources, 69009 LYON France<o:p></o:p>

Background: Gastric banding is recognised as a safe procedure for the control of obesity. From the outset many improvements have been suggested including different bands and methods of placement.<o:p></o:p>

Methods.<o:p></o:p>

From 1997 to February 2004 4019 gastric bands were placed by the same surgeon. Mean BMI was 44,8 Kg/m2. Historically 3 bands were used : LAPband (n=868), SAGB(n=1386) and MIDband(n=967). Perigastric and pars flaccida approach were both used. Stomach to stomach sutures were not always used. <o:p></o:p>

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
