Drinking water during and after meals...

Recommended Posts

How do any of you do this? As thirsty as I am it only took ONE TIME, to make that mistake!!!!! there is no way anyone can drink I mean doesn't it come back up for anyone at all? Also it's hurt really bad even like 30 minutes afterwards there was no liquid of any sort going down my throat!!!!!

So when they say don't drink while you eat how is that even possible!??!?!?

I do make the mistake from time to time. Today I was eating something I wasn't supposed to be eating and had a small gulp of Water and I choked everything up. This was totally my fault because I was doing wrong on all levels. Just be careful not to drink at least 30 minutes before a meal, during a meal, and at least 30 minutes after. At least for me that works, when I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing.

I've never had anything come up, food or Water. When I didn't have good restriction in the very beginning, I could drink and eat with no problem. But I stopped doing that. Now I have good restrictiona and it's painful if I have a drink. I have to wait at least 30 min after eating. But sometimes if I'm eating something really HOT I have to sip sometimes! lol

i take sips - not gulping my drinks.

my dr doesn't restrict this - and i've not had a single episode that many speak to; again i take a few sips here & there during a meal of wine or Water.

I'm like luluc, too. Although, I choose to not drink during meals at home, when we go out I'll drink small sips of my Water, tea (up to 1/2 a small glass) or a small glass of wine (my doctor said an occasional small glass of wine is fine, and I've only ordered wine twice since banding, because I hate to drink calories).

If push comes to shove, my doctor said, in a support group meeting, that a small amount of water is okay..he's talking like a medicine cup full. Personally, I drink so much when I'm permitted (1/2 hour prior and 45 mins after, I generally don't get thirsty during a meal).

I truly do believe that not drinking keeps my food in my upper stomach longer, so I might drink that small amount with a meal once or twice a week tops. On the other hand, I have no pain with drinking, but maybe it's because it's such a small amount and I'm sipping, or maybe it's just one of those weird band things.

Your best bet is to follow your doctor's orders.

My doctor prefers us to drink right up to the point we start consuming food. She believes it makes a feel more full. Once we start consuming food, my doctor does not want us to drink for 1-hour.

It is a hard rule, but I don't keep liquids near me when I am eating. I pay attention when I am eating, not distracted by tv, radio, phone, or computer.

Its very hard for me. I always used to have at least 3 glasses of water/tea whatever when eating, but I do have a few sips before I begin to eat and maybe 1 tiny sip during the meal and after. My doc approves and nothing has ever come back up. I miss my liquids, but love how my band is working. You can do it.......its just takes making a habit of it and gettn your mind around it.

I think it all depends on your restriction level. With tight restriction, any fluids will almost instantly cause me to pb or just be very, very uncomfortable. Right now with an unfilled band I can eat and drink together without issue.

I have a terriable habit of drinking while I eat. For me it makes the food go down SO MUCH easier. When I feel uncomfortable, like food is getting a little stuck, i just drink some Water and it goes right down. When I don't drink with my meals I eat about 60% less. I really need to get back on track with that.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
