Medifast -- AFTER surgery? (long post)

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone,

I know there are quite a few folks that get put on Medifast for thier pre-op portion of the journey -- but has anyone attempted Medifast post op?

The reason this is coming up for me is because I sought the advice of a personal life coach to help get me through the mental side of weight loss. Without going in to my whole history in this post, I felt the coach would be an appropriate place to go because I have some ingrained habits that ultimately have lead to me gaining weight, getting abused, ect... and since it is all the same issue I decided to go the coaching route instead of the counseling route.

One of the recomendations the coach made was to consider Medifast for a month or two post-op to help take the mental anguish off of me surrounding making food choices... long enough that will allow me to heal, and get a good chunk of weight off, and make significant changes to my behavior.

I had looked at Medifast before considering the lap band and decided it wasn't for me... but now that it has been brought up as an option post surgery I am starting to look at it in another light. She is not just a coach, but a doctor (albiet, not a baratric surgeon) -- so I am not completely ruling out this option -- though I'm guessing there are few people who would be supportive or have gone this route.

Before I get the standard "you shouldnt be drinking your meals with the lap band" I wanted to say that I understand that... And... I also understand that I need to learn to eat with my band (this is for life)-- and that is super important to me. I want to know how to choose appropriate food and I want to know how to cook food and plan meals... ect. I also know I have 200 pounds to lose, and if doing Medifast with the band for a month or two could give me enough time to make significant progress in reprograming some behavior patterns I chose as a kid, I think it might be worth it.

The medifast meals aren't just shakes... they've got pudding and scrambled eggs and Soup... so it looks like the portion size would be small and similar to the stuff I would be consuming on my own (eggs/omlets for Breakfast, a soup/stew for lunch, and lean protien/veggies for dinner... ).

Has anyone done this?

Hi!

I know what you are saying about this. I am going in for my surgery sept 9. Now I didn't need to do any weightloss before hand.

However, I have used medifast before.

From everything that my nutritionist and surgeon are telling me, the first month is the most critical for healing and the month with the least amount of "real cooked food"

Meaning, the first week after the surgery, I will be on liquids only

the second week, pureed foods

third week, softer foods

fourth week and on, introducing more solid foods

So, a friend of mine who had the lb done said the medifast is perfect for this. because there are broths and the shakes, and are very nutritious, they are good for the first 2 weeks at least, than you can add the eggs, pudding, etc....

But my only downside to when i used medifast is this, once i got off of it, i gained my weight back because i didn't learn my new tools, i relied too much on the "already prepared" and "just open and go" of the diet.

So, all in all, it is good the first month, but just still really try and learn on your own what to do for life.

We will get through this!

Good luck and keep in touch!

I am here for ya!

Michaele

My brother and his wife both used medifast to lose weight and the moment they stopped using it, they gained it all back. It was TOO easy, IYKWIM.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
