May Exercise Challenge

Happy May Everyone!

Time for a new exercise challenge thread. This thread is open to anyone -- you don't have to be an August 07 bandster to join us.

I have two personal goals for May. Number one is to finally join the rest of you "speedy banditos" in the 100 pound club. I am only 5 pounds away, which means that if I don't make it, something is definitely wrong. That said, the pounds are coming off much more slowly nowadays, so I will need to work hard and stay very focused.

This brings me to goal number 2, which is to start running this month. I bought myself a comfortable pair of running shoes while I was in Miami, and will begin the Couch to 5K running schedule in the next few days.

I don't see myself ever running a marathon (I have too many other interests to distract me from doing that much training), but perhaps at some point I will do a shorter race. Also there is always the 8 Tuff Miles on St. John, which I plan to participate in next year.

Good luck with your goals, and have a happy and healthy month!!!!

Hey Salsa,

Sounds like you did a great job. I don't think you can push yourself too hard if you are not exercising in the proper conditions. You were right to listen to your body.

I did session two of week two of the Couch to 5K running plan today.

Have a great night everyone!

You people rock! I'm super impressed with everyone's work this month. Reaching Onderland, training for marathons, couch to 5K, trikking, hiking. Wow, ya'll are awesome.

I did my hour of cardio this morning and now I'm headed out for a couple of hours of work in the garden. Later I'm going to meet "losingjusme" for coffee. Turns out that we live just a couple of miles from each other. I've followed her story for months so its going to be fun to meet her.

Have a great day everybody!

I was trying to get in a 6 mile walk today, but the sun went down and hubby came and forced me to get in the car because it was too dark. So I did 4.5 miles. Tomorrow morning we are heading down to the canyon to do the 12 miler that I didn't finish on Thursday. We are doing it early though so hopefully the heat will not knock me out and DH will be down there with water so that I don't get dehydrated! Planning ahead this time!

Salsa, you are doing such a great job, but thank goodness you have some reasonable people around you (DH) who will tell you when it is time to quit. Don't take unnecessary risk like being out running in the dark! And like Frangi said, be sure to listen to your body. The last thing you want right now is to injure yourself in any way. I only scold you because I love you, lol. Ok, that is it for my motherly lecture.

I met LJM for coffee yesterday and at the park this morning for a cardio workout. She is just as nice a person as you could imagine. She is also, as you would imagine, very inspiring; just one of those shining examples of what we can do when we put our minds to it.

I did weight training this morning too.

HOLY COW (or cats!) I did it. :leaving: I ran 7, walked 1, ran 2, walked 1.3, ran .7. I can't believe how far I have come. I am sooooo proud of myself. And I am proud that I can say that I am proud of myself. I have only ever been able to say that one other time in my life and that is when I graduated from college the first time!

My DH is the greatest. He was out there giving me Water at every mile. He had his bike and would ride to the "check points" and stand there with water and cheer me on...it was so great... He really does look out for me. Sometimes I get so focused that I don't think about things...that is what he is there for!

So I have not analyzed the run with my Nike+ running system yet but I will post it on my blog so if you want to check that out you can. LJM introduced me to the nike+ and it is really cool. At the end I got a message from Lance Armstrong congratulating me on my longest run yet. You can push a button on your ipod and it goes to your power song to help give you a boost. It counts your miles and averages your speed. It also calculates your calories based on speed and weight. Today it said that I burned 1392 calories. :w00t:That is right on with what the treadmill says...just a little over 100 calories per mile!

Today is a free food day for me. Why you ask...because on Friday I weighed 152 and thought it was a fluke. When I weighed in yesterday 153, but I ate RIGHT before I went to bed. This morning back down to 152. I can't go any lower. And on days like today when I have already burned 1392 calories before 10AM I figure I can't have any FF or LF stuff. I am not going hog wild and sitting down with ice cream (cause that would have me spending the entire day in the bathroom) or candy, fast food, chips, or crap like that. It just means that we are bbq'ing hamburgers tonight and I am actually going to have ground beef. I am even going to put mayo on it...though that will have to be light mayo because that is all we have. I don't know what we are having for lunch, but I am sure DH will make sure that it is reasonable but higher calories than I would normally eat. I don't want to get to the point that I have to put weight ON, so I just have to have these days when I do the long miles. I guess you could say this is a bonus to maintaining (though it makes me nervous!)

Well I hope everyone has a splendid Sunday. I need to do my cooking for the week...once I sit for a while...my legs are sore...wonder why?!?!:sneaky:

Wow, Salsa, that's fantastic!! Congratulations -- you're ready for your half-marathon now. Woohoo!!

And yay for "lead-less legs" moments. :leaving: On my last Couch-to-5k workout, which was on the treadmill, I was really happy with how good it felt.

Unfortunately I'm unable to exercise right now. I don't know what the problem is yet... constipation taken to the extreme perhaps? My lower back started hurting on the right side a couple of days ago... a dull ache. Not up where my back hurts when I haul my kids around too much, but lower, like at the top of my rear. Yesterday it went from dull ache on one side to full pain on both sides w/mild nausea; I caved and took a couple Aleve to take the edge off.

This morning I woke to full blown puking (dry heaves) nausea and exruciating pain in my lower back (top of rear). I really need to p**p but nothing comes out and I'm wondering if the pain is caused by stuck poop? So I took some benefiber and some ex-lax several hours ago, and I'm trying to up my fluids. If nothing happens by bedtime I'll be taking more drastic measures. Anyone else have anything like this? I can barely walk at a bent over shuffle let alone run, so no Couch-to-5k workout til whatever this is is gone. And if I don't feel better tomorrow it's definitely off to the doctor!

I think you may have kidney stones. I have had them 10 times and I can spot the signs anywhere. If it is only on one side then that is my bet. Have you gone pee today? Was it painful. The only way to get rid of them is to wait it out...but do it in a hospital where they can give you good drugs.

Thanks Molly :leaving:!

As for the other thing, that doesn't sound good at all -- I would definitely go see a Dr., and I hope the problem clears up soon!

I've been having pain the past few days too, but it's more of a dull ache in my hips and lower back. I think my problem is due to the bone jarring motions of jogging, which my body is still adjusting to, and which I've been doing outside on a hard-surface track. I plan to lay off of it until Wednesday to see if it takes care of the problem.

I actually had to take two Tylenol before I headed out for my Couch to 5K session this evening, and even then I had some pain -- but my pain is really not bad enough for me to bother seeing the Dr.

Great job Salsa! It sounds like you have found something that you really love doing:thumbup:!

Molly,

Sounds like you may be impacted if not kidney stones. The doctor is the best bet for you if you don't go to the bathroom. It will only get worse.

Eek Karri -- Kidney stones? That's actually entirely possible as I had a UTI just last week (or what I thought was one -- doc gave me a round of antibiotics, which took care of the symptoms but now they are back).

I guess I will make an appt tomorrow. I'm glad they have tests to rule this sort of thing out. (or in!)

Molly, I hope you're feeling better today. Let us know.

Great job Salsa. You are inspiring a lot of people who never imagined being able to run a marathon.

I did my hour of cardio this morning.
