Hypothyroid- does that affect approval

Recommended Posts

I am just beginning this journey and am wondering if being hypothyroid can affect whether or not you can be a candidate for surgery?

Thanks, Cindy T

I had a complete thryoidectomy about 12 years ago... I think that probably helped me because, in all my paperwork, one of the things mentioned is they have to go through all the thyroid junk first to make sure you don't have a problem w/ that causing weight gain... so I got to skip that part, I guess.

I found out I had hypothyroidism about a month after my first consult. It didn't seem to affect my approval. It was really nice when I started the thyroid meds and lost like 15 lbs and ate whatever I wanted. Then I gained some of it back.

Anyway, it shouldn't affect your approval. May even help.

I am hypo too... and it didn't hold me back at all. HOWEVER.... a friend of mine is going through the hoops of pre op and her PCP is giving her crap because they think she's hypo, even though she's had a blood test and an ultrasound on her thyroid, both of which were negative. Not sure how they have come to that, since everything is negative.

My doc had no problems at all with it... she's the one that recommended it!

Hi all. My question is how do you know your hypothyroid besides a blood test? Are there any symptoms specific to this? the reason I ask is because I need to lose 13lbs before I can have the surgery and its just not coming off. I've been so bummed that I haven't even got on the scales. I've done Clear Liquids for 2 days no result, Protein Drinks and still no results. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I never knew what a thyroid did, until mine quit working. When I started exhibiting symptoms, I thought I had arthritis. The first doctor who saw me, diagnosed me wrong, but the second doctor knew just by the symptoms I had. I blood test confirmed it.

My symptoms were:

  1. hair loss, clumps of hair falling out
  2. Severely tired (I could not get out of bed)
  3. Joint pain and overall body aches
  4. Weight gain (60 pounds in about 40 days)

I have hypothyroidism for the last 25 years and have been on medication. I had no problem being approved

and my weight loss seems to be on average.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
