In the digestive system, mucus is used as a lubricant for materials which must pass over membranes, e.g., food passing down the esophagus.

Those banded w/ restriction, the first few bites go down into the pouch. But if you keep eating, the other bites hang out in the esophagus longer, causing a build up of this mucus aka slime.

It now will either carry it down to the pouch or expell it.
