For those who have been banded in Belgium can I just ask, is the payment for the op all we have to pay or is there a charge for the pre and post op consultations also?

If so, how much?

Cheers.

Hello Helen,

I have not had any complications with my surgery :)

I stayed in the Eurovalley Hotel - It is very basic but clean and most importantly the Staff were wonderful. They also have a very long corridor that you can pace to get rid of that wind you get in your shoulder.

My aftercare with Dr De Bruyne has been great. I found my transition with the band to be a bit more difficult than I expected. I thought weight loss would be easy but infact you really have to work at it. I have 6.25cc of restriction in a 10 cc band . . . . Dr De Bruyne really does look after his patients and is a firm man - he knows about the ristriction levels and gives very good advice. The price for his fills is now £80 very resonable.

I have lost 3 stone so far... It is not amazing but my fault and is better than putting it on.

With the weather here I am doing more exercise and sticking to a low carb diet.

I wish you all the best with your new adventure.:)

Hi and thanks for your message.

What made you go to Bussels to have this done? Was it purely the price of the surgery? Also how long after you came home did you go to see him for a check up and how often did you go back to see him? Was it in London?

Sorry to keep buggin you with all these questions:confused2:

Yes it is much Cheaper there and I felt doing research that Dr De Bruyne was a reputable Surgeon - He was honest with my mother telling her that she was not suitable for surgery. I am not sure how many other surgeons would of turned down thousands. He has a zero fatality rate which also gave me confidence and his sister had the surgery. So he does care about fat people.

He will give you 4 weeks between fills and you are allowed double fills for the first two. yay :smile2:. I never did have those preferring to let my body adjust to the surgery. Glad I did but everyone is different. Yes He is in London a bit far for me and I have only got finances for four fills a year it is a £150 a go for me and my family including petrol..... So I am saving my last fill for the year at Christmas....

I hope this has helped you and don't worry about the questions - Goodluck and Godbless

It's great to hear that many of you have had positive experiences with Dr De Bruyne. I am scheduled for my op with him in the next few weeks but I have a few concerns over the pre-op diet that I thought someone over here might be able to advise me on as I don't want to bug him with questions at this stage. I was basically told to go on a low fat diet but I'm not sure whether I should be counting calories too? At the minute, I am just making sure the fat is low but not really worrying about totally cutting down on carbs. For example, today I had:

Breakfast: Shape yoghurt (fat free, approx 40 cals)

Lunch: Lentil stew with chicken breast and a small portion of rice (all cooked without a drop of oil) (650 cals?)

Dinner: Vegetable broth with a few vermicelli inside (20 cals?)

Snacks/drinks: Water, one glass diet fizzy drink, 2 nectarines, another shape yoghurt, one packet of wotsits crisps and half a wagon wheel (i know that's awful :S), (approx 350cals)

Total cals: approx 1100)

Is this generally what you all had or should I be cutting down more? If I'm honest, I'm feeling pretty hungry throughout the day so I really am trying. I have read about milk-only and Optifast pre-op diets and all that is making me worried I'm not doing enough...I don't want to increase the risk of complications because I ate too much pre-op and my liver hadn't shrunk enough.

Would really appreciate some advice, I can take harsh criticism too...

I was just banded a week ago in Brussels.

Remember every doctor has different advice about pre-op diets....go with the doctor that will operate on you.

Low fat means just that. Do not be concerned about calories. Also do not be afraid to email him. He will answer.

The night before my surgery he told me to go out and have a nice dinner with a glass of wine!

FWIW I had the same worries you did before the surgery. It is normal. You crossed the hardest step IMO and that was making the contact with Dr. Chris and setting the date.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
