Gastroparesis after rny

Recommended Posts

I had RNY in 2015. I had great results - i started at 254 and had been holding steady at around 128 . I was very pleased where I was. Last fall, I became very ill, not holding anything down. I dropped to 117 and was in and out of hospital and they couldn’t find anything wrong with me. I called my RNY surgeon and asked her to look through my recent test results to see if she could find something other doctors were missing. She said all test looked good, but, suggested i see a digestive disorder specialist who they share a clinic with. I saw the digestive disorder dr and through some test, found that I had a bought with gastroparesis. Finally, a diagnosis and because of diagnosis, they were able to begin treatment. They have some meds that worked and i was, finally, able to start holding food down. As I started holding food down, I started rapidly gaining weight. So, the 10- 12 pounds I lost from being sick was gained back in less than a week. A little startling, but, figure it must’ve been Water weight and I’m right back to the weight I started at. But, I continued to gain and gain. In 2 months, I gained atleast 30 pounds. I’m afraid to get on scale to see exactly how much I gained. But, I did stop gaining and have been holding steady for about 2 months. But, I am very unhappy at the weight I’ve gained. I hardly have any clothes that fit me now and I don’t want to buy new ones because I don’t wasn’t to be this weight. So, my question pertains to gastroparesis AFTER RNY. I know Rny is recommended to treat gastroparesis, but, has anyone heard of it after Rny - I never had any symptoms of gastroparesis in my life. Then with the rapid weight gain. Do you think it’s possible that all the vomiting I did, stretched my stomach or the food sitting in my stomach stretched it or some other side affects? I just don’t know what to think. I do know that I can eat a lot more than I had before the gastroparesis. I can’t make an appointment with my surgeon until all this coronavirus stuff passes since this is not life sustaining, at this point. Any feedback would be appreciated. I am afraid I’m falling into depression over this weight gain. I’m very unhappy and embarrassed.

what kind of meds did they have you on? If steroids, they can make people gain weight, too.

No steroids. I don’t take steroids or nsaids since my Rny. They had me on Reglan and Protonix. I haven’t taken either in about 2 months..

Protonix won't do it - but I just looked up Reglan since I wasn't sure. Yep - that could be a culprit

Well, that sucks, lol! How am I going to get this weight off. I hate it!!!ive cut back on what I had been eating and was going to start back to the gym (I hadn’t been to the gym since i got sick, I really didn’t have the strength or stamina). But, now, this pandemic happened, so no gym. There’s nowhere to walk around in my neighborhood. Plus, I work in a civil 19 essential business and I have been working so many extra hours that I am exhausted when i get home - too tired to try and exercise. What a predicament, lol. I know, I’m happy to be alive and have my health - I’m just whining a little. Thanks for the info!

I am almost 8 weeks post op and I am down to 157 from 202. I have been struggling with nausea but not vomiting. Anyone else having this happen?

After having horrendous nausea I did some reading and it seems quite common. Especially if you have ruled out eating too fast/too big a mouthful. Also drinking too soon will make you feel sick. I now take 2 antiemetics to help with my nausea, hopefully yours is just that you need to slow down eating etc

agree with the above. start a log of what and when you eat/drink

Thank you. I get the nausea throughout the day and night its kind of weird.

Officially no longer over weight! Goal #1 reached! I'm now under 80kgs (176 lbs) at 179cm (5'10") and 10 months post-op and am over the moon. My weight at 79.9 kgs (176 lbs) gives me a BMI of 24.9 which means that I have a normal weight! OMG.
I still want to lose about 16 lbs more though in order to get safely into the middle range to insure against that little regain that happens. The I have maintenence in front of me as well.
BUT I have hit my first goal. Yeah me!!!

I had my gastric sleeve done September 10, 2020... I started out 330# before surgery.... I'm down to 260# now... I've been stalled out for over two months now.... I exercise when I can (Bad back/knees)... I follow my diet , get my protein and drink my water... But still not losing any weight... I've done everything I can think of to break the stall.... Even went back to liquid diet....  Sometimes I think this was a mistake having the surgery...

sorry to hear that don't feel down. Maybe a reset meaning something new. I am in the process of having the surgery a second time. I had Lapland in 2012 removed in 2018 and I have gained everything back and some. When I stalled on lapband I had to do something new for me I joined a free boot camp and Zumba and then boom dropped 38 pounds in 2 months. I know you said bad back and knees so find something with your limits. But I think try something new I stalled for 8 months
