Hi lass, sounds pretty different than here, below is for us in Glasgow

1. Referral to weight management by GP which takes 6-10 weeks.

2. Interview at WM and then another 1-4 month wait for opening in new group

3. Bi weekly class for 12 weeks.

If you lose more than 11.5lbs they discharge you.

4. Phase 2 is monthly meetings for 4 months. Again 11lb rule applies.

5. Repeat phase 2 with Orlistat.

6. If not lost 11.5lbs over the above phases then continue onto surgical route

7. Surgical route takes upwards of 6 months and you can be discharged for failing to lose weight or sabotage.

8. Two week preop diet, if weight loss then referral to surgeon sent - repeat if not.

9. 4 classes held over 8 weeks for assessment and shrink etc.

During this time surgeon appointment happens.

Surgeon can agree or discharge you if unsuitable.

If you leave service then 18 months must pass before GP can refer you again.

Even harder now as up here if your not diabetic it's zero surgery on NHS for new groups and from what I'm hearing England is going to start treating it like up here due to PCT funding.

Hi, I am seeing the nhs consultant tomorrow after a very long road to get here. I was on a weightloss program for 6 months which failed so they sent me to the more intense one in preparation for the sleeve. I have managed to lose the 5% they require but I am also worried that by losing it, I will no longer qualify!

I am just scared I will stuff it up somehow by answering his questions with the wrong answers!

I really need this surgery, am extremely overweight and unable to lose it any other way. Can anyone advise if they have gone through the same thing and what actually happens in the interview?

Alison, lemme tell you my journey

This is my 10th anniversary of weight management and I'm now thankfully 13 days from surgery. Not been easy, down right pain in ass sometimes but here it is.

WM starts off with interview and then wait until placement in group for a 12 class programme every 2 weeks. If we lose 11lbs we are out

If we don't loose that then we go into another stage which is once a month for 4 sessions. If we lose the 11lbs over this we are out.

Next stage if not lost the weight is pharma stage of above but on Orlistat - yup - 11lb rule still applies.

I'm allergic to a ingredient in it so I had medical permission to skip.

Surgery classes are over 3 months at 2 week intervals, weigh ins and classes about surgery pathway, healthy eating etc.

During this stage you will get a psychiatrist appointment - do not panic, just be honest. They will red flag you if they suspect your hiding issues.

You will then get a surgeons appointment, THEY have the final say about what happens.

Surgery normally takes place within 18 weeks of meeting surgeon.

The 5kg rule can trip you up, if your at Max weight loss then they may discharge you but again depends on your programme.

Interview, is it the NUT or psych one?

Hi, I am in Yorkshire near Leeds. My journey has been, 12 weeks with a group, learnt nothing that I didn't already know, lost nothing. Referred for surgery but that wasn't that important to them as they moved me to another 12 week class which was more intense, with people who had weight issues but not necessarily seeking surgery.

I had to lose 5% which I did and then had to go back once a month to get weighed. If I was still at 5% loss at that stage, she put me forward to see someone else, a lady at the hospital but in the weightloss department, don't think it was the dietician.

After she weighed me again, she said I would then be put forward for an appointment with the consultant and would then be under the care of the bariatrics team and no longer with the weightloss program.

I am just worrying that my answers to their questions will be the wrong ones! They have previously asked if I had depression, I didn't know how to answer this. I have been depressed over my weight but I don't want to come over as unstable lol so not sure how to answer it. Then again, it might go in my favour, no idea!

They have asked me previously if I fall asleep in the afternoon's or while watching tv, I do, but don't know if that's a good or bad sign, at a loss really and don't want to muck it up...

The trick is this - honesty.

Unless you are hiding deep seated psychotic fears over weight and manic tendencies then it's not a massive issue.

They are there to help you, not trip you up by denying your chance to get healthy.

As for depression over obesity, most people are as that's where bad habits come in. Your job is to say what you feel but also how you tackle it, what your support network helps with.

It's easier on the day, just be honest [emoji4]

I went for my appointment and they were lovely. they were impressed that i had lost another kilo since my last appointment and said they would now pass me to the surgical team for them to decide which surgery to offer me. Fingers crossed they will be in touch soon!
