You might want to check out the "Passing For Thin" thread. It addresses all of the questions you asked on this thread, at least the psychological ones (for example, why I buy size 6P pants and still see a fat person when I put them on).

It's not all roses at goal -- we still have head issues and struggle with food issues. But the negatives don't control my life anymore. The band is the best thing I've ever done for myself.
