Lap band removed 5 days ago, conversion prep?

Recommended Posts

I had my lapband of 12 years removed 5 days ago. It was much more painful then expected. Instead of 4 incisions as planned I ended up with 7. I had a hernia repair. The lapband was placed a bit higher then it should have been. My stomach was adhered to my liver with scar tissue. I'm still very distended and in a lot of pain from surgery. I am going to get either the sleeve or bypass in late December. Does anyone have any suggestions for the next 3 months to help me better prepare for surgery? I did not know that I would be in this amount of pain. Is getting the sleeve or bypass just as painful? The lapband wasn't even as close. I want to make the most of my 3months til surgery so please make any suggestions. I'm on mushy foods and I still feel really full and distended when I eat. Does this feeling last forever?

Thank in advance.

HI!

Im sorry to hear you're having a rough time. I'm glad you're looking toward the future and what you can do to be prepared! I had my lapband removed after 3 years and have not had another kind of surgery, but my advice would be to continue to eat as though you had the band. (I understand you are on mushies right now). Eat amounts you would have eaten with the band as you prepare for your next surgery.

I would also suggest that, as soon as you are able, you increase your activity/exercise so that you increase your stamina before the next surgery. When I had my lapband removed, my surgeon told me to go for 5 walks a day! While that seemed excessive at the time, it was the best advice ever!

Right away I was walking for 10 minutes 5 times a day which added up to over 2 miles a day. The walks helped structure my day as I recovered, getting me up and moving throughout the day when it would have been so easy to just flop.

I hope these suggestions are helpful to you. I hope the pain you are having eases up, soon!

I had a 20 year band removed and converted to bypass at the same time. Band had adheared to my liver. I was not a candidate for sleeve due to the band eroding my stomach and adhering to the surrounding organs. Took over 3 hours for surgery but it was an easy recovery.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
