Some of the pros and cons depend on your medical issues. For example, diabetes and GERD/Barrett's Esophagus would often be factors leaning towards the gastric bypass while Crohn's disease or severe arthritis might be factors against. The sleeve has the advantage of usually not causing dumping and avoiding malabsorption but it can cause severe acid reflex. Current substance abuse would indicate neither surgery should be used. There are many good books on weight loss surgery so I would recommend reading a few as well as searching for old threads on this site about bypass versus sleeve. Above all ask your surgeon lots of questions such as how many of each type of surgery he/she has done and about which factors indicate gastric bypass and which factors indicate the sleeve. Good luck with your decision and welcome!
