Putting myself on a pre-op liquid diet

I'm thinking this week I might start a pre-op liquid diet. It's not required by my surgeon or insurance, but I don't want to take the chance of my surgeon postponing or canceling my surgery because I didn't lose all 20 pounds. I think I'm going to do 2 protein shakes and tomato soup for meals. For snacks I'll have SF jello, SF pudding, and apples or berries. I'm going to do it as long and as often as I can, maybe allow myself one or two full meals a week on the weekends. I still have 11 pounds to lose before the 27th. I'm nervous that I won't be able to stick with it.

  • I am not allowed fruit or fruit juices on my pre-op diet. No cream based soups (tomato). Might (?) consider limiting those things too. Good luck. Cannot imagine he didn't give you a diet to follow!!

  • I'm on day 4 of 14. I could seriously chew my arm off. But... I have lost 6 pounds. I know it's all water, but I don't really care. I think it is all to shrink your liver. Right?

Thanks! :)

So he gives you an amount to lose but no diet? Interesting! Wonder how these surgeons come up with their pre-op plans......

Yup. All about carbs (and increasing weight loss).

Mine said I had to lose 5% of my body weight before my case could go before the board of surgeons for consideration. I have had to maintain that loss and have to weigh in under that weight for surgery. I am 9 weeks from surgery and have about 5 weigh ins I have to make still...

Wow....where are u (state) or what insurance is this with? I have private insurance, but even Maryland Medicaid for low or no income individuals don't have those requirements....

I am on day 3 of 14, my dr. put me on the liquid diet to help shrink my liver and get me started on losing weight. I HAVE to drink High protein slim fast four time a day and in between I drink broth, eat sugar free jello and sugar free popsicles. Its hard but I have a lot of support. Plus i know what i will gain from this, my surgery and a better life.
