I Miss Oatmeal

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

So now I'm 4 weeks post op and I miss having oatmeal. prior to surgery I would take oatmeal at least 4 times a week. Kept me warm and full :)

I know I can still have oatmeal but thats about 27gm of carbs! I'm trying to keep my carbs within 40gm/per day. How do you all handle this?

Any substitues or do you still take oatmeal but limit carbs for the rest of the day? Plus how many grams of carbs are you trying to stay under per day? just curious.

Thanks

I guess it depends on what your doc will allow post-surgery. I have unsweetened oatmeal occasionally.

The other thing I do is make oatbran in the morning. Just a couple of tablespoons microwaved with a little less than a quarter cup of skim milk in a mug and sometimes I add a sprinkle of spices and some truvia. Gives me that "warm breakfast" feeling without as many net carbs because it's a much smaller portion and there's lots of Fiber. Since it's high-fiber, make sure your doc would okay it at this stage of your diet.

If you're going to do oat bran, though, start small with like a tablespoon. It definitely helps with any Constipation problems. ;)

I miss oatmeal too! I feel like I need to start my day out with Protein. I tried adding unflavored Protein powder to my oatmeal, but found the result to be disgusting. I am not a big fan of eggs, so I just have a Protein shake. I would love to go back to having oatmeal for Breakfast though. Maybe someday.

Of all the carbs you could eat, however, those are great ones! I am sure they are NUT approved!

I eat oatmeal almost every morning for breakfast... Its a good carb!! There is just no way around NOT eating carbs.... You will still lose weight if you eat oatmeal, whole grains, etc..... It's not like you can never eat them again... It's the bad carbs that you should steer clear of... The white rices, potatoes, enriched pastas, etc.... that really have no nutritional value.... I don't even count carbs but that's just me... Personally, I didn't have this surgery to diet the rest of my life... Being that we fill up so easily all of us should be mindful of what we eat and make sure we are making healthy choices. If you are 4 weeks out then you should be able to eat oatmeal.. Of course it seems that every Doctor/Nutritionist has their own rules but do what you feel is best.

Good Luck!

when I was on full liquids and pureeds, I had oatmeal or cream of wheat a lot. At that point, my doctor said not to really worry about the carbs. Actually, he still says not to really worry about carbs & just to get my Protein and fluids and overall calories in. My doc and my trainer at the gym both said if I stopped losing, I might have to increase my carbs. During my full liquid/pureed stage, I usually got 100 carbs or more a day. Now that I'm 12 weeks out, I normally get between 5 - 40 g of carbs per day, but I sometimes go higher if I have oatmeal - but that doesn't bug me since I know it's still good for me & I eat a lot less of it than I used to before surgery! Everyone is very different. I've heard of people staying under 40 g, but I've also heard of people who do 100 g or even some that do 150 g, depending on their activity level & their bodies. I try to focus more on my protein, fluids, & overall calories and don't pay too much attention to the carbs, but I am normally below 40 g now at 12 weeks out. However, being only 4 weeks out, depending on your food progression, I don't think it really matters a whole lot at this point. My food progression was slow and cream of wheat was a staple food for me for a long time!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
