Water weight loss?

I’ve never really understood this, and given that I started my 2 week pre-op liquid diet this morning, and have been in the bathroom many times, I’m wondering about how it works.:)

I’ve always heard that the initial weight lost is water weight. And I don’t understand why/how that works. I drink a lot of water all the time, but it seems to me that either 1)I’ve been carrying ‘extra’ water my body didn’t need, or doesn’t now that I’m not eating much, or 2)I’m getting dehydrated, which doesn’t make sense given that I’m drinking so much of it, and feel fine.
