Yes. Some people use slimfast, but they have a lot of sugar and not as much protein as some other Protein shake choices out there

Here is a basic summary of what Protein shakes are, what they are used for and what they are made from

http://www.webmd.com/diet/protein-shakes?page=1

Unlike slimfast and other weight loss shakes, Protein Shakes are utilized by wls patients to ensure adequate protein levels when they are restricted by how much solid food they can consume. It is also utilized post workouts for quick muscle recovery.

Protein shakes are great in the beginning, but I am a true believer that you have to learn to lose and maintain eating real food. I can't see drinking protein drinks the rest of my life so I don't drink them at all now and haven't since 4 months post op.

My doctor makes us stop drinking protein shakes once we get back to eating real food. It's just an easy way to shrink your liver before surgery (if you have to do the pre-op diet) and definitely a good way to get your nutrition after surgery until you can eat real food again. I used either the protein powder or Ensure High Protein. They were the best tasting that I found, though the powder was cheaper in the long run.

my doctor actually still encourages the protein shakes and it makes it easier for me when I'm on the go and dont want to grab junk or just need something to hold me over til dinner or something.
