Ketosis????
I'm finishing up day 3 of my 14 day pre-op liquid diet. I'm only allowed a max of 800 calories, max of 80g of carbs, and they want over 80g of Protein per day. Protien shakes, chicken broth, sugar free popsicles, Water and that's it...no "real food". So, like I said, I'm on day three and I'm now noticing this weird taste in my mouth...kinda sweet, but like day old gum and then kinda acid like at the same time. And my head is killing me, I feel like my energy has been sucked out of me, and I'm kinda jittery. I googled this and seems I'm in ketosis....some say that's good, some say that's bad. Anybody else having this issue?

I get the Swanson low sodium chicken broth and load it up with black pepper. Is that bad for me? It tastes pretty good.

I cheated AGAIN tonight...ate a few of my son's chicken nuggets..UGH!!! Then he told his dad he didn't like them, my husband looked at his plate and said "well you had to eat ALL of those to figure out you didn't like them?" ....thank goodness my boy is only 5 and just shook his head "yeah"...otherwise I would have been caught! LOL! I feel like a crack head! Better luck tomorrow!

December Bandsters 2009
I tried to "pig out" before my liquid diet, but I found that I couldn't. Maybe because I've been cutting back on what I eat since September, but I couldn't hardly eat. And the stuff I thought I would enjoy the most, I didn't. Except that chocolate chip cookie, now that was GOOD! lol, but I only had one and I was satisfied, normally I would have had two or three. For me, it showed me that I was ready to do this. But, now that I am on my 2nd day of the liquid diet, I'm feeling really weird. Jittery, agitated, and very tired. Anyone else having that problem? I'm not hungry, I just feel like my energy has been zapped. I only took in a little over 600 calories yesterday, I could have up to 800, but I just could not drink another protien shake. I like them, but that was just too much! I had 4 shakes, a cup of chicken broth, 2 sugar free popsicles, and then a had a cup of chicken noodle soup, even though I wasn't supposed to have the soup, but I needed something, just couldn't suck down another shake. Today is a new day....good luck everyone!

Too fat to graduate
It's not fair to single out people who are overweight. If they made everyone take it, I could understand. In fact, my employer is looking at charging overweight people more for health insurance premiums...not fair. They already will start charging smokers more starting 2010...I'm not even a smoker but I still think it's unfair.

sleep study?
I had to have two done and they billed $2,000 - $3500. With my insurance plan, I had to pay 20% of that and I was NOT happy. I was actully ticked that they made me get it done the first time, and when they found I had very, I mean very mild sleep apnea (like 5 and under is normal, mine scored 6) my surgeon made me go back for a 2nd one for the titration study and is making me get a CPAP machine. UGH! With having to pay 20% of my medical bills, I've racked up a good $4,000 of out of pocket expenses just for the testing alone. And my insurance is not covering the surgery, so I have to pay for that out of pocket as well. I tell people I'm putting a brand new car in my belly!

My nut said I can do 2 Slim Fast low carb, and 3 Atkins Advantage shakes (plus a cup of chicken broth, sugar free jello, and 2 sugar free popsicles) a day for my 2 week pre-op diet. I've already been drinking the Slim Fast and Atkins shakes for breakfast pretty much every day since September and I really like those...chocolate are the best. Especially when you get them really cold. They were kind of "blah" when I first started, but now I think they are pretty good.

Oh no! I did not want to hear that! I've got a sinus cold now, at least I've got 2 1/2 weeks to clear it up before surgery...makes me want to go hide in a bubble! Glad they were able to reschedule pretty quick...good luck!

No Birth Controll 90 days before and after Surgery ... PANICK BUTTON
My doctor requires you to be off birth control a month before and a month after surgery because it increases the risks of blood clots.

Who did you tell? Everyone?
I first just told my husband and parents. Once I told my teenage daughter, she told her teenage cousins, who told their parents, so word is all around the family now. I told my boss after my first visit with my surgeon and knew that I was going through with it, which was back in September. I just told a few of my co-workers, only because we were discussing the menu for our office holiday gathering, which will be while I'm on my liquid diet and I knew they would ask questions as to why I'm sipping on protein shakes instead of eating! I've gotten all good reactions, mostly "if you think this is good for you, I hope it works for you." My older brother has been really the only naysayer, and that was just in the beginning, telling me I should just continue dieting and excercise. But, I explained to him that I have been doing that and haven't been able to lose anymore significant weight, so he understands now that I'm at the point where I need help. But, I'm one of those people who when I set my mind to something, no one can convince me otherwise, so it didn't matter what anyone else thought...lol!
