  1. HELLO EVERYONE, I AM 60 YRS OLD AND CONCERNED ABOUT MY HEALTH. I HAVE SOME MEDICAL PROBLEMS INCLUDING DIABETES THAT IS NOW OUT OF CONTROL. I'M CONSIDERED A LIGHT WEIGHT FOR RNY BUT DUE TO MY DIABETES, IT'S WHAT I NEED ACCORDING TO MY BARIATRIC SURGEON. ONE OF MY PCP'S SAYS THAT IF YOU HAVE IT, I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO HELP YOU. HE FEELS THAT I CAN DO IT WITH DIET AND EXERCISE ALONE AND/OR WITH DIET pills. I SWORE NEVER TO TAKE THOSE AGAIN B/C ANOTHER DR. PRESCRIBED THEM FOR ME 8 YRS AGO AND I HAD TO GO TO THE E.R. WITH BREATHING, NERVE, AND PALPITATION PROBLEMS. I'M REALLY AFRAID OF MY WORSENING DIABETES AND REALLY AFRAID TO HAVE THE SURGERY TOO. MY MEDICAL PROBLEMS SHOULD MAKE IT A NO BRAINER B/C I DEFINITELY KNOW THAT I CAN'T DO THIS WITH DIET ALONE. NEEDING YOUR OPINION. THANKS
  2. Has anyone with type 2 diabetes gone into remission from it after being sleeved? My diabetes has gotten totally out of control no matter how hard I try. I know that I need help with eating right and exercise, but for some reason I feel hopeless. I remove the band 8 months ago and my surgeon feels that RNY is the better surgery to help with my diabetes. I am overweight but feel a little hesitant about having RNY. At 215 lbs, I feel that I can get the results I need with the sleeve but what I need the most is good positive results with my blood sugars. Also, does anyone have acid reflux since being sleeved?
  3. Thanks coco6983, I needed to hear that. Best of luck to you too!
  4. Mine was removed 7 mos ago. I am scared too! I've tried to lose on my own since then, but I just cant' do it. I have no incentive or motivation to exercise. I feel like giving up b/c I've been torn between rny and the sleeve for so long, that now I don't want to do anything and just live with getting the complications of my diabetes. I never thought in a million years that I would ever openly admit or write something like this. But actually by writing it out, I can see how stupid it look and sound. If I am afraid of complications from both diabetes and RNY, then why not just have either sleeve or rny surgery to prevent the obvious complications that comes with the uncontrolled diabetes that I have. Thanks for opening up my eyes.
  5. Hi Heather, It sounds like you're doing great! as long as you're happy, try to stay positive. I should be having surgery in another 6 weeks and I know already that I'll be going through the same thing. I am already hearing from family that I don't need to have the surgery, and it is so hard to keep my head straight. My mom,2 brothers, and a sister to die from diabetes complications. I have it too and want the best solution, I think RNY is my better choice. I'm happy for you and glad you asked the question that I know I'll be hearing. I weigh 220 and carry it all from waist up.

    With in 3 months

Congrats! I'm hoping to have mine in another 6 weeks. I can feel your joy. I'm happy for you.
  7. Hello everyone, I've heard that you will lose slower once you convert to RNY from the band. Mine was removed several months ago and I really don't want to lose too fast b/c I only have around 50 lbs to lose. How was it for those of you that had RNY later in two steps or even in one step. Was the weight loss slower? Thanks~

    Getting Close to Surgery

misformimi, I have the same bmi as she does. I have all of the co-morbidities and My Dr. feels that RNY would be my better choice. I had the band and had terrible acid reflux issues as well. I'm afraid to have this surgery b/c I'm a light weight. My surgeon's nurse said to me "Why don't you just get the sleeve". Well, #1 insurance wouldn't pay for it and #2 RNY will give me a better chance of putting my diabetes in remission. The sleeve may be a better choice for her and me, but I hate to imagine living with the acid reflux as I did with the band. She probably did mean to post on the Sleeve forum.
  9. It'll get better and I'm so sorry you went through that. One of the nurses in my Dr's office said to me " why are you seeking RNY? why don't you just get the sleeve". She said that b/c I was a light weight for RNY. Another said to me on another visit "Oh Man, you're gonna be super skinny". Both times I felt awful, b/c I have pondering over doing this for years and I would't if it wasn't for my diabetes and HBP. My insurance wouldn't even pay for the sleeve at that time. I've thought to go elsewhere too, but this Dr. has already performed surgery on me when he removed my band and other hospitals are far away. I felt like crying too but just hang in there. Most of us have some sorts of issues going in, whether it's family, fear, or finances. I'm still waiting too!
  10. Hi, I'm your age, hight and 3 lbs heavier. I haven't had surgery yet but will soon be starting the pre diet. I'm hoping to have a date set for week 1or 2 in March. I had the band for 5 years and had it removed 6 months ago. I've gained 10# since the removal and 13 back before the removal. I'm tired of waiting around now b/c I've heard and have done plenty of homework. I've searched around for the best surgery that's right for me. This will be my third surgery too. One Dr. said that if I were sleeved and it didn't work out, then I could still have RNY done. I say knowing this, and due to my co-morbidities, I will just do RNY to avoid a possible 4th surgery. Please! Let's keep in touch.
  11. Thanks Golflady, That sounds like a good rate. Sounds like you're doing well. Keep going
  12. Notinks, I'm no spring chicken which is one reason why I don't care to lose too fast, I have enough hanging skin as it is LOL. I can handle an average lose of 2-4 lbs per week, but not 10-12 per week. Thanks, that was my reason for asking.
  13. Hi Robin, I can totally empathize with you. I was banded for 5 years and had it removed 6 mos. ago. I couldn't decide on which surgery that I should convert to b/c I still have 60 lbs to lose to satisfy me and not more than that. Dr. said RNY b/c of diabetes and high blood pressure. I've always been soooo afraid to have RNY. I don't want to look sickly either and I told my Dr. that (no reply). I also told him that I was afraid to get too skinny and lose too much weight. I've gained 20 lbs back and now weigh 225 and I'm 5'2" tall. I 'm worn out from worrying about this procedure b/c i have to do all the pre-op test again and 1 month of liquids. Therefore, I have to lose even more weight before he will do it. My weight is unevenly distributed. I am waist & top heavy with thin legs and wrists, so even though I'm of an older age, i still care about my body image. I've dropped out of this several times and I feel like my Dr's office staff is sneakily watching me, or am I paranoid? Are they watching me due to my size, or do they look at me as being a nut case. I've decided to do it b/c I owe it to myself to try and get healthy. I also have diverticulitis. We can do this. Good Luck!
  14. Hello, I would love to hear from all of you that are going to have surgery as a light weight. I have morbidity conditions and have for years. I chose to have the lap band 5.5 years ago and lost 45 lbs. I weighed 246 at that time. After removing the band, I now weigh 218 lbs. I wish I had listened to my 1st surgeon and had RNY instead of chickening out and opting for the band. My surgeon now is saying that my insurance will not cover the sleeve, but it will cover RNY. This is the surgery I need in order to help get rid of the morbid conditions I have. Anyone else going through this or has gone through this? Please let me know, I need help! I am 5'2" and top heavy from the waist up. Although image shouldn't matter but I do worry about that too at times. Thanks
  15. Thanks to all of you. I feel so much better about this. I know that the arthritis in my feet will be happy I took this route.
  16. I don't think that I would mind the slow weight loss either. I think it may be better also.
  17. that's why I'm looking into doing this (RNY) in hopes of taking control before my health really get out of control if it's not too late. So far, So good. Ever since being banded, I really started to look pregnant. I had 2 bellies stacked ..LOL
  18. I'm no stranger to CP, my 30 year old son has it.
  19. I know what you mean too. I'm just ready to do the same. I've been looking into the sleeve also and believe it may go a little easier for me, but deep down inside I know that I need RNY. This whole thing has been so complicated for me. I want to rid my diabetes and hope that I don't have any bone issues due to my arthritis. I'm weird too...LOL
  20. I'm glad you're doing OK and thanks for the info
  21. Thanks so much for sharing that and congrats to the both of you. I am researching RNY and SLEEVE right now. I weigh 215 and stand around 5'2" tall. I had the lap band removed. I was thinking RNY due to my diabetes and the fact that my insusrance would not pay for the sleeve. But now they will and that changes things. I'm happy to hear good things about the sleeve and hope that I too can be an inspiration to someone. Thanks so much~
  22. You know, I think you're right! But I am trying to find out about the sleeve too. I had horrible acid reflux with the band and have heard you may also have it with the sleeve. After I see my surgeon next week, I will surely ask him about possible reflux issues.
  23. You look great in your after pic, good luck with getting there again. I can relate to every post and reply that was made here. I am in a situation as well. I would like to get the sleeve, but I would also like to have RNY b/c I've heard that it has a better % rate in putting your diabetes in remission. I am a light weight and fear that RNY is too much. Someone replied to a post I'd made stating that saying " Because of my weight, RNY would be like cracking a walnut with a sledgehammer. Why not use a nutcracker?". that makes a lot of sense.
  24. I hope to do as well as you all have. You have inspired me b/c I'm always being asked why do I want bypass, and that I'm not big enough for it. I've been told that my insurance will now pay for me to have sleeve surgery. I started posting about it yesterday thinking that maybe (because of my lower weight) that the sleeve would be my better choice. Well, It may be best for me size wise, but I really do want to put my diabetes into remission forever. so I'm back to thinking RNY. I'm so confused.
  25. I too had the lap and in 2008. The first two years were wonderful and I got as low has 185. I too am 5'2" and a petite female, in other words I was far never big boned. In 2012 I finally admitted to having some serious issues with my band; reflux, heartburn, not eating until 4 in the afternoon because my band had to warm up. It was two years of hell for me. I finally went in and had an egd and found out I had intestinal metaplasia, caused from the reflux and heartburn caused from the band. I decided then and there to have it taken out. My surgeon advised me that revisions are more complicated but I was an excellent candidate. I was revised to RNY on June 12, 2013. I weighed 218 on the day of surgery. I hit my goal weight in the summer of 2014 and had a circumferential lower body lift at the beginning of November. I feel fantastic, am holding steady at 110 to 112 and now have the figure I felt I always should have had. I eat sensibly, exercise and take my Vitamins daily. I bought jeans last week at lucky brand and got size double zero. Never in a million years did I ever think I would be that tiny. I look normal and healthy and when I look at pictures of myself at my highest weight of 270 size 24 I can't believe it's me. Anyone starting this journey know it isn't easy but it can be done. I wasn't a fast loser but I worked the process every single day. Good luck!
