    Worst compliment

WOW - Do people even think before they speak? I guess she meant it as a compliment. My mom, who had a weight obsession, asked me after my surgery why I mutilated myself. She had know Idea how much I struggled with my weight. Probably didn't realize that my weight struggles were after watching and hearing her and her mother commenting about it all the time. I think the German roots and farm family background weight loss was probably considered a sign that you were being properly fed!

    Losing more weight NOT exercising???

When working with clients I would ask them a simple question Do you want to lose 20 lbs or do you want to look like you lost 20 lbs? This always helped me get a snapshot of their thoughts in the fat loss zone. Which is more important to you - The scale weight or a smaller pants size? After my surgery I had a lot of mental work to do on this! That weight can come off so fast at first but when I added strength training, I have been able to increase my metabolic rate which will help me maintain my losses in the future.
  3. I have kept off 100 lbs for over 20 years - Pushing a bit to finish the weight loss but still life is much better than it was pre-surgery

    lean muscle mass building

As a woman, especially a woman with bariatric surgery, you should not be getting huge. Women do not have the testosterone to be able to build huge muscle. Bodybuilders try to build muscle are usually in a caloric surplus which is hard to do as a bariatric patient. The women you see that appear huge have worked many many years to build big mature muscles and some are taking "supplements" or performance enhancing products to artificially get bigger. The beauty of lifting weights is that it increases your metabolism for up to 48 hours after each session. As a person that has lost a lot of weight it is great for filling in those areas where there might be some skin issues. For example exercises for the biceps, triceps and shoulders will help for those area in the upper arm that frequently have loose skin issues. I had my surgery 25 year ago - 16 years ago I became a personal trainer because I love learning. A simple gym routine could be Leg Press - Lying Leg Curls - Banded Walks {or abduction machine ) These would target almost all of the leg muscles Chest press (or pushup movement) - Lateral Pulldown - Shoulder Press Chest Press hits your chest and triceps Pulldowns or rows hit different parts of your back and your biceps Shoulder Press Primarily targets your shoulders but targets the triceps as a push move There are three was to build muscle (hypertrophy) Do the highest weight you can with good form - Do lots of reps at a lighter weight with good form - Slow the rep way down in a controlled motion You want to challenge the muscles for growth but you don't want to get hurt Most machines have a picture that shows you have to do each exercise correctly but ask the front desk if you can get a little help. There are lots of videos online also or give me should if you need help. I prefer bodyweight exercises but do things like the leg press because I realized I had arthritis after I lost weight and I have to be careful about some movements. I learned to master modifications. This is just a sample idea not a prescription for medical advice.

    Weight loss and menopause

Well the Biote is a pelleting under the skin. But the doc has me taking all these supplements in addition. I have been almost 25 years post op. I am so tired of popping supplements

    lean muscle mass building

A little input as I am a bariatric patient and a personal trainer. If you are new to weight lifting you have more capacity to gain lean mass at first. Women are still not going to get huge muscles because we do not have enough testosterone. The women that you see with huge big muscle have been lifting really heavy for many years and are probably taking some 'supplementation' to assist. Lifting weights increases your metabolic rate for up to 48 hours after a session. In addition to the test issue most of use cannot eat enough calories to get into a surplus to gain lost of muscle. It you have stopped losing weight on the scale you might start checking other ways like using a tape measure or how are your pants fitting. If you are sore after a workout your body uses water to help heal those muscles . I can be up 3 lbs. after a good leg workout but I know it isn't fat, it's just a muscle pump.

    Weight loss and menopause

I am taking Biote but since I started this switch in HRT I seem to have stopped my weight loss progress - I am giving it two more months and then start looking at other options. I switched to this form because they are better about testing but there are more supplements and I was actually trying to get away from more pills - I have enough of those to take already
  9. Two things I did to help with hair thinning after my surgery - Shorten it a bit and perhaps add some layers so it reduces the weight. Add some highlights - The color helps thicken the hair a bit. I also have dark hair and a fair scale so it helps with the contrast. I am doing Nioxin right now because I am way post op and think my current thinning is either post COVID or menopausal.
  10. I expected a diet plan from my surgeon or the dietitians. What I got was a booklet of recipes and items I knew from my personal pre-op research online was not appropriate for a post bariatric patient. I have pretty much had to figure it out on my own. My surgeon at a support group meeting even said the surgery he performs doesn't cause malabsorption. Dude if you did the surgery you said your did - Yes it does! I never went back to a meeting because I knew I knew more about my nutrition than my surgeon. I kept the packet to the day (25 years ago) just for amusement.
  11. My 25 year anniversary is rolling around next week. I wish I had known about the hypoglycemia issue. I don't really get dumping syndrome much. I also get some serious leg and foot cramping at times but when I am good with my supplements it gets better!
