    Deep stitch

It's the anchor stitch. It will hurt like heck for a few weeks and then it dissolves. Be careful bending and lifting until it subsides.
  2. I am now 5 months from surgery. I've had horrible food aversions but some of that is easing. I can now eat bacon again. Before, it was disgusting. The same can be said of a few other foods. I'd love to be able to tolerate chicken but it's still off the menu. I am taking tasteless GENEPRO twice a day, 60 grams to keep my protien up and it is giving me some strength back. Also, I've switched to a 1 a day bariatric vitamin. Weight loss as of now is 118 pounds and my goal is 210 pounds. Hope this encourages some who are struggling. Stick with it.

    FIVE MONTHS OUT

If you add it to oatmeal, add extra fluid, either water or milk because it will make it dry and pasty otherwise. I just didn't like it in oatmeal but I think it was the texture. I need to get my wife to make it again but with the extra liquid.

    FIVE MONTHS OUT

As far as being hungry. I'm not. I'm never hungry but I am thankful there are a few things I am able to eat just for the nutrition. I'm still eating a little tuna but since the bacon flavor has returned I'm really pleased to have it. I eat bacon and lettuce sandwiches on whole wheat bread with no condiments. Tomatoes still taste off and I loved them like crazy before. I eat a few mashed potatoes, the Bob Evans kind you get in the store prepared. Green beans taste good. The wife fixes them with a little butter and onions and cooks them a long time. Most raw fruits and veggies taste OK. Again, I am never hungry. I haven't been hungry since Feb. 15, the date of my surgery. I used to drink at least 5 20 ounce bottles of water a day. It's all I ever drank. It doesn't taste bad now but did in the beginning. I struggle to get the 64 ounces of fluid but I'm trying. The taste aversion happens to almost everyone. It's the one thing they're not very forthcoming about before surgery. That's why they stress protien. They don't tell you, "Every bite of meat you put in your mouth after surgery is going to be disgusting." Instead, the dieticians stress protien. So, get it any way you can until your tastes come back. Enjoy having no hunger. The taste aversion aids weight loss so just eat for nutrition purposes and enjoy the weight loss.

    FIVE MONTHS OUT

I can taste the genepro a little. I put it in one ounce of OJ and 3 ounces of water and chase it with decaf tea sweetened with splenda. I got to a point where all I could eat was tuna and never enjoyed it. So, the genepro has been a real help. It can cause constipation. I got off of it for a few days due to that but immediately went downhill with weakness. My friend who suggested the genepro puts it in a smotthie with a vanilla protien shake but I'm still averse to the shakes. Can't stand them.
  6. I transitioned from a stapling to bypass and I’ve lost 100 pounds since January 20. Still losing.

    Any East TN bypassers?

I live in Middle TN but had a revision surgery and had to do it in Knoxville. My surgeon was Dr. Stephen Boyce and he was great. I'm now 2 months post op and doing pretty well. Some foods just taste awful. Dr. Boyce is the only doctor I could find in the state who would convert my 1984 VBG into a R&Y. I highly recommend him.
  8. I did fine with protein shakes pre surgery, but post-op, yuck. Can't tolerate them. A friend put me onto Genepro Protein Powder. It is tasteless and you can mix it in anything you can tolearte to drink. My friend uses coffee but since I'm 4 years caffeine free, I mix mine in diluted fruit juice like cran/pomegranate or grape juice. One scoop delivers 30 grams of protein and it will be worth the cost for sure if it works for you.

    I hate food....

I am now 2 months out from surgery. I've found the only meats I can tolerate is tuna packets and smoked salmon. I can round out the day with Genepro in diluted juice, a protein bar, I can eat some raw veggies (cooked ones make me nauseous) some fruits are tolearable. I have been able to eat some bran cereal to keep the pipes working. 😉The wife had her family over last night, she picked up Pulled Pork BBQ, which I used to love, and I took one bite and had to literally spit it out. I can't salt anything. All dressings make salad unbearable. It's getting exhausting. I'd ask for anyone who has had aversion to meats such as chicken, ground beef and pork, what are you eating? I'd love some recommendations because I'm in a real rut with the tuna and salmon. I don't know how how much longer I can go with JUST tuna and salmon.

    Gastric Bypass Surgery

I am 68 and had the R&Y on Feb. 15. I came through surgery fine. Don't listen to your friends. If you haven't lost the weight by now, you probably never will, that was the conclusion I came to. In the end your health will improve. I'm less than 2 months from surgery and I've already dropped one and a half BP medications. The surgery isn't all roses. Foods you enjoyed before will likely become disgusting to you. This is a side effect that occurs in a very high percentage of patients of R&Y. It's usually not a longterm problem. My friend had it and his tastes returned in about 8 months. The good thing is, you're having this surgery to lose weight and if you have an aversion to most foods, that will only help you lose more. I pretty much live on smoked salmon, Starkist tuna packets, protein bars and Genepro protein powder. I mix the Genepro with diluted fruit juice. Trust me, the protein shakes you drink before surgery will not taste the same. I can't stand them now but the Genepro is tasteless. I'll eat a few crackers at times. I am at about where I'm supposed to be. I've lost 70 lbs so far. Be sure your surgeon prescribes medication to avoid gall stones. Rapid weight loss can cause them. Also, eat nuts sparingly while drinking lots of water. Lots of nuts and low water intake can cause kidney stones. You'll do fine. You're not old. I'm old!

    Stomach Stapling from 1982!

I had the stomach stapling in 1984. It was the Vertically Banded Gastroplasty. On the 15th of February I had it revised to a Gastric Bypass and I am doing splendidly. I never had any symptoms like you describe but I did gain my weight back after the 1984 proceedure. The good thing about the Bypass is it is harder to gain weight back. My surgeon was Dr. Stephen Boyce in Knoxville TN. He was the only surgeon in the state I could find who would tackle my revision. No one else wanted to touch me. I highly recommend him. I'm sure you could fine someone to do a revision for you but for some reason the old surgeries seem to cause most surgeons to shy away. Good luck.

    65 yr olds with bypass

I'm 68 and had revision from a 1984 surgery, VBG, to R&Y on February 15th this year. I've lost 55 pounds. Food doesn't taste right but many say that will improve with time. Right now it helps with the weight loss because I only eat for nourishment. I've had no complications other than food tasting different but that's pretty much par for the course.

    I hate food....

I'm a month out from R&Y and nothing tastes good. I got to the point where I had to stop the shakes. Then I tried tasteless GenePro protein powder. I used to drink decaf tea sweetened with Splenda all of the time. I've started back with it, mix in some lemon juice, add the GenePro, mixes right in and I can't taste a thing. So it has enabled me to get in some protein. At a month now I'm able to eat some fruit and it tastes fair but it seems I have some indigestion after everything I eat. From what I've read this does get better. As for now, it's helping me get the weight off. If I could just go without eating, I would, but I'm eating now just for nourishment.
