I was told that we had to give up diet soda before the operation. I thought I would give myself until the last month to enjoy it but at four months, I was just told that I need to be off of them now. Have I messed up by not stopping it before now? Do you think I can continue drinking them for another month? My doctor says now but I'm curious as to what other instructions are out there. In the scheme of things this isn't a large issue but it is a burning one for me!

I was all set to go with the sleeve but my surgeon steered me towards the bypass because I suffer from heartburn. It's not that bad but that is the option that he would choose for me. I have 80 pounds to lose, have a very large sweet tooth, and have been known to binge quite a bit. I like the fact that the sleeve takes away your hunger and would prefer that over the dumping syndrome that the bypass has. So many pros and cons to both of them. I think I'm going to have to go with my surgeon's recommendation because he knows best after all. The bypass does make me a little bit more nervous....... I too would welcome more dialogue between the sleeve versus bypass. Thanks.

Does the pre-op diet start close to the surgery or does it start six months before the surgery? (probably a silly question.)

I'm 60 and at the very beginning of this process. And finding great comfort in reading all of your comments. Is it possible to chew sugar-free gum? I find the chewing process very comforting.

60 years old here. Surgery not even scheduled yet. Does having bypass require more willpower than sleeve?

You are correct. My surgeon did recommend the bypass but of course said that the decision was ultimately up to me. I did go into the meeting with hopes of the sleeve but without any knowledge of the heartburn complication. My frustration is that some days I don't have any heartburn whatsoever and other days I do. I think it has a lot to do with what I eat but the surgeon kind of negated that theory. Hmmm.

I too have been trying to decide between the sleeve and bypass. Heartburn situation not great. Would love more dialogue on the subject if possible.

Hi all! Newbie here. Just had my first consult with the doc. Went in thinking I would have the sleeve but he steered me away from that because of my heartburn. Thought the bypass would be better for me. Not feeling great with that choice but of course the doc is leaving it up to me. Can anyone give thoughts or comments about this? Only day one and so many questions!!

Time for more research and more research and I'm very thankful for this opportunity to reach out to others in the same situation. Now I know why my 18-year-old daughter is on her iPad so long. I've been on it for the last three hours and am just beginning!!

Newbie here. Unfortunately I can't answer your question because that is specifically why I am on here. The heartburn situation threw me for a loop when the doc told me that it would only get worse if I got the sleeve. I share all your same questions and concerns. Anyone out there who can help?
