  1. You shouldn't be doing anything other than walking for at least 6 weeks post op. After that, most gyms offer some kind of trainer who will set you up with a simple workout plan in writing---even the YMCA does that cheaply. No tips involved. You go, workout and go home. I don't do anything other than cardio, though.....when I need to really bulk up, I'll start lifting again. Ask about getting a guided tour of the gym from someone who works there. I know you recently joined and they should have some sort of an orientation....... but for now, Jay, wait til the good doctor tells you to start doing something other than walk.
  2. You can definitely do 10 pounds in 6 weeks....keep working out!
  3. Thanks, Heidi. I changed my profile pic about a week ago and forgot to change the avatar pic, too! Congrats on the workouts. I'm training to run a 5K in 11 weeks, so I have been doing a training regime that will hopefully lead to my finishing the race and not being the last one, the fat girl at the end. I hope it will help me push off a little more weight in the process, though.....When are you going away and where to? Are you excited? Glad to hear you're working out. Initially you may experience some weight gain/stagnancy as your muscles retain Water, but it will dissipate as you continue to workout. Just don't get discouraged if that happens. I find I am so much better able to tolerate just about any foods after a workout! I love it. I'm so freaking sore right now, but happy it's over. Oh, and this is my vacation.
  4. Jay, It's Sari...and the Plastic surgeon will be attending the June GB support group meeting......she will give us a date or reminder when it comes closer. Hope you didn't catch some sort of communicable disease on that T ride. :mad2:
  5. So glad to finally put the screenname to the face!! Thanks for joining us. I know tinywishes would have been there had she been feeling better. I'm also glad that some of the others joined--it's unusual to have some 2-3 years post-op. Another great meeting. Hope you'll all be back in March! :blushing:
  6. Congrats. Are you coming to the support group tonight? Would love to see you. :tongue2:
  7. Ok, so this definitely isn't the most medically sound advice, but if you're retaining water that much, shouldn't you just take a diuretic and or a laxative the night before and not eat or drink anything before weighing in?? I'd make an early morning appt. and then eat after. They didn't weigh me in before surgery once I was scheduled!! Jay, good luck! Hope it all goes well. :frown:
  8. Jay, You're talking about two different things here--Anemia is low iron. They often suggest iron rich diet to fix or a supplement. The apple would be low blood sugar and that is pretty common with the diet.... Good luck tomorrow. Call me. I'll bail yer arse out. I know what that hunger is like.
  9. Jay, Wouldn't you rather know before surgery, even if it possibly delays?? I'd hate to find out you have some sort of a heart murmur or something like that and had issues in surgery!! Just so you know, while I certainly don't know your mental status right now, but those flutters are pretty common with stress---if you're starting to really stress over this, it could just be panic-related. It can't hurt to ask.....wait til they're prepping you if you must, but please say something to them! Congrats on the extra 5!!! Only a few more days! Are you excited???
  10. Don't agonize over the 4 pounds. Do your best to get back to the basics. Drink all of your Water. Eat your Protein. Move a little every day. You'll get back and they'll come back off. Don't let losing track allow you to stay there----make little changes to follow the "rules". A day or two being off track won't kill you. Staying off track will. You'll get there. Don't get down on yourself!
  11. Oh, Jay---I'm so glad! So it's soon AND you will have a private room for your recover! That's a huge bonus. Just don't leave us for that OTHER support group. So one more week, right? You don't have to be perfect on that diet, and the reality is that the more you require perfection, the more you'll want what you shouldn't have. If you can find a way to have just a small amount of what someone else is eating, you'd be ok. But, let's be entirely honest. We wouldn't be banded if we had that kind of self control. But best of luck to you. It only gets easier from here.
  12. Keep your resolve. You'll be fine. Good luck. Let us know when you reschedule! :cursing:
  13. Jay, I hate to burst your bubble, but I'm rather confident he only does surgery at the Brigham on Tuesdays or Wednesdays...... I know he sees post-op patients the following day. If I remember correctly, he does surgery one day a week at each hospital. Did Jennifer say Thursday or Friday were even an option? This happened to my brother when he had to have hip replacement surgery. (He was 34 with 3 young children and had it all figured out so he'd be home from the hospital while my sister-in-law was on vacation to help him.....) He had to reschedule a few weeks later. I'm so sorry you're going through this! Good luck. Keep us posted. While one night of pizza won't kill you.....if it stretches over the course of a few days or even weeks, the eating will put you a few steps back.
  14. He wants to see that you're committed to this....the only thing he won't put up with is your gaining weight. Good luck, Jay! 2 more days!!!!
  15. Hey there, Jay. You're so right about Dr. R. I swear he doesn't remember me from one appointment to the next...but he is a skilled surgeon. Glad to hear you're doing well! Enjoy your time off. Good luck with the surgery. Hoping you'll come down to the next meeting so we can see you! :tongue2:
  16. The Faulkner is usually the week before, but on Mondays....only holidays might change this...
  17. Good luck, Jean!! Keep us posted on how things go. Hope to see you at the next meeting! :cursing:
  18. Wow....watched your eating AND went to the gym? Tiny, good job!! I'm thinking of going now, but I may just wait and see if tonight is date night or staying home. If I'm staying home anyway, I may as well go workout. If I'm going out, I don't want to have to shower and wash my hair again. (Complete laziness, I know....) Have a super weekend! :scared2:
  19. Wow....look at all I've missed by being busy for a day! Great to meet everyone at the meeting. Hope that surgery goes well for all of you, and that those of you who have already been banded find a way to stay on the path of trying to follow the rules. Let's face it, changing all those years of bad habits won't happen overnight. I'm hoping to go workout tonight. (Notice I'm back to hoping, not planning.....) I haven't felt much like working out, and since it's rare for me, I figure I should listen and obey my body. So tell me more about this ibuprofen thing---if I stop taking it immediately, will I undo any possible damage I've done?? Can I take one at a time? Is it always dangerous to take it??? Have a good week!
  20. Jay, I strongly suggest a drive thru window---keeps the idea of ordering bad foods at bay. :wink2:
  21. Jay, Sit tight and I'll bring some with me!! :Dancing_wub: I have an appointment in the South end with a teacher at 4:00 and will most likely be hanging out in the foyer by 5:30 or so myself. (I, too, live on the South shore and won't be driving home in between....) Just an FYI: McDonalds has 1% milk, as does Dunkin Donuts. But don't agonize over the diet and everything being perfect. If you get the right milk, great....if not, it's not going to kill you!! Don't allow yourself to ruin your life over a few carnation instant breakfast shakes. Heck, change things up a little and eat the dinner for lunch. :wink2: I will be there tonight. I totally forgot until a few minutes ago and am glad Jay posted. (I actually made a date and had to cancel....oh, the single life!!) Anyone else coming???
  22. That's EXACTLY how I ended up with Dr. Robinson. It all depends on how flexible your schedule is, but I started the process and had surgery in less than 6 weeks.....had all of my testing done, etc. I was able to make my work schedule around any appointments they could give me. (It helps that I work nearby and have flexibility) If you're looking to do this sooner, I strongly recommend Dr. Robinson. He's not at all personable and kind of reminds me of that autistic doctor on Grey's Anatomy, BUT he is a great surgeon--Harvard educated and very good at what he does.
  23. Hey there, darlin! I know it's initially daunting, but it really isn't any worse than giving blood. You will LIE down on the table so that your port is more easily accessed. Keep in mind, all of us started with a somewhat hidden port---until you lose some serious weight, it's pretty well hidden. You can look the other way as your doctor inserts the needle. I have had a few times when my doctor had to insert and push around a little bit, but even that didn't hurt. (You know I just have to be honest with you....) But with all of that, I dread going on liquids far more than the pain of a fill. You'll be ok. Good luck! I'm around in Dot all week if you need me....drop me a note!! :sneaky:
  24. Yes, Yes, Yes!!! WE have our meeting at the Brigham on Tuesday, January 20th from 6-8 PM in Carrie Hall. It's all the way down the end of the building. Meetings at the Brigham for Lap-Band patients are on the 3rd Tuesday of every month. There's a core group of us who usually go, but many of us missed the December meeting because of other commitments. We WILL be there this Tuesday, though!! Hope you can join us!! :sneaky: Here's a link to directions. BE CAREFUL to get the date for the Lap-Band, not the GB group. We've had a lot of GB people show up to our meetings by mistake! http://www.brighamandwomens.org/weightmanagement/support.aspx
  25. Welcome Jay and Jean! It will be so nice to have new faces--NOT that we don't love the old ones, but new blood always changes things a little. Who else is coming next week??
