Hey Bigdog56, Keep the chin up, you wouldn't believe the change coming to you. Yah, I smoked over a pack a day until the end of last year when I went cold turkey. After the second week I was good to go. I had the RNY mid August and I couldn't be more happy. Expect some pain and maybe a set back but the future is now in your control. Good luck.

That would be nice. I'm now on phase 3, very soft foods and everything is going as planned. I did have internal bleeding after surgery and needed to go back to the hospital for a few more days but it was stopped with medication. Please try and stay on your diet before surgery and again best of luck.

I haven't seen this subject so I'll tell all. I had RNY on the 18th of Aug and was in the hospital 4 days. Three days after I was released I had dumping from a BariWise Cream of Tomato soup. There was dark blood in all three of my bowel movements. The next day I had another bowel movement with dark blood in it. I called the RN and she was really concerned about the color but to me red is red and all shades in between. We agreed it was old blood and to just watch it. Two days later I had another dumping episode from clear chicken broth. There was a lot of red and dark blood coming out. I could hardly stand up without feeling like I was going to pass out. I made it to bed that night but the next morning the dizziness was still there and more blood. I called my RN and of course she said go to the nearest emergency room. There I was stabilized with two units of blood and medevaced to my surgery hospital. I strayed there three days. The bleeding stopped with medication but we never did find out were it was coming from. The whole episode was worrisome for my family but I looked at it as a small bump in the road to my ultimate goal. Don't get me wrong that I wasn't worried. I didn't want another surgery to fix the problem. Thankfully I didn't and now I'm back on track. I guess the moral of the story would be to pay attention to your bowel movements after surgery.

1 week post op with RNY and last night was bad. I had a BariWise Cream of Tomato soup and was sick with dumping and dry heaves. It only had 3g of sugar so I thought it was safe. The large amount of blood in my bowels is the concern. I still have the runs 12 hours later but I held from having a movement all night long. I think the blood flow is slow enough that it's not an emergency. Anyone going through this or has?

I spend 4 days in the hospital but it could of been 3. The surgery went well but the pain was extreme during the recovery phase. All-in-all I'd do it again to get what I expect from this RNY procedure. I hope everyone else's surgery went will and best wishes for all.

I recently was a devote vegan for a year, nothing from a living creature. I'm working on going back to it after my RNY on Aug 18th. Does anyone know if protein powders are vegan friendly?

I didn't have any documented weight loss program history ether. I told them about using colored weight loss pills and how I always battled weight gains. It's real how you tried to loose weight. Because you think you don't have anything to write down you really do. State your efforts with estimated dates. Tricare says Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig are used as good documentation. I joined Weight Watchers because of the requirement but it was the same dates as my three month doctor supervised diet. For me Tricare didn't check if I was a member or not. The following is straight out of the Tricare requirements. It will all be good for you so try not to worry to much. TRICARE will cost share any of the following open or laparoscopic bariatric surgical procedures: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass Vertical banded gastroplasty Gastroplasty (stomach stapling) Adjustable gastric banding (i.e., adjustable LAP-BAND®) If you meet all of the following conditions: You're at least 18 years old or you must provide documentation of completion of bone growth. You were unsuccessful with non-surgical medical treatments for obesity. Your medical records must show your failed attempts. Diet programs, such as Weight Watchers®* and Jenny Craig*, are acceptable methods of dietary management, as long as there are monthly clinical visits with your doctor and medical documentation of your participation and your progress throughout the course of the dietary program. *These programs are not covered by TRICARE. Physician-supervised programs made-up of only weight-loss medication management, do not meet this requirement. You have proof of one of the following: A body-mass index greater than or equal to 40 kilograms per meter squared (kg/m2); or A body-mass index of 35-39.9 kg/m2 with one clinically significant comorbidity, including but not limited to, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obstructive sleep apnea, Pickwickian syndrome, hypertension, coronary artery disease, obesity-related cardiomyopathy, or pulmonary hypertension. Hey all, I'm retired AF with Tricare prime south. Everything went smooth with the approval. Just follow the Tricare requirements. By the way it's three months supervised dieting. My approval took about a week for approval after it was submitted.

Thanks, I was worried how many hotel nights I needed for my family. I live about 100 miles from the hospital and want to reserve the nights now.

Since this ones not here I had to throw it into the batch. I have had a fair pre op experience but so far very limited for what I expected from all the forums here. My RNY date is August 18th 2014 so if you come across this in the future and want to know how it all went down just drop me a line.
