Well, I am in Texas and have BC/BS and I pray, just pray that they will take care of mine. My BMI is 40 exactly.

Well, guess what....I never once in my life thought it would be a good thing to be called "morbidly obese", yet today those words were music to my ears...er..yea, and my pocketbook. Looks like there is a chance, maybe just a slight chance that because my BMI is 40 that the insurance will pay. What a relief. The consult today was excellent. Anyone in the Houston area, Dr. Spivak seems like a terrific person. Great personality, great qualifications and great staff. Now I am praying that the insurance just okay's it and I will join the banded.

I am scheduled on Thursday for my consultation with Dr. Spivak in Houston and am wondering what to expect. Not really sure what information I need to bring with me for my first visit. I would love to have everything he needed so that I can just sign on the dotted line, but I know it won't be that easy. Any suggestions on what information I would need to bring, what to expect from a consult and what generally takes place afterward? I would love my insurance to pay, however I haven't seen much information about Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, so I am not sure how willing they will be to assist in this. Hopefully the doctors office will handle all of that side of the business for me. Thanks,

Thanks to everyone for all of the great advice. I am in Southeast Texas and will be going to Houston for my banding. I have an appointment on Thursday, 6/9 for a consultation and am very excited. I have had my psych evaluation as well as my nutritional evaluation and passed with flying colors. They both think that I will be a good canidate for the surgery, so keep my in your prayers. (Never thought I would be praying that God would allow me to have surgery, but I have to admit, it crossed my mind a time or two today while I was at church.) Thanks again! Yes, isn't that sad. I have daydreamed about how to weigh more that day. I even asked my husband about borrowing his bullet proof vest, that thing weighs a ton. There is no chance I would go to Mexico. I am looking at having mine with Dr. Spivak in Houston, Texas. Thanks for the info though.....

I am looking at getting banded pretty soon and have done much, much research on the subject. All of what I have read basically states you must have a BMI of 40, if not 40, then there must be some type of medical necessity. I am a 30 yr old with a BMI of about 36, no medical problems, no depression and I will mostly likely be self-pay. I guess, I am just a healthy, happy fat person. Any chances I will be allowed to have the surgery? Have or did any of you experience this?
