  1. Hey everyone. I just joined. Am very happy to have found this community. My name is Monique and I'm in the beginning stages of the journey that many, if not most of you have been through. I have been considering having weight loss surgery for about 2 yrs and am finally going through with it. We had to switch insurance because what we had before did not cover WLS. Now that we have finally switched at the beginning of the year my doctor has finally sent my referral. I had to take a class before I got referred and had a sleep test done, the sleep test showed I had mild sleep apnea. The bariatric surgery center is in South San Francisco, I live about 30- 45 min away, I was curious to know if any of you had gotten your surgery done there? Or can anybody explain to me how the process goes from here? Or if anybody has Kaiser California Northern? All my doctor said was that the bariatric surgery center would call. But I heard it could be awhile before they do. Could anybody give me insight. Anything would be helpful. thank you so much.
  2. I couldn't find a June Sleevers forum. If there is one already please direct me! Well anyway, I'm glad excited that I finally got a date, June 5th. I really wanted it to be sometime during the end of May but that didn't happen. My family will be going out of town, to Disney to be specific, a few days after my surgery because my cousin from Mexico will be making his fist trip here. I'm so sad I won't be joining them but my parents keep telling me I need to look at the bigger picture, or should I say smaller. Haha. I have my preop appointment May 27th. I'm curious as to what kind of diet he will put me on! I'm just excited to get this going! So who else has a June Date? Who is hoping for a June Date? Are you ready yet? Nervous? Excited?
  3. I am 3 days almost 4 post op. My family just left today to Disneyland. I feel SO depressed. I wish I hadn't made this decision. I feel so lonely. I don't feel well at all & feel so lightheaded & faint. I don't know what to do with myself anymore. My mother had offered to stay behind with me but I know she needed this break. I have to fight my tears when they call. I know I sound so childish but I'm not sure I made the right choice. I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!

    Any 2014 June Sleevers

The ladies above me who has their surgeries a few days ago and had all the nausea, I felt like I was the only one. My Dr has also decided to keep me another day because I was vomiting blood quite a bit yesterday. He said that was normal. & today I am still extremely nauseous. One of you mentioned taking a sip of water & feeling like your going to throw up! I had the same experience. & it was the smallest, tiniest sip. I haven't been able to take my oral medication & my Dr says I need to be able to so that before I can be discharged. I have noticed that I have become extremely sensitive to the smell of most foods. I kicked my mom out of the room when she brought in take out! But anyway, I hope you ladies feel better & all the rest of you June Sleevers. Remember this is just MY experience as of 1 day post op.

    Annoyed...

So I told my cousin I was getting this surgery done & she flat out said how stupid I'm being & how all I need to do is exercise & eat healthier. What I find funny is she is overweight herself & is criticizing me & my choice to become healthier. I've struggled with weight issues since a child & so has she, so for her to tell me that.. Really pisses me off. I told her maybe I should try another diet pill or two & see if that worked then gain the weight back just like her. All she said was "well it works I'm not that big!" I don't want to say she is "Jealous" but it feels like it everytime the topic is brought up. She is one of my closest cousins but has always been very greedy & self absorbed but she is my cousin. I know I don't need her approval or anything it's just very irritating to hear her negativy. I gues she just won't hear anymore about it even though she is the one to ask all the time. Anybody else have someone like this around? Luckily another cousin of mine has had the lap band surgery & is completely supportive & has been successful! So I guess it sort of balances out..
  13. Does anyone know if Insurenutrition.com is covered through Kaiser Northern Health Plan? I've just heard that Kaiser is usually very strict & doesn't cover anything that isn't directly from Kaiser, if that makes any sense.

    Annoyed...

All of you are absolutely correct! It does bother me when she says it's the easy way out. She doesn't realize that I'm changing my relationship with food forever & that is absolutely difficult. Adding exercise into my daily routine is a challenge because it wasn't a part of my life beforehand. Changing my way of thinking and how I see food, exercise and my relationship with other will change. But she won't take the time to acknowledge that because she doesn't want to know and that's okay. Nobody has to agree with my decision to have this surgery done because I have made that choice for myself. She has the right to her opinion, I know, but if it's something negative I really don't need it. Thank you all for your kind words and helping me see that not everyone will agree with my choice to better my life. I REALLY appreciate it.

Congrats to all you ladies. Each day is one step closer to beginning a whole other chapter of our lives. I'm so excited. I don't see my surgeon again until May 27th which is when he will let me know what kind of preop diet I will be placed on.

Yaay! So excited for us. It does feel like it's forever & a day away but I'm sure the time will go by very quickly. Are you ladies nervous yet? Excited? Have you started taking your vitamins? Trying protein drinks, shakes, powders? I've started on vitamins but not protein yet. I need to do that ASAP! I'm excited for JUNE this year! Hopefully I won't have to cover up under so much clothes this summer.
  17. I'm 21, in college and although I'm a couple yrs older I completely understand what you're saying. For the most part my friends are all thin. So when they talk about someone being "big or fat" it tugs a little but I don't expect them to understand. I'm also hoping to get the sleeve soon, hopefully the end of May. I have only told my parents, my niece (she lives with me), & my two closest friends. Although they aren't completely on board, they are supporting me with the decision I'm making. I don't think that you should tell anybody who you don't feel needs to know. This is your choice. Not everyone needs to know your business. When you go back to school after having surgery just tell them you've started eating healthier & exercising like others have mentioned. It's up to you how little or more info you want to give. Then if you want to let them know when you feel comfortable, tell them.
  18. Hey there! Omgosh! Congratulations! That's was so quick. Are you excited? Nervous? How does it feel to be so close? Are you doing a pre op diet? Who is your surgeon? I'm chugging along. I've had to spread my visits since I'm in school or I'd probably be farther along but I saw my surgeon last week & I was suppose to see the psychologist the same day but the canceled my appt. now I don't see him until next week. When I get approved I will be able to finally schedule surgery. But I'm hoping for the end of May because of school anyway.
  19. Hi K! I'm so happy to hear that everything is going so quick. How were the nutrition and lifestyle classes? Did you find them informative? Thats great that you were able to see your surgeon much sooner than you anticipated! How was your experience with your surgeon? Wow that's so great that he isn't asking you to lose anymore weight since that means your surgery date can be so soon. Did he give you an official surgery date yet or are you still waiting to confirm a date? How exciting! And as for me I'm still in th beginning stages. I had orientation on 3/4 and signed up for my medical assessment on 3/14, lifestyle and nutrion classes on 3/17. I had to wait awhile since it's midterm time at school which makes it a bit difficult to miss school and travel to SSF. I hope my plan to get the surgery done this summer works out but we will see how everything goes!
  20. Well I do have sleep apnea just, MILD sleep apnea. I guess that was enough to qualify me. I looked back at my medical records and my BMI is 39.3 so I don't know if that made a difference also. Was that blood work done after the orientation? Wow that is slow but that is a lot of Vitamins you will be taking. I guess that will be preparing you for post surgery when you are required to take many vitamins as well. I hope to get my surgery done this summer if everything goes smoothly as well. It's the only semester I can take off from school. But we will see.
  21. Ahh well that's good to know. I had heard that it wasn't always for sure until you meet with the surgeon. But I see that isn't true. I heard back from the sleep lab today. They said I have mild sleep apnea so I do not require the CPAP Machine. They did say that my sleep apnea could be fixed with weight loss, exercise, etc. So I'm very hopeful that they will not extend the wait because of my sleep apnea but we will see. Your nutrition and lifestyle classes are on Monday. Good luck with them. Let me know how they go!
  22. I got the "long" awaited phone call today from SSF, specifically Terry who you mentioned. She said I had made it into their bariatric program and needed to sign up for an orientation which I did for 3/4/14. I asked if I could sign up for any other classes or do anything else in the meantime but she said I would have to wait to attend orientation for that. I'm really excited but I know that this still doesn't guarantee surgery will happen, at least from what I read. I can't wait to get this all done with. Since this is the easiest part.
  23. Hello K, I can't thank you enough for all the information you have given to me. Now I will know what to expect and I have basic knowledge of the process we must go through when at SSF Bariatric Center. So if I read correctly, when you were called to go to the orientation at the bariatric center you were also able to sign up for other classes and appointments? You did this to keep the process going. Speed it up. Am I correct? I will definitely try to do the same. A bit more of my story, I met with my PCP on 1/20/14, and talked to her about WLS she said I did not have a BMI of 40 but a 38 so I was not qualified. She advised me to still take the WLS Introductory Seminar that is required before a referral. That class was on 1/12/14. She also had me take a sleep test which was done on 1/7/14. The day after the WLS Seminar (1/13/14), I went in to try and get a referral from my PCP. She again said I did not have the right BMI, which I knew but I was hoping. My sleep test had not come back yet so she said if it came back positive she would send out the referral. I have to admit, I left feeling hopeless. On 1/15/14, I received an email from my doctor letting me know my sleep study showed I had MILD SLEEP APNEA. Which is not good at all but, she did send out the referral. I was told someone from both the sleep lab and the Bariatric Center would contact me. But that is as much as I know. That's me. I'm SUPPER thankful for your post. I learned a ton. I hope to keep up with your process. It sounds like you have a great mindset about this journey and I am sure you will do great!
  24. Do I wait for the Bariatric Center (SSF) to call me and let them tell me when I can or should go to a seminar or should I try to sign up for one in SSF Bariatric Center myself?
