How is weight loss for people over 50?
You got that right!! That's a very good point. OMG... watching NBC News (east coast feed) and they are talking about "The Oprah Campaign"!! Gag me! :sick

I watch her occasionally, but I think she's a little annoying! And, I know it's best to stay away from politics here, but I think she's getting a little too involved with a certain candidate! Not that he's MY candidate, but I don't think she's doing him any favors.

Oh, I am VERY grateful that my DH does all the cooking! And the shopping, and the cleanup! I did everything for lots of years! So I'm not complaining!! (well, maybe a little when he over-seasons! LOL) I coach him as he cooks, so as long as he listens, it's all good! Between the two of us we've come up with some pretty good bandster freindly meals! I guess I will have to call Janet's Dr. Bobby & see if I can get him to give me a fill. Isn't it strange to want to have all those horrible things.... PBing, sliming, etc! It's just that I know that they are indications that you have good restriction and since I don't have them, I think I need to be tighter.

HELLO, any oldies out there? I'm almost 63 and want to live.
I've heard of people as old as 75 having it done. Just depends on the doctor and the person's medical condition. I was 63 when I had mine done. Wish I'd done it younger, but glad it is available and doctors willing to do it on us more "mature" folks!!

We used to have one of those. My DH got rid of it! He didn't like it. Makes sense to me. But he does all the cooking (my sweet control freak), so, whatever! Didn't see that Oprah show, but we've discussed "transfer addictions" on one of these threads. I decided I prefer "retail therapy" as my transfer addiction. Hope going on liquids for a few days takes care of your problem. I need to be a little tighter, I think. Because I have never had any problems similar to yours... no PBing, no sliming, etc., then I think I must not be tight enough. I'd like a little more restriction. It's a fine line, isn't it??

Good to hear from you again, Don. Hope that Medicare approval for the hospital comes soon!

Yeah, I like him, too. You're doing great!! When is your post-op appointment? Then you probably have to wait until about the end of Jan. for your first fill. I've had three so far. Now I'm down in CA for the winter, so it's going to be a while before I have another unless I can get a doctor down here to do one. That's a possibility.

James, Did you have Dr. Hunter? I had my surgery at Virginia Mason in July.

I don't recommend this, but here's a funny story related to hunger! Last week DH & I were in Wal-Mart and I was REALLY hungry... legitimately hungry. Once we got inside all I could think about was going to have a chicken snack wrap at McDonald's just inside the door. I knew I'd give in if I didn't distract myself somehow. So I went to the hair salon... yes, the Wal-Mart hair salon, and I got my hair cut... really short... spiked it!! By the time I was done, DH was finished shopping and it was time to leave. I had a couple of pieces of beef Jerky on the way home instead of the snack wrap. So.... don't necessarily go get a hair cut, but find something to distract yourself from the voices in your head!! I like the new hair cut, by the way! The poor girl kept saying, this is going to be really short. I just told her not to worry about it. If I didn't like it, it would grow back!!

Beached guppy! That IS cute!! Thanks for the encouraging words. Ya think when your kids grow up they ought to be able to take care of themselves! Not! Oh well, everything has been frustrating me this week. But I am getting outside and enjoying the wonderful sunshine as much as possible. That helps! You are doing great!! You, too, Kristin!! Welcome!! Don't be so quiet! You two are so young!! I'm an old grandma who wishes this surgery had been available when I was your age!!

Hi, I'm here. Don't know what's going on. Feels like PMS, hormones, etc. and I'm too d_____ old for that. Just crying about nothing. Didn't help that we had a call from a bondsman in OK today... youngest son in jail for driving without a license.. AGAIN! Bail set at $50K!! For driving w/o a license???? She would bond him out if we co-signed for him! He's 35 yrs old!! We're tired of this!

Carol, You're doing great. I find that as the weight comes off, the pain decreases and I'm able to do more. It will be that way for you, too, and hopefully you will begin to be able to do some sort of exercise. Can you do resistance type stuff, like with therabands? Those can be done sitting in a chair. Target sells a set of three bands for $10.

Marcy, I checked the Lands End site and found what I was trying to tell you about. They will actually custom-make your clothes. I'm not sure what the cost is, but they claim they're competitive with off-the-rack clothes. Take a look, just for the heck of it. At the bottom of their site you'll see a list of options and one of them is "customize".

I'm sorry but "skinny" seems almost too much to hope for! It seems like an impossible dream. But then I'm having a down day! I'm way too old for PMS, but that's what it's felt like today. About the jeans, Marcy, I think on the Lands End website there is something that helps you figure out what style, etc. of jeans, pants, whatever, is right for you. Check it out.

HI, We were all over AZ the first year of retirement: Bullhead City, Lake Havasu, a few weeks in Needles CA. But our last stop that trip was here in Desert Hot Springs CA and we fell in love with Sky Valley Resort so we've been coming here every winter since then for 4 months. We love the weather here, except when the wind blows like crazy!! It did that over the weekend. So we went shopping!

A thread for super-sized bandsters - starting BMI over 50?
Hi, Congrats on your date and your 10 lb. loss. I went pretty drastic with my pre-op diet & lost about 18 lb. in approx. 6 wks. I had protein drink for breakfast, salad with a little protein for lunch, veggies & small portion of meat for dinner. For a while I was doing about 500 calories a day but when I saw the dietician for my pre-op diet she was not happy with that & I upped it to about 800-1000 a day. I wasn't getting enough protein. I wouldn't worry about them having to open you up. I doubt that will happen. Can't recall anyone on here saying that had happened. The object of the diet is to shrink your liver because the surgeon has to lift it out of the way during surgery.

green, If you think you might be interested in online Scrabble, I know of a site where you can play with others for $10/year. You take your turn and then send it back. They have Scrabble & Super Scrabble. Super Scrabble can be played with up to 6 people. The board is twice as big & 200 letters instead of 100. If you want to try a game, I think you can play once for free. Then you pay the $10 if you want to continue. PM me with your email address if you want to try a game & I'll start a game with you. I play with my three sisters, mom, friends, daughter-in-law, granddaughter, etc! It's great fun.

It's so good to be back in the desert! It's so nice and warm down here and I LOVE the sunshine. We've been here two days and today we started back to water aerobics. It felt really good, but I'll probably be hurting tomorrow morning! After the first 5 minutes I wondered how or if I'd make it through the whole hour, but I did. We use a 60 minute tape, so there's no slack time... have to keep moving. And that got me to drinking my crystal lite, too!! It was a good workout. :Banane30::car:

ihuber99, It sounds to me like you're an excellent candidate for lapband surgery. Joining the YMCA is a great first step. Talk to your doctor about your fear of anesthesia. I don't know if they'll do the surgery by spinal, but I think if you had an opportunity to talk to the anesthesiologist, you will be put at ease about that. Part of my pre-op visit was about a 30 minute visit with the anesthesiology department. I'm not going to lie to you... you will experience some episodes of hunger during the initial period.... You will most likely be put on a pre-op diet that may be quite restrictive.. Some doctors require a couple of weeks of liquid protein drinks. Mine just told me to lose 10% of my body weight. I didn't quite get all the way there, but he was pleased with the 18-20 lb I did lose. The first few weeks after surgery are probably the hardest because again... liquids for at least a week, "mushies" for at least another week, then soft as you progress back to regular. You will be told by your dietician what kinds of things to keep on hand to help you handle the hunger. Eating small amounts at frequent intervals will get you through it. AND, staying on these lapband discussion boards will also be a big help. You can do it. You'll be so glad you did. I'm a little more than 4 months out and have little problem with hunger at this point. I am eating small meals, three times a day and a small snack at night. You must eat lots of protein, little carbs!
