  1. planning on sticking to veggies that are mostly water; cucumber, romaine, a pear or apple. other veggies/fruit can come later.
  2. here is a super basic article on fat requirements. you should eat 30-60 grams of good fat per day. at least half of which should be "raw." i am aiming for 2tbsp of coconut oil per day during phase one, sinceits liquid at body temp. http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/family-nutrition/facts-about-fats/why-you-need-fats
  3. bumping this up... anyone who has had or is going to have the surgery interested in being an "online buddy." i am scheduled for next friday, the 12th.
  4. what i said was, if you dont get enough of the right kinds of FAT you are creating the conditions of malnutrition in your body and this is what causes hair to fall out. you can ge an abundance of lean or fat free Protein and still be starving. i am only concerned the liquid phase of post op diet. mostly i am just nervous cause i am nervous and need something to focus on. if you are wanting Gelatin in your diet (speeds healing and allows the body to better use protein) make bone broth. look up recipes online. incredibly nurishing and yummy too. Jello..... the nutritional aspects.... not much. i did make jello for my daughter when she had the stomach flu with unflavored knox and raspberry-hibiscus tea. it wasn't nearly as sweet as jello, but she enjoyed it. the stash's raspberry hibiscus tea is so sweet it doesnt need sugar or honey. i am planning on making popsicles with unsweetened herbal green tea. i wont have to share them with my kids! lol
  5. good fat is important too. avocado and coconut oil. milk, meat and eggs from grass fed organic animals. you can eat all the protein you want, if you dont eat any fat, you will be malnurished. that why so many lose their hair.
  6. melissa, too much food is too much food! i have issues with portion control, along with depression and emotional eaing, and hormone imbalances.
  7. rochester ny. are you in med school? i am 47, married with 2 homeschooled kids. and a hyperactive mind that will be going a little nutso after the surgery! lol
  8. have you considered weight training? it doesnt burn calories. but it does build muscle. which could be very beneficial for you.
  9. i think someone i could message with who is having the surgery around the same time would be really helpful.
  10. honey, maple syrup... i still use sugar in my coffee but just bought some coconut crystals... much lower GI than sugar. how do i keep up with what? cooking? we eat almost no processed food, so if i didnt cook we'd all get pretty hungry!
  11. we dont eat any artifical sweeteners or flavorings or dyes in our home. i am concerned that so much stuff on my first post op diet plan are "sugar free" processed products. i have bought hemp Protein powder... its pretty minimally processed. i plan on making and storing homemade bone broth (chicken and beef). we get milk right from the farmer, and i have found a brand of plain greek yogurt i like. i also plan on juicing cucumber, romaine, apples, pears, etc. anything low sugar. i think i will be fine but keep worrying.
  12. i am scheduled for july 12th. i am excited and terrified at the same time.
  13. me too assan! my kids are 10 and 6 and i cant do much of anything with them without getting winded and my heart pounding... i cant wait to ride bikes ith them and play at the beach.
  14. i am required to make certain dietary changes before i can be okayed for surgery. i was doing well, then fell apart. stress, severe pms, really busy schedule ithink all contributed. but these things arent going to disappear postop, if i even get to postop. anyone else really struggling preop? if i could do ths so easy, i wouldnt need to surgery! argh!
  15. are you getting enough good fats and protein? are you being followed by a nutritionist? sounds like a vitamin deficiency to me.
  16. after i lose weight, i am looking forward to being able o garden without getting out of breath so easily, sweating profusely, or being so sore the next day. how about you? what are you really looking forward to?
  17. oh, i forgot to say, if your liver enzymes are elevated from drinking, your doc will need those to be normal before surgery. 6-8 weeks totally sober is about what you would need depending on how high they are. did he/she say anything about your liver profile?
  18. i was told i was not supposed to gain weight while getting ready for surgery. however in the last 5 weeks i was on prednisone twice for unrelated things. which totally makes you hungry and can lead to weight gain. i am required to track all of my food or the nut. to review. i cannot be cleared for surgery until i can show that i know how to plan healthy balanced meals. i can see that some days i do well, and others i eat like total crap with way too many calories. when i went for my appt last week i had gained 2.4#. but the nut. didnt say anything. *shrug*
  19. because wls is considered elective, the docs are obligated to reduce your post op risks as much as possible. heavy drinking, twice a month is risky, just like smoking or eating raw shellfish. make your doc a deal. tell him or her you can stop drinking entirely now. if you arent sucessful, you'll agree to out patient treatment before surgery.

  21. have you done any reading online about the post op eating plan? my hospital has a website for the bariatric surgery center, and the lists on the site are pretty explicit about what you can eat when.
  22. domt know why my doctors last name disappeared. its QUEENAN.
  23. hey pandabear, my doctor, emily, does the medifast program. apparently, you can lose the same pound a day on the progam a the surgery. look her up online and give her a call. she is sweet and very supportive and she is your coach for the program. starla, i dont know what t tell you. as i havent had the surgery yet, but we used this CD with my husband before he had surgery a few years ago. it helped him a lot, as he is a very anxious person. you can download stuff like this cheeper than the CDs btw. http://www.amazon.com/A-Meditation-Promote-Successful-Surgery/dp/1881405346
  24. was it your insurance company or the docs that didnt approve you? what hospital are you with? a friends housemate has been turned down a couple of times at RGH. she has switched to highland and is much happier. not approved yet, but at least she doesnt feel like she is being treated unfairly.
