I think there's a complicated history of hair care and black women. Have you seen the documentary "Good Hair" by Chris Rock? It's a very funny, but accurate portrayal of African-American women and the hair care industry. I began wearing my hair naturally (partially) due to having extreme night-sweats. I'd roll my hair at night, only to have soaking wet hair in the morning. And while I love wearing my hair naturally, there are many African-American who would never consider doing so.
