March 2011 Bandsters
I called yesterday to see if I can add veggies to my diet....and oh goodness to chew!!! I'm doing raw celery, carrots, lettuce, and cucumbers with rice vinegar for snacks. and today instead of a frozen diet meal did a can of tuna, 1 tbsp light mayo, 3 chopped pickle chips, and black pepper...and ate it sandwich style on crisp lettuce. YUMMM (and under 200cal) because of the tuna protein I only did 2 of my 3 shakes today too. for dinner I had 2 servings of black bean soup (160 cal)...it was just heaven to have some flavor. If my weight drops again tomorrow I may keep up with the slightly altered preop diet (clinic said it's ok as long as I stay under 870 cals a day).

Tricare Prime-- Not overweight long enough?
Fran has a really good point...it's a good idea to go ahead and start a supervised weight loss program (in some cases these may just be monthly nutritional counseling, if I'm not mistaken?) In a lot of cases insurance will deny a claim hoping people don't appeal... Maybe it'll help if some of us talk about what our insurance required? For me, they wanted a list of diets I've attempted (but no proof other than my handwritten record) A 5 year history of obesity Even though my BMI is well over 40 they wanted a comorbidity, so i went for a sleep study and was diagnosed with sleep apnea and put on cpap....but even with this they DENIED my claim. The clinic I'm going to has an attorney they use to appeal, and they did and it was approved 2 weeks later.

Tricare Prime-- Not overweight long enough?
I'm not with Tricare, but my insurance required a FIVE year history of being obese. (I've been obese for maybe 20 years and with the same doctor for that long so proof was easy in medical records) Have you had a sleep study to diagnose sleep apnea? that may help. You might want to start that now. a year will fly by, and if you can get on cpap for sleep apnea it likely will help you qualify when it's time. Best of luck! and hang in there!

I need help with Pre -op diet
Jen how's it going today? I started using 6 ox fat free milk and 4 ounces of Water (that's an extra 2 ounces of fluid) for my shakes to decrease the milk a bit, but I also find the shakes too THICK and that's with using flat scoops when they are supposed to be rounded. I called my clinic today to ask if adding a serving of veggies is ok and they said YES (but that's just my doc). so, I have my hubby stopping on his way home to get cucumbers, carrots, and celery and rice vinegar- she also ok'd pickles so I just had about an ounce of chopped pickle. It really helped. I feel like I need something to chew on. Have you tried various sugar free flavors for water (like crystal light, ocean spray?) There's a blueberry lemonade by oocean spray that is AWESOME.

when meeting with the nutritionist
Nope, put what you actually ate. These people work with "us" people and will not judge you * hugs*

HELP! Should I not lose the weight?
Absolutely 100% follow your doctors instructions and not anyone on here. Your preop diet is for a very specific reason and for your health & safety. You will get insurance approval based on pre-procedure weight. They do not weigh you the day of surgery then call up insurance and say "oh by the way." Maintaining your BMI until you get insurance approval woul dbe a good idea, but after that losing is great.

Pre-Op diet and weight loss
I started my preop diet yesterday ... and lost 4 pounds. Is that normal? Certainly I won't keep the trend for the next 6 days, but how much should I expect to lose a day? (my doctor expects 10 pounds in 7 days)

March 2011 Bandsters
Congrats to everyone!! I love hearing how it went for you all. Questions: are you all anticipating a day-surgery and going hoem the same day? Hospital or clinic? Going back to work? I'm being banded in a clinic and should go home the same day (on a Tuesday) and have myself scheduled for a single 12 hour shift that Saturday...then 4 more days off. My wonderful hubby picke dup my post op pain meds & nausea pills today. I also told my parents finally and they seem to be taking it well (I anticipated them, my mom in particular, not being supportive)

APPROVED APPROVED APPROVED
CONGRATS!!!! I just heard back on my appeal with insurance on Feb 28th and got approved, and was as excited as when I found out I was pregnant with my 3 kids! (that's super excited!!) I also have PCOS and so many aches & pains. I'm an old lady though at almost 36. My surg is March 15. I'm so excited, but mostly to be done with this preop diet and get on with a new life...although I feel like today is the start being day one of preop diet ... CONGRATSCONGRATSCONGRATS!!

Super Scared!!!
ABSOLUTELY. don't for a second feel like you're weird for this...talk to your surgeon and explain it, and ask to have some sedation given while you wait. There's things they can give you either to take by mouth before you head in, or once you are there and they start the IV they can give you some medication (I'd recommend this to be honest if not both)...I bet they'll be happy to accomodate!!! I'm a nurse and many of my patients get super anxious about getting epidurals placed during labor. I don't even hesitate to give them a dose of medication IV before hand to make them feel more at ease/calmed. And I have great feelings about your surgery...it's on my birthday!!!

Not meaning to be gross, but...
lovely...lol

Second thoughts... again
I admit I've been feeling really devastated knowing bread, rice, eggs, some meats may not agree with me after surgery...what gets me thru though is knowing it's for my health. I'm way sadder about giving up some of these foods than I am about giving up sweets, ice cream, etc. But it's at a point now where my health and lifespan will suffer if I don't make this commitment.

Has anyone else experienced raunchy smelling stenchy gas with the protein shakes??

Methadone And Lap Band
I take care of moms on methadone (labor & delivery), so c-sections come up. i know they STAY ON THEIR METHADONE. Sometimes they do take additional narcotics (opiates) but we usually have to accomodate with larger doses. I would for sure talk ot your clinic. There may be dose adjustments on methadone while you lose weight too. My nurse psychologist DID tell me to STAY on antidepressants until well after goal weight. Not completely the same situation, but you don't want to mess with getting rid of one med that is helping stabilize you while you go thru the emotional roller coaster of the lap band....so my guess is it'll be wise for you to do this while on methadone as opposed to after weaning? Kuddos to you!! Hang in there, ok?

I need help with Pre -op diet
Just to touch on the liver... Back in 2005 I had laparoscopic surgery to rmeove my gallbladder. The surgeon noted I had fatty liver, and because of the size/condition of my liver it caused some extra bleeding that left me in the hospital a day longer than anticipated. So it really is important. Actually that whole surgery led to me doing the lap band today (surgeon recommended bariatric surgery way back then)

March 2011 Bandsters
Can I hop on board?? I'm Marcy, 36 (well, close to 36), have a husband and three little boys. My surgery is March 15th (yikes in 7 days!!!!). I started my preop diet today; Bariatric Advantage Protein shakes (I chose banana) and one diet frozen meal a day (I love Smart Ones so bought 7 of them, all under 300 cals). 64 ounces of Water a day. If I make the shakes with nonfat milk it'll put me over my 870 cal/day restriction but I tried one with water and it was like slug slime...so I may just go with milk anyway. at least for some of the shakes. and I can have any other calorie free drinks. Surgeon wants me to lose 10 pounds in 7 days.

I need help with Pre -op diet
Hey Jen! We have the same surgery date!! I had my hsake at 8am, and never did feel full. it's 9am now and well, I'm ravenous. Keep drinking Water...and my plan to help keep my mouth busy is to drink plain tea with splenda in abundance. Will gum help you at all? Just remmeber it's only a week, and I'd love to help support you! I meant to start this yesterday then realized I didn't have to start till today so after a panick attack I ate last night... my BMI is 52, btw. The doc wants me down 10 pounds over 7 days (is that even possible???)

What is/was your pre-op diet?
...the milk is going to take me over diet about 100 calories, so I may try to adjust and split one shake into 2 servings or just go with it, or make 1 shake with water, or maybe half water half milk.
