I don't know about disability because I always get that through work. But you will have trouble getting a private life insurance policy for about 5 years out from your surgery. Group life through work shouldn't be a problem in most cases though.

Hmmm...I actually got life insurance after my lap band. I think the weight loss, lowered blood pressure and reduced risk of diabetes made it easier to get life insurance.

I have heard from people here that have said there numbers are well below and able to get insurance at a better rate. Just make sure to keep your insurance in place until you have the new coverage in place.
