Dumping

Anyone dump? What does it feel like? Have people been able to have some sweets without dumping. Just want to see if I can ever have a cookie or something like that again.

why look for advice/tips on cookie eating! Surgery is a tool not a solution

This is why I stopped attending my surgeon's support group. All they talked about is how to eat what they weren't supposed to. Not the kind of support I needed.

It was Kroger brand. I hope they cook it properly but you never know. I ran to Safeway in between BM sessions and picked up turkey and vegetarian chili by Valley. Hoping this could be a simple fix ??????

Update: Nurse line told me to come in for labs and a BM sample. They suspect bacterial infection or some type of organ dysfunction....yikes.

I’m so weak today. I had 4.5 hours of Zoom meetings with teachers and admin and I know I looked half dead. Only the teacher I work for knows about my surgery too. Double edge sword as I have my privacy but others are left making assumptions ?.

after the doctors office I picked up zero sugar Gatorade, pedialyte, more Imodium, adults diapers, and some bum soothing wipes. The cashier gave me such a pitiful look and told me to feel better. It was a nice sentiment.

Tomorrow is a fresh day and I have what I need to tackle it.
Thank you for everyone that reached out and gave advice ?.

Hi Latanya,

What was your surgery type and when did you have it?

Every 3 days? Are you going more or less? Today alone I’ve gone 3 times and they’ve been crampy and uncomfortable.

I had the sleeve but I had it revised to the gastric bypass. I have gone 10 days once without having a bm. I don't have cramps I feel nothing like I don't have to go.

I hope it gets better too. It’s after midnight and I’ve had 5 incidents today. Something is wrong. Either meds or maybe my shakes or something. Purées is supposed to be easy and allow the body to heal.

it is a little like the flu. I get sweaty on my forehead, I can hear and feel stomach gurgles, sometimes gas but not always and then full body chills. The entire experience is like a roller coaster for my senses. It leaves me drained and weak.
I took at anti diarrheal finally and messaged my team. I can’t do this much longer. Day 9 or 10 straight. ??????

I'm glad you got in touch with your team. They'll figure out what's going. Keep us posted.

I recently learned that dumping syndrome is more than nausea, vomit and bowel movements.

It is also increased heart rate, lethargic, dizziness, just feeling the blues, head aches etc. So there are many symtomps to dumping.

You cannot compare yourself to anyone else. Your surgery and your body is unique to you. What if I told you that yes you can eat all the Cookies in the world because I PERSONALLY don't dump, so you do that and it turns out that you dump. You will feel miserable. You need to learn all over again how YOUR body works. One day you might reacy to sugar, another day the sugar is fine but the fat is not, etc.

Thank you!

Hello. I am new here. 17 years post-op RNY.

I dump. There are two types of dumping, 'early stage' and 'late stage':

Early Stage I don't remember the effects because I don't do this much. For me, it only involves brow sweating, usually soon enough to cue me to stop eating. For me, not a big deal. Sorry, my memory isn't what it used to be.

Late Stage (for me) takes about an hour to start. I get lethargic, light headed, sleepy, and whole body flop sweaty. Then intestinal distress, then diarrhea. Recently, one of my meds also caused me to pass out and made every effect worse. All in all an exciting time I could and strive to live without.

After all this time I generally know my body's limits and go months and years between episodes. When it get's me is when I feel under the weather or haven't eaten well for days and I don't notice and adjust.

Hope this helps,

Tek

Yes. This helps a lot thank you!

Good Morning,

Dumping can come from many different angles but the body feelings you experience (speaking for myself because everyone is different)- I get the shakes, then I sweat and then I am on the toilet for more than 2 times in less than an hour just letting it out. I get mad at myself for .5 seconds because I should have known better and then I make a cup of green tea with some mint leaves and it helps me alot.

I hope that my description helps you assess what dumping feels like.

Missy

Very helpful. Thanks!

Just to be clear, I don't think even regular cookies, cake, or even candy are necessarily evil. Eating such one once in a while is not the end of the world. I've eaten such things over the years. I don't really remember, but I'd bet I ate such things at least once in the first 6 months. When I do, even these years later, I am exceptionally cautious because I know I'm playing with fire.

My comment about my support group used someone else's post that responded perhaps a bit critically to you. My surgeon's plan, amazingly, did not include cookies, sweets, and such. However, the support group was all about eating off plan and how to not dump. This is support I didn't need nor want.

However, imagine you've had surgery. You're in pain for a few days. You get through the first 3 months and now you are finally able to eat generally with success. You are losing weight.

Now that you are doing so well, you decide to treat yourself to cookies, or candy, or whatever. Let's say cookies. You eat one. Two. Three. You now wait, wondering if you may have gone too far. Will you dump? After all, in your research you learned that only about 50% of post-ops actually dump.

Then you dump furiously and horribly. Sweats, lethargy, sickness, etc. Was it worth it? I hope not, but what if it is? Worth it or not, what have you learned? How will it impact future choices?

Worse, you didn't dump. Didn't even feel anything negative. THIS is the scarier scenario, and it scares the crap out of most post-ops. What did you learn? That you can eat cookies with impunity. That is a dangerous lesson. How will it impact future choices?

Good luck.

Thanks for clarifying. You make good points.

Hi

I've experienced bad dumping too. Never in a month of sundays did i imagine it to be as bad as it is! Trouble is, you'd think I'd have learned my lesson but one day eating say brown bread I'm ok, the next I'm in agony. There's no stead fast rules or patterns on my journey. To cap it all I've had no input from my dc or specialist nurse to help me along because of COVID.

I had my operation in March 20 and only now do i get a telephone appointment for october.....how can you be assessed or even checked over through a call. Aww well, I'm soldiering along and I've quite a few questions i would like answering.

Wow! From what I'm reading from other posts dumping is a nightmare. I'm struggling with food getting caught in my throat. Do you regret getting the surgery? Right now I do. How much weight have you lost?
