Working Out and Training for 5/10ks Post DS

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I am a month into my 3 month diet pre-DS.... currently 6’1” 391. Hoping to drop down to 190 and be very active.... something I currently just can’t be due to my size and lack of energy currently...

im wondering if anyone has had any issues or successes training for 5ks and such after or getting into cycling once you’ve shed some pounds. I really want to get into running and such but worry about not having ENOUGH calories to do some hard training for something like that...

thoughs?

After I got through the major portion of my weight loss, I had to work with my nutritionist to figure out ways to eat more calories and make the weight loss stop. At 6'2, I wasn't comfortable in the low 170s but kept losing weight because of the amount of physical activity I was doing combined with the ~1200 calories I was eating. That was a bit mind boggling mentally... but we figured it out and I don't feel limited in anything that I want to do physically, I just have to eat more often and add in health fats (avocado, nut butters, etc) when I exercise a lot. I'm confident that you'll be able to figure it out too!

My wife runs a ton of 5k’s every year, and has always wanted me to do them with her. With that in mind I am in the same place as you in starting to figure out where to start. I think your best bet is doing exactly what axlr8n and working with your nutritionist to come up with a plan. I plan on doing the same and will be start training in the spring when the temps warm back up. I go to the gym all the time, but just can’t run on a treadmill. There is just a slightly unnatural feel to the motion on a treadmill that throws me off.

What procedure did you have? I am going the RNY route and I think your problem would be one that I would be happy to have. Right now, I can only dream of being active. Well, in the not too distant future this will happen. I'm scheduled for surgery on the 8th of February.

I also had the RNY. It took a while, but everything is balanced out and working well now. Good luck with your surgery!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
