Hi everyone, I am 51 and struggling a little bit. I started at 270# on surgery date and am down to 220# today. My surgery was on 2/16/15 and I had RNY. I've had no complications and exercise 2-3 times a week. I get my Protein and Water in every day but my weight loss has been slow all along but extremely slow the last month - I've lost 6 lbs since May 20th. THATS IT! I am getting about 1000-1100 calories a day. Is the 4 month mark a common time for a serious plateau? how long does it typically last? I want to loose another 60-70 pounds but I am worried that I wont. Thanks for all your advice, reassurance and help!

My weight loss phase lasted around 7 months and then I leveled off and went into a maintenance phase. I am over 2 years post-op RNY and my weight is stable and very close to my bottom weight. Around half way through my weight loss phase, I plateaued. I looked at my calorie intake including my Protein shakes and thought I could cut back a little. That was because I was gaining more Protein from my meals since my meal volume increased. So I went from 3 Protein Shakes a day down to 2. I began to lose weight again. It was midway in my weight loss journey. As time went on I dropped down to 1 Protein shake a day and then none. The protein requirement is the amount of protein derived from meals combined with the amount of protein from supplements (protein shakes and protein bars). If you concentrate on eating high protein meals, it diminishes your need to consume calories and extra protein supplements.< /p>

Thanks, James. I am already down to 1 shake a day - I will drink 2, if my Protein intake for the day is not where it should be. When you hit your plateau mid way through, how long did it last? Thanks!

I had the same problem at 4 months. That was about the point when my weight loss slowed way down. It is a very good month if I lose 10lbs.

I am currently on week 3 of no loss what so ever and I have 34lbs to go so I am really hoping I am not done.

When I hit that plateau at 4 months I was stuck for about a month but at that time I was consuming about 700 calories and exercising an hour a day. I was told to eat more and exercise a little less. I did that and it broke my stall. I was told that your body gets used to routine and you may need to simply change things up a little.

Based on everything I have read this is normal and now it is up to us to fight for every pound loss. I too get my Protein, fluids and am right around 1000 calories to 1050 per day.

Unfortunately I am unable to exercise right now due to a recent spine surgery and it is likely they won't release me from that for another 6 to 8 weeks nor could I handle it right now. I am lucky if I can walk 1.5 to 2 miles in a day when I was doing an hour of cardio prior to surgery. I am hoping as soon as I can to increase my exercise and that may kick things up again.

I would try changing your routine up a little a see if that gets things moving.

Generally when I plateau midway through, it lasted about a week or two.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
