Exercise after WLS....

Recommended Posts

So I know that exercise is important after WLS, but I would like to hear from others about their experiences with exercise/weights. I am 6 weeks post op and I was cleared by my Dr. 10 days ago, but jeez, my energy level is like zero. I think I could sleep 12 hours a day if someone would let me. I need to get to the gym, and I'm starting to believe that I'm just going to have to push through this fog of extreme fatigue, and do it regardless. I walk/elipticle about 3 days a week, but I am aware that I need to do more. Would love to hear from pro's and newbies alike on this... What's your routine, how did it affect your weight loss, did it help your skin tighten... Looking for some inspiration from real folks to help get me going :-)

For 6 weeks out, doing the walking is doing a lot. You are doing great. Your energy will return.

To was feeling the same way at that time. I found I had to simply push through that fog and get going.

I started working out using the elliptical and treadmill for 20 minutes a day. I found within a couple of weeks that I could do more and began increasing my workout time. I ended up at an hour a day and then got into a three week stall. I was told I needed to eat more and back down my exercise to 30 minutes every other day until the stall broke.

Now I exercise every other day for a total of 40 minutes. I do a fat burn on the elliptical and add muscle endurance to that workout as mine has that feature. I also use the treadmill and do a cardio workout for about 20 minutes. By the way I excercise in the am when I have the most energy. I drink a premier Protein shake which has 30 grams of Protein every morning. I work out shortly after I drink my shake. After my workout I have a yogurt with high protein granola. It is replenishing after a workout.

I have been very consistently successful with this routine.

I also noticed when I first started it was very hard for me to walk up my stairs leading into the lower level where my equipment is. Now, I can literally run up my stairs and I feel fantastic!

So I must be honest and admit that I get very little exercise. Not making excuses but I have a 40 mile one way commute in downtown Atlanta traffic 2wice a day - I get up at 5am and don't get home until 7PM. then I have to tend to my 3 year old, my 16 and 17 year olds. Make dinner - do laundry...I finally fall into bed by 10 if I am LUCKY! I am 6 months out and have lost almost 60lbs - so I am not really disappointed with my results so far. I finally found a Protein Drink I can tolerate so am now getting in the necessary amount each day unlike before.

I still don't get in the Water I am supposed to - just don't remember to drink! But all in all I have to say I feel great about my results. Being tired has become the norm though. I am ok first thing in the morning but by 2 or 3 I am headed down hill. And it seems the minute I get in my car in the evenings to drive home that every ounce of energy I had just disappears in an instant!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
