  1. Went for a physical on the 6th. Just a routine physical. Doc "mentions" lapband. I have been mulling, and researching, and thinking and meditating like a fool since then. Doc orders cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid, et. tests, and I have had high bloodpressure too so a 5 day blood pressure test. Ok, so my husband and i come to the conclusion that i would LOVE to get the band. (its not like i haven't thought of WLS for the last 5 years) and its like ok what next. Well I have a "follow up" on Monday to discuss all the results. We plan on telling the doc we want to go foward with Lapband. (were military and our MTF does the procedure) I am ***** barely***** exactly 100 pounds over my weight according to metlife. Its been the hardest week of my life this last week, to NOT be on a diet!!!!! I am just like a fish out of water!!!!!! I've been on a diet every day of my life for the last 12 years!!!!!! So, Im NOT trying to gain, just not trying to lose................and its so hard im a mess!!!!! AND GUESS WHAT??????????????? IM DOWN 5 POUNDS!!!!!! wha??????? lol. I want to be so excited but i just don't understand!!!!!!!! Its the 5 pounds that could make me INELIGEBLE for this surgery!!! How does this even happen??????? ARGH im sorry i just needed to vent i guess. Im so confused!!!!!!!

Can someone explain this to me????

thank you kind people! Does anyone know what criteria they use to determine if you are "100 lbs" overweight? I have seen that "metlife" chart, but there is a small frame, medium frame, and large frame. Then with in EACH frame, there is a low and high......................

Does Tricare Prime Cover Lap Band?

    thank you!!!!
  5. soooconfused

Can someone explain this to me????

thanks for the reply. As far as I have been able to find, tricare requires 100 pounds over weight, not BMI.............but someone on here somewhere did say tricare now uses BMI, so im not sure.

    Please help!!!!!

thanks kellyjoii ~ I think part of my confusion was I am just now "getting" that a MTF can do the surgery, and its not under tricare, but that specific MTF............THEN also tricare covers the procedure.......which can occur at a different hospital. That makes a diff i suppose.
  7. I am sitting here about to freak out, and just need some help please! Last week i had a physical, and my doc "mentioned" lap band procedure. I go to William Beaumont @ Fort Bliss (my hubby is active duty army) and he looked at my weight, and height and mentioned that WB now does the lapbands. I have been "thinking" about WLS for about 6 years now, and when he said that, I decided that it is now time, im not getting any younger Anyway, i have RESEARCHED and researched tricare primes policys, and all i can find is that they require you to be 100 lbs over weight (no BMI requirements) AND have a co-morbid. Well I do have high blood pressure, and Im going to find out if i have high cholesterol and blood sugar issues. (in other words im pretty sure i qualify with the co-morbids) HOWEVER...........according to the metlife chart i see, they have a range for my height of 5'6 as 140 - 159. I currently weigh 248..............so Im "with in" that range. But i saw a conversation on here somewhere (wish i could find it now!!!!! ) where someone said that they require you to be on the HIGHER limit of your range. If that is the case, I would be 11 pounds shy of qualifying. Does anyone have experience of getting lapband, under tricare prime AT A MTF???? Meaning not referred out, but at the actual army hospital? Now that Im very excited about getting qualified, I just want to cry that I could actually be denied because im right in the middle of my "height range"????????????? I dont' see the doc for another week, and i just don't feel like im going to make it..............lol............please someone HELP!!!!!!

    Caught in a catch 22

MLBL............if you don't mind, may I ask what MTF you are using? Im trying really hard to find out what I can about William Beaumont, and so far havent' found anything. Im wondering how long the "average" waiting time is?
  11. soooconfused

    Please help!!!!!

hmmm guess I'll have to wait to ask my doc. I go to the hospital on post, and never have to deal with tricare ~ I've only ever had to deal one time with being referred off post, and even then I never had to deal with tricare. So im really curious how it works if you get banded AT the MTF as a tricare prime benificiary. Thanks for your replies

    Please help!!!!!

thanks for the reply. May I ask if you are getting it done at a MTF? Or are you getting a refferel for civilian doc?
  13. I would be very interested to know of anyones experience with lap band surgery at William Beaumont AMC?
  14. above is quote from OP I never tried to say one is better than the other, but that its NOT true that if you have a GB you can't eat sugar. I would think that if I were to have GB though, I would WANT to not be able to eat sugar. And many can't, but many can.

Does Tricare Prime Cover Lap Band?

Im so glad I found this thread  I am wondering if anyone has experience specifically with William Beaumont MTF (fort bliss)???? At my last appt, my doc "mentioned" lap band, and I also found out i've had high blood pressure for a while now, and am getting my cholesterol, and thyroid checked and checking my blood sugar level. I think my BMI was 39...............so im fairly sure i qualify. I have a follow up next week, and before I get too excited, I want to know if I have months and months wait, or if it is a fairly expedient process to go through? The doc told me Fort Bliss now does Lap Band and has 2 surgeons...
  16. Hi everyone. I am considering getting the band, and I have a few questions if anyone wouldn't mind answering for me. Im a little confused (or sooo confused lol) 1. Can you really not drink Water WHILE your eating? I dont' know why, but that really concerns me. I love drinking water, and drink a LOT, and I get thirsty just imagining not being able to drink at all during a meal. 1. What does PB, sliderfood, and sweetspot mean exactly? 3. How do you deal with telling people in your daily life? That part kinda scares me. My husband said it woudn't be anyones business, but when I "imagine" scenarios in my head of me having lost some weight and people saying 'oh wow, you look good, what are you doing?" of feeling like im lying if I dont' say "i got a lap band".......... But I intend on eating clean and exercising, and I know it will be hard work too, but I dont' know im just confused............ Thanks everyone. (and sorry if i posted this in the wrong place?)

    A few questions.......please help?

can anyone tell me what PB stands for? thank you so much for your replies........ I think I will be the same as far as not something I just would volunteer, but if someone asks, I would tell them. I just think its interesting b/c i feel almost "obligated" to tell people im even thinking about it, yet I dont' feel that same "obligation" to tell someone I had a doc appt, or that i am going to the grocery store, etc..........
  18. I registered to the site just so I could post on this thread. I just wanted to point out that my best friend had a gastric bypass 6 years ago. One of the first things she ate post-op was a slurpee. (full of sugar) To this day, she has no issues eating sugar or candy. She only got dumping at the VERY beginning. Also, she is always getting food "stuck" and trying to either get it to come back up or go down. One of the very reasons I am not a big proponent of gastric bypass is having watched her and others who have gone through one. She doesn't eat right, and im worried for her in the long term as far as nutrients and vitamins are concerned. She lost a lot of weight, yes, and she's very happy and consideres it the best decision she's ever made. Im happy for her, but I just wanted to point out that she can eat sugar and gets things stuck..................
