My weight has yo-yoed (up 20, down 10, up 40, down 20, up 30...) for over 20 years between 230lbs and 175lbs, but I've spent most of my life with a BMI around 33.  I tried every diet in the book as well as prescription diet drugs.  Though I never got down to a "normal" weight, I did get down to 175-ish a couple of times.  I just could never keep it off. I felt like giving up because it was getting harder and harder to lose.  Unfortunately health problems started to creep up on me as I got closer to 40 (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint pain, etc.).  I didn't want to have a heart attack at 54 like my dad so decided to try lapband -- not just to lose it, but to keep it off.  I've gone from 215lbs on day of surgery in mid-October 2009 to 190 today (mid-February 2009).  But like I said -- long term results are what drew me to this procedure so I guess my opinion of it is still a ways off!
