  1. I have always been about 30 lbs overweight. I have gone on numerous diets and have been able to lose 20 lbs back and forth for years. Last year I became pregnant with twins and gained over 80 lbs. My girls are now 4 months old and while I've been successful at getting some of the weight off I have about 50 lbs I still need to lose. I tried to do this through exercise and diet (even hiring a trainer for 3 days a week) since December and I have hit a plateau. I'm very tired of constantly having to manage my weight and yo yoing back and forth. After alot of research I am seriously considering the VSG procedure. I consulted with a local surgeon and also Dr. Aceves in Mexico. Since I am self pay obviously both are willing to do it however the local surgeon asked me to consider if I was willing to undergo a rough surgery to lose a measly 50 lbs which isn't even guaranteed. I really wanted to reach out to this forum for some answers and informed opinions. Some of the questions I have include: Has anyone had a relatively low BMI (30-31) with only 50 lbs to lose and been successful? How fast did you lose the weight? Were all of the side effects after the surgery worth it? Is there anyone who has had it for a while and regrets it? Is it possible that with a starting low BMI you can not lose enough weight because the VSG causes you to eat too little? Any input from you would be greatly appreciated.
  2. Can someone please let me know what the maximum recommended daily amount of carb intake is after VSG surgery?
  3. For those that have been sleeved by Aceves can you tell me when you were weighed? Or if you were weighed at all? Do they do it the day of preop testing or the day of surgery?

    50 lbs to Lose

Hello, I gave birth to twins on October 2nd and had gained almost 90 lbs during my pregnancy. While I have lost almost 40 lbs I still have 50 to go and am getting very anxious to get to a decent weight. I'm working with a trainer for exercise who is very much against getting the LAP-BAND® because essentially she believes my problem with my weight stalling is not eating enough rather than not eating alot. My question are these: How successful have people been with the LAP-BAND® and losing about 50 lbs? Has anyone had their weight loss stalled because of not eating enough? How fast can someone expect to lose 50lbs? Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.
  5. Hello,

I came across a response you put into the low bmi forum. I'm considering VSG with a low bmi of 31. I was just wondering what your experience has been like? Where did you have the procedure? Did you have any complications being such a low bmi? How fast did the weight come off? Do you have a hard time with not being able to eat?

Any insight you could provide would be SOOO appreciated.

VSG for Lower BMI - HELP!

Thank you so much for your candid answers. I keep going back and forth with my decision....On the one hand this is an irreversible permanent change to my body on the other if I lose the weight now without doing something more permanent I'm convinced I will only gain the weight once again. I wish there was more research on low bmi patients and their success with this....It would be my luck that I go through all this and my body rebels and holds on to the weight.

  8. Hi Ruth,

I came across your post from a couple years back where you were considering the lap band even though you only had 40-50 lbs to lose. I am in the same situation and also considering booking for the lap band. Can you tell me what your experience has been? Have you been successful at getting the weight off and also keeping it off? Do you have any regrets?

I really appreciate any insight you can provide.
